      I have a question for you I have fresh eggs they have not been washed their from my own flock of 7 but they have been refrigerated can I use refrigerated fresh eggs that have not been washed for this method? Thank you

      I was told if you use store-bought eggs you could take mineral oil and put a light coat over the egg which will seal up the egg pores

    I work for an egg company. Trust me! The bloom has been washed off with chemicals and a deforming agent in high powered spray machines. I do plan on scoping out the local gas station for the guy that sells farm fresh eggs for $2 a dozen. I can get eggs for free but I tried last summer to preserve my company’s eggs in high salt content of water and after three months, the eggs were chemically cooked and disgusting. Use farm fresh eggs!!!
    Edit: if an egg sinks in a bowl of water and lays flat, the egg is great to eat. If the egg stays on the bottom of the container of water but stands up, these eggs are still safe to eat but must be eaten very very quickly. Once an egg becomes botany and starts to float to the surface, the amount of decomposition in the egg can and more than likely will make these eggs toxic. DO NOT EVER EAT A FLOATING EGG!!!!

      I don’t float test my eggs, I shake test. I’ve eaten my personal farm fresh eggs that have been sitting on my counter for 3 months and they were fine. From my experience if you shake the egg and it sounds like there’s nothing but water in it then it’s bad

    When using several eggs at once, always crack open an egg into a separate bowl/dish to insure it's good THEN add it to there others already opened. This way one bad egg won't ruin the whole batch ;)

    Great video! My husband and I water glassed last March - August and just now started eating the March eggs. We did a comparison experiment for color, texture and taste with a fresh egg and could not tell the difference between a year old water glassed egg and an egg picked fresh. I love this method of preservation.

      How do you get the poop off the eggs if you're not washing them before you put them in the water bath? I have a friend that has lots of chickens and she gives me lots of eggs but a lot of times they have poop and hay stuck to them. Thank you

      @@susanpolanski1593 Oh sure! I'm sorry, I should better explain this. When you choose your eggs to water glass only choose very clean eggs. Lightly dust them off to make sure there is no dust, straw, or bedding on them. If they have poop on them they are not suitable to water glass. The fresh eggs are coated in what is called the bloom. This bloom protects the pores of the shell. I hope this helps. We have several jars of eggs we are leaving for a year and a half, and some for two years...just to see...

      @@susanpolanski1593 you can take the dirty eggs in a bowl covered with lime water. Use 2 oz (weigh it to make sure is 2oz) to 1qt water. Make as much water muster as you need to cover the eggs.I noticed he said 1oz but LDS group says 2 oz so you decide.

    Suggestion... Store in smaller, dated containers. This gives you better control over rotation dates. In a large container like a 5gal. bucket, it's going to take you a long time to get to that bottom layer of OLDER eggs. Just a thought.

    On my last bucket I put the eggs in first so I could point them all down and then I mixed my solution in a separate bucket and poured it over the top of the eggs and it was perfect none of them moved and they were all pointing down.

    Thanks for your detailed information.
    When delivering packages 📦 in TN, I came across an old poor man that was disabled and he had water glassed store bought eggs in the refrigerator (don’t think there was Lime involved) I was astonished, but he said “ the store manager gave me 12 dozen cause they get rid of them before they go out of date so I had to keep them so they won’t go bad” I guess that was a good way for him to eat on a low budget. I hope next time I go up to visit old customers I get to visit with him also.

      Understanding there's no obligation on your part to any of your customers...would you consider however, sharing tips (storing eggs in lime water in ex.) you've learned here and other YT accts with this disabled and elderly fellow, and others? Furthermore, if he's that low income, as many elderly, possibly without relatives that care or truly on his own...some pastas, a few pbutter or jam jars, or mylar pouches of ready rice & pasta side dishes, mashed potato (the cheap $1 type you find at WallyWorld and other local grocers) might be just a few bucks for you but a wealth of food security to him. Just a thought man. As mentioned, there's no actual obligation to anyone and we all can understand and agree on that.

      @@RiversideHomesteadLife A guy on canning rebels got store bought, rubbed olive oil on them and put into pickling lime, stored room temperature and has eaten the eggs so far that are 8 9 months old. I have glassed 36 store bought myself but have not eaten any yet.

    Just put up my first batch of eggs. We have chickens, and wanted a way to preserve for the slower winter months. 14-15 eggs fit nicely in a Ball 2 quart jar with exactly one quart of liquid. Thanks for the great tip and clear instructions!

    It's funny I was just dumping a pale full into the garden. I only got 12 months out of mine, but I'm still very happy with the results. Last year was my first time trying it. Definitely get food grade buckets as it seals the air out of it. The one I'm dumping into garden today was not food grade, but the other in storage is . It definitely works..

      Hi there! I was wondering if you would mind sharing how you knew your bucket full of water glassed eggs were bad? We didn't use food grade buckets for mine. We used large half gallon mason jars and the lids. We stared eating the eggs we water glassed in March of last year and so far we can't tell the difference between the water glassed and fresh. Thank you!

