they finally picked a man who can play Henry VIII, good looking, red headed (not in real life but carries it well) and can play the part of a cruel and selfish person very well. if you watched Forsyte saga you know he is perfect.
Chana FB I have read a lot about Henry. I think he carries the character best of all. Free from dramatisation. Just as Henry as he truly was. Indeed Wolf Hall is realistic. Not the melodrama of, for example, a man for all seasons.
I think he regretted 3: His loyal Cardinal Wolsey, who worked so hard to run things smoothly(Henry had no idea how much Wolsey did until he was gone) and was no more corrupt than any other powerful man in the kingdom and was far less corrupt than some; his true friend Sir Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell. All three served him faithfully and he knew it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this drama, I loved the pace and the language. Damian Lewis to me is as how I imagine Henry VIII to have been. I know drama is based on the novel, but my complaint was that it made Cromwell somewhat of a hero. The reality is when one reads of his leading role in the monstrous injustice of the dissolution of the monasteries, how he fabricated and spun evidence to condemn many innocent men, such as Richard Whiting, who had done great service in their lives, the reality is that this man was a monster.
@@si4632 I grew up Catholic, and now I'm about as anti-Catholic (the religion, not the believers) as they come. So basically, Cromwell *was* a monster, as the original poster stated (which the series does not show him honestly as, really), but the Catholic Church really didn't get slandered in this production--they were portrayed pretty accurately.
Claire Foy was the perfect choice to play Anne Boleyn (other than Natalie Dormer of course, she is... something entirely different) and I think she nailed it. Wish there was a second series.
This is one of the greatest tv performances ever. The dead-pan, even when his entire family was dead, even when HE was dead - this is something you can learn from.
You belittle Rylance’s performance by calling it deadpan. It’s more subtle and cleverer than that. He is a truly great actor. Don’t try to bring him down to your level please.
Damian Lewis is an absolute legend - I only watched Billions, Homeland and Band of Brothers because of him. All good shows, obviously, but he brings the magic 💜.
It seems to me like a gesture against evil, like someone might use against a vampire, yet using a cross symbol can also be interpreted as a religious symbol. It's almost like invoking God's protection against Henry's wrath, but it's wonderfully ambiguous. Even Henry seems nonplussed by it.
Now go and watch Simon Schama's 15-hrs "A History of Britain" (2000 - 2002 ), DVD Box-Set (and more detailed book-series), to get the details on the Tudor, Plantagenets and The Anjevin Empire that led up to all this from the earliest times of 3000 BC. The Long history of Feuding Kings, and Emperors, largely foreign, who fought over our Islands.
Damian just one of the best actors the part of Henry was made for him he must get a BAFTA !!! He is amazing as Henry as well as the tyrant side of Henry Damian brought out the lighter side of Henry and his humour it gave a whole different view of him . Damian’s natural humour cane through also his amazing ability to use facial expressions and his eyes to say more than words !!! He sizzled on screen . I loved the how Henry was in the scene where Jane Seymour asks that the Mary Mary come back to court !
I think Henry liked flattery though. Cromwell was not just an ordinary servant, but Henry probably did not need telling this. I believe it's included for dramatic effect.
Apart from some colour blind casting "yet again by a BBC production" of casting black faces during English Tudor times which is inaccurate and ridiculous during this period of English History.
Cromwell comes from nothing and gains power and as we all know can indulge in the glory of power owever long it lasts but we know the fall from grace and paying the ultimate price is written. Pray for those indulging in their journey for ultimate status/power but as history has taught us, is written in the blood of those who have paid the ultimate price, you will fall and pay the ultimate price. Who will be there for you? You will know your true friends when fallen from grace...
Mark Rylance is not good-looking and he never shows much emotion, so what is it that makes him so fascinating ? Why do we find ourselves watching for some flicker of emotion that will tell us what he's thinking ? It's a strange kind of charisma he possesses.
Curious. I see a face seething with emotion. That I can't put a name to it informs me that I'm in the presence of an actor who understands ,on a level that's allis own, how powerful understatement is.
To each her own, I guess ---I think Mark Rylance as Cromwell is absolutely gorgeous. Rylance with mustache off screen not the same aura, but Cromwell, his intense brow, his powerful stare, his face of strength yet sensuous. Statuesque, his long garb. I cannot breathe!! Young Henry, not my cup of tea, lol.
I see a lot of emotion. What I love about Cromwell is that he is always in control. He is a self-made man of supreme skill and clearly intense passions--his love for his wife, the Cardinal, and the idea of the English monarchy are major themes throughout the story. You can also detect his regret at Moore's fate--which is a novel take on the character. Cromwell is usually presented as a villain.
What you see is the character's intelligence, the expression of the inner life of Cromwell's mind and the flickers of his soul. Which, of course, requires an actor of soul and intelligence to portray. That's what Rylance does so well. The source of his power as a performer is that he works in quiet, reflective moments to show you what the character is thinking. It's all in the eyes, the subtle micro-expressions of his face and the small changes in voice tone. Most actors paint their emotions in simple, easy to read colours. Rylance is able to convey a wide variety of emotions at the same time by hardly doing anything at all. This is because he understands the psychology of the person he is playing. Listen to a couple of interviews with him about Wolf Hall and you'll get the idea.
To complete the third part of this series would be a guaranteed success. Woke politics won't allow it because it is too late to cast a black lesbian as Thomas Cromwell. It wasn't the actors. hello my lovelys And, for ceasing the monasteries where the flame of Christian faith was kept alive. The politics of the Roman Church was carried out by Bishops in they ran Cathedrals. The message of the Gospels, the venerated texts of Greece and Rome were preserved by monastics. Henry was no fool when he ceased power. He took it all.
They needed to go, really. Too bad he didn't take the whole bloody religion with them. But of course, it was too useful a tool for maintaining power to cast aside.
They were corrupt. The clergy lived like lords at the expense of the poor. Haven’t you heard of the monastery of Ronceval. It was infamous for debauchery and corruption as far back as the time of Chaucer. We English thank God for the Reformation. Pity we’ve lost our way.
I can't bring myself to watch this, even though I know the acting will be amazing. But turning Cromwell into some innocent clerk when he masterminded the plot to destroy Anne Boleyn is just horse shit. Everyone in this drama was morally ambiguous at best, and evil at worst, but Cromwell was the worst of the lot.
A large theme of this show is actually his descent from relatively innocent clerk to crossing the moral event horizon where he does some pretty dark things. You should like it!
Anne was no innocent and Cromwell was only acting to the will of the king. By the way it's an excellent book and show, don't judge until you've read it.
You need to watch the whole series (or the last Episode at least), it does not depict Cromwell as 'innocent' in the matter of Anne Boleyn's fall. It clearly depicts him as the chief engineer of what happened, at the behest of the King. He is portrayes as scheming, and at times two faced: a man who knew what was expedient, and did it.
I'm unconvinced. Aside from Boleyn, the kind of men he buried completed a certain circle of karma long overdue.. Revenge sometimes, but not very often, is a useful emotion.
@@philjamieson5572 Well, you are most certainly entitled to your opinion. It is not a fast-paced, action-packed miniseries.
