    Thank you Morten for this video. I beg to differ about hp, the hardware is very dependable with sturdy quality components. Their pitfall is that they want you to buy everything hp. With so many riser PCIe cards the fans tend to blow slightly louder. For OS SSD, I found all brands work even market ones, but the high volume hard drives have to be hp otherwise the server cries. If you add any non-hp PCIe cards it also cries. You get the idea.

      Hi Mamdouh Tawadros
      Thank You very much! way to mush errors on HPE,, bought 10 blade centers c7000 1½ years ago,,, some 210% error rate on them,, all needed an Intel CPU microcode patch,, all needed replacement of bootable dual SD card USB boot thing,, and 10% other error,, and we have had 5 blades that needed new system board. I have worked 10years with IBM/Lenovo,, changed the first Lenovo system board 2 month ago.
      HPE is great for keeping your job,, they keep us busy.
      Thank you for watching! :-)

      Funnily enough, that fan issue can be fixed on G6-7 servers by *downgrading* the BIOS. I did it on my 380 G7 and it calmed down to ~35dB. The fans raised up even though I used a HP ConnectX-2. The fan speed issue is even worse on a DL180 G6. Adding a P410 in any of the full height slots shoots the fans up to 8000 RPM. Almost unbearable in a homelab environment.

    • @mamdouh-Tawadros
      @mamdouh-Tawadros 7 років тому +1

      The CPU patch is not HPE issue but an Intel issue. You will find all recent xeon cpu having the same problem across the board, whether Lenovo, or hp or dell.

    15:20 Can that riser really take NVMe SSDs? Tested it? If it can, then what's the model number of the riser, and where available? The default riser ( 877946-001, 809461-001), I've read only takes M.2 SATA drives. No manual seems available for that riser, which strikes me as quite odd; i.e. if you make it, why not document it?

    I've had nothing but good results with HP, we have a few hundred machines deployed in various places. They can be really picky to set up at first, but once they're running they run for near forever in my experience. Dell's are also just as good IMO. Haven't been able to play with the newer Lenovo stuff yet though.

      I've used HP for years as well and have never had problems running them at 100% 24x7. The new Gen10s have been great and extremely highly performant in production. The DL560 can be loaded up with 4x Xeon Platinum 8180s without skipping a beat running at constant 100% turbo boosted.

      I have had some poor experiences with HPE services,, where 10 days to fix a broken down dl380,, has been more the role then the exception :-/ and we have had batches of 30 servers with 100% fail rades because of bad firmware, netcards, SSD's, SD-card readers(the boot thing) on top of normal amount of what you could expected fails. And 3 month wait on new firmware to be able to use our new servers.

    Thanks for this video Morten. I would like to see the SAN configuration of this data center and the storage boxes you were talking from.
    And why the heck does this "backup" server need 12 SFP's? What is the specific use case for this system? If it's only doing backups, 2 x 10GB's would be enough.

      I would imagine it will be connected to multiple SAN storages. Probably clustering configuration with live migration possibly. With VMware DRS it would be able to assign resources and redistribute VMmachines around the cluster. But still it is quiet massive SAN configuration in my opinion.

I used to work at a place that was all HP, hated IBM...had a friend working in the opposite environment, all IBM, hated HP. Hi My PlayHouse, This is excellent content especially. I'm new to VMware. Is VMware preferred or has a better performance in regard to selecting a processor for it? Do I go with the high voltage or low voltage? Also, VMware has better compatibility with the low-level algorithm and the way the processor works. Sorry I have a lot of questions I was planning to allocate a lot of time studying VMware so why am I digging it from the bottom. To make sure I do not miss any details with it. If yes what processor specification is the best with VMware performance?

    Hi, I have the change to buy a Dell Poweredge T630 with this configuration:
    64GB DDR4 ECC 2400MHz RAM
    6x 300GB 15k SAS, 4x 480GB SSD
    Intel Xeon E5 2640 v4
    2x 750W power supply
    What would you guys say is a fair price for this server?
    Greetings from Switzerland

      That's hard to get a used server which wasn't used 24/7 because that's what 99% of all servers do. Servers are made for 24/7...
      Also your configuration is very rare, because an E5 2640v4 is made for multi CPU Servers so most of the servers with this CPU i think are with 2x E5 2640v4 so it could be difficult to find this configuration... also wouldnt reccomend 6x300GB SAS 15k, what are you need this for?
      But, i think 3000€ would be a good price for that configuration.
      Sorry but my english is not the best xD

      First which coming to my mind is the ILO. With the standard license you would have an option to do basic server configuration and Remote Console would be time limited. With the Advanced license you have much more flexibility. I would put 5 disk in RAID 5 and if you think about VMware, set the ESXi OS on the USB or SD card.

    • @maxb90
      @maxb90 4 роки тому

      @@HUEFESFS thanks a lot, for ILO system is necessary a Ethernet connection?

    • @HUEFESFS
      @HUEFESFS 4 роки тому +1

      @@maxb90 actually you would have multiple options but still main connection is over Ethernet. You could use dedicated Ethernet port for the ILO at the back of the server, you have USB ILO port at the front but you would need the converter from USB to Ethernet to connect to the ILO and you could configure your standard Network Ethernet port to share the data traffic and iLO traffic through the same port but I would not recommend that.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      No that tells you that they have very good sells department. I have worked with 100´s of IBM servers and now 100´s of HPE servers,, and it it the HPE servers that are keeping us busy,, there have way more,, at least 3x more unplanned downtime. And here it is totally normal that HPE 3th party techniques comes to visit you three times to get a standdart server like the DL380 G10 fixed. First visit he will have a network card, raid controller, ram block, with him. Witch will not fix the issue. (and this is after I have firmware updated this server, because HPE always wants this,, even though the server is right next to 139 100% identical Servers) Next visit he will have a system board, and a CPU with him. He will then quite surprised to discover that the system board that HPE has send is flawed, and they never experience that..... But on the 3th visit he will come with a working system board,, and after normally 10 days, I will have the Server back up. :-/