      @@nebraskaprairieladyprepper3422 I had a broken egg in bucket, and this one was towards end of season and some of the girls had weak shells. They all wasn't bad, but the smell from the broken egg I didn't want to chance. My second bucket is still doing well, and I'm starting a new one this week as I've incubated already and the 12 one year olds are all dropping fine.. Worse case garden got fertilizer. Lol.

    I’ve water glasses 12 dozen eggs so far. The most important thing is make sure the bloom is intact on the egg. They cannot be store-bought eggs. Also do not wash the eggs before you do the water glassing. If you wash them even a little bit will ruin the bloom and the eggs will go bad. I did that with my first batch and within one week I had multiple broken shells so I took them all out and started over. Make sure you put point and down in your bucket also.

      Make sure your nest box is clean. Save the clean eggs for glassing and eat or preserve the others another way.
      I have frozen eggs (cracked and whisked) also if you have too many.

    Just a heads up on buying food grade buckets, if you have any fast food/restaurants/local grocery stores like Burger King, KFC or a donut/bakery in your area they give away free buckets for the asking. Just call ahead to your local places and ask if they have any pickle/icing buckets w/lids. May not have lids but if so, they'll save for you. Just give the manager your first name and they'll let you know when to come pick up. Pickle buckets from burger joints and icing buckets from bakeries. You'll need to wash the bakery buckets outside with a water hose and dish liquid cuz it can make a big mess since there's colored frosting which also has shortening added. You may have to buy lids but at least the buckets are free. Vinegar smell will go away in a few days on the pickle buckets when left out to air dry after washing w/soap then rinsed.

      Don't store them directly on concrete.
      The lime in the concrete leeches into the plastic, over time, creating holes.
      It's actually _burning_ the holes in a chemical reaction.

    Wow! This was SO helpful to me!! I just contacted a friend who has fresh eggs ..so happy to try this method! Last Nov I bought a 2 lb. container of dehydrated eggs from Walmart for $32. That same amount is now $80!!! 😳

    This is great for HOME GROWN eggs , not so good for store bought because the bloom has been washed off .
    If you do this DONT WASH your eggs , or the lime will penetrate through the shell . Just a tip !

      @@Dollars6914 you must ensure that your nesting boxes are kept clean, also it is possible that the boxes can be made on a slant to allow the eggs to roll off to the bottom out of the way of other hens as they use the box .
      Checking the boxes both in the morning and in the evening might allow you to collect them before the hens have a chance to dirty them up , if you want clean eggs , you must keep your coop , and your hens clean .

    Just remember the bigger the container the bigger the chance of an eggshell cracking from the weight. Lost 3- gallon jars so far this year from an egg towards the bottom cracking.

      You can pickle your eggs and water bath can. There good as long as the seal holds. There are many types of brines so u can have all kinds of flavored eggs! My favorite is the balsamic vinegar brine with sliced onions in with the eggs. So many ways to use them. It's really quick to do. I am going to do some water glass eggs next!!!

    That's very cool. I saw a video of someone freeze drying their eggs. When reconstituted, they could not tell the difference. Maybe one person in the family could buy one and then the other members can pay for the use of the machine each time. The storage size is nothing for many eggs in a jar !! And the shelf life is amazing !! Or just get 2 chickens!! Thank you for your videos. !!

I'm in Ga and they have just started putting a limit on eggs . I found a women who has 50 chicken 's so I need to know how to water bath them and I know and trust all your advice .     I have done this for a few years now. By 12 months, the whites will break down, but eggs are still good for frying, baking and putting in dishes calling for eggs.

    Fantastic!!! I will be doing this method of storing eggs as I recently found a source for eggs fairly local to me at 2.50 /dozen range free and antibiotic free...better taste! Especially when eggs from the store are now 5.49/dozen and that's if I can find them...shortages here for sure and not looking like things will be improving anytime soon

      I got to speaking with an egg producer, here in the UK, who told me the main reason for the egg shortages, at least in the UK, was down to supermarket greed, as they offered the producers less and less, every year, while putting up their prices.
      Same with chicken, turkey, pig, dairy and cattle farmers.
      We had a financial meltdown, last year, due to govt incompetence, resulting in prices going sky high.
      I live in a tenement building, ten dwellings to a building, and garden in the back courts and in containers, for my building and two next to it.
      Like myself, most of my neighbours are elderly.
      I grow hardy varieties of fruit, veg and flowers all year round and charge each household £2 gbp per year and they get as much produce as they can eat.
      Compared to store and supermarket prices, my neighbours are more than happy with the deal.
      So far none of the crops have failed, so there have been no shortages.

    Great video. If you dont have eggs with the bloom on from a farmer AND if you trust your electrical supply then freeze store bought eggs. I break them and scramble them and put them in small glass jars leaving just a little room in jar for expansion. They're good for every purpose except sunnyside up. Theyll change color and consistency even when thawed but a quick scramble will bring them back to normal. You can also freeze liquid egg whites right in their cartons for use in baking.

    In England you can use store bought eggs because we don't wash(or refrigerate) our eggs, If you notice you will see that in the supermarket the eggs are NOT stored in the refrigerated section they are out in the open.

    I have done this, a yr is okay,I wouldn't trust longer. The lime eats the shell and if an egg has a thinner shell and breaks, well you have to clean all of them.
    You can cover them in oil and this is what I'm trying this year. Good for a year from what I have heard.

    I’ve done this and it works well. I prefer taking my extra eggs and putting them through the freeze drier. I can store them for about 20 years this way.

I noticed that the hydrated lime mixture settles to the bottom and was wondering if that is ok or does the mixture need to be stirred up every so often?     @Riverside Homestead Life New sub!! Just wanted to add, my grandma did this and would send me to the cellar to get them. She made sure I washed my hands first and took an large slotted spoon to carefully dip them out into a bowl. I wasn't to touch the water, as she said I could ruin the whole batch. She is gone now and I can't ask more about that, but I'm for sure not gonna touch that lime water!! Those eggs were so good, much bigger and deep golden yellow.

      @@RiversideHomesteadLife I also should have said that she told that to anyone who was sent to get the eggs, not just a 6yr old kid with dirty hands lol. She would always yell down the cellar door "use the spoon!" Must have ment something bad would happen if we didn't. Also they were in a mini barrel, like Cracker barrel, the insides were black, round circle wood lid. Didn't seem to absorb the water at all. They had many of them with things in them. I was born in 1961, my parents grew up in the depression they were born in 1923 & 1924. This grandma, born in 1900 my grandpa 1899. They all taught me that what happened to them would happen to me when I got older.... What my grandpa said has all been coming true. He always said if he knew the day before, these are the things he would have done, then he'd tell me so many things. When I was 11 he told me that I needed to really feel what being hungry felt like. He asked me you up for a challenge?, I said yes sir! He said from right now till you can't take it anymore, don't eat. Only drink water. He explained about fasting and praying and about how it would feel. He said I could stop at anytime and let him know what I had learned. Told me don't cheat on this, just like in school, you won't learn nothing. So I did it. By the end of the second night my stomach hurt so bad, I went to him and he said let's go to the kitchen. He started making me a plate and told me, that's what my daddy's stomach felt like just about the whole time he was growing up. He said there was food every now and then but if you gobbled it all up you'd be feeling like this again later on. He had me bless my own food he sat before me, between fasting and God my eyes were opened. As I cried over my plate of pork chops fried taters and black eye peas he asked me what did I learn? I told him I don't ever want to be hungry again and that's why my dad got mad when I didn't clean my plate. I learned a lot from him. He had a great way of teaching. He was Dean of agriculture. I have been so blessed to have learned that from him. Sorry to ramble on, but all that to say you're doing a great job with your videos teaching. Always pray what does God want you to say, and He will give it to you. God Bless you.

      @@michaelobrien4644 you're welcome. I've been remembering so many things that my family has told me to watch for or do. Like get extra socks and underwear and put them away and pray you don't need them. Theirs wore out and had no money for more. It was my dad who taught me how to darn socks. My mom taught me to make underwear with a drawstring because elastic might be hard to get or expensive. So many things like that. But mostly I can see that pain in their eyes and the seriousness of their voices.

    Love in rural area, so we do have locals that supply some of the grocery stores. Have been noticing lately, fewer eggs stocked. Price had been going up a dime here and there. The last I bought was 1. 89 doz. Today they were just under 3$. I was shocked. I may try water glassing. I just don't know how some families will make it because I'm sure these prices are going to continue riding.

    I also take fresh eggs and grease them with Vaseline and put back in the carton and store. I've kept them for a year and still good. Never kept them any longer so don't know how much longer you can keep them.you can also grease with shortening

    Thank you so much for this video. I am having a hard time finding eggs that are not washed. I keep looking. A friend shared the idea of stacking the eggs in the container then pouring the solution over them slowly. They don’t move around! My husband and I eat eggs every day!

    We get our buckets cheap or free from our local deli, like pickle buckets or smaller ones they had other veggies in prior to giving them to us and they come with lids too!

    I've also heard about adding salt to the brine to help protest against bacteria growth. I'm going to experiment with adding salt to one batch and am going to add colloidal silver to another batch. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the videos.

      So, a year on and what were the results?
      The colloidal silver was of particular interest to me, when you consider it's used in water purifying filters.
      One person I know has always sworn on putting a silver cross in his water supply.
      Not sure if his belief or just the silver has kept him safe and healthy. 😉😂

    If u have a chicken just keep ur eggs out for up to a year unwashed.
    If you buy store bought just paint them with mineral oil and they can stay out un refrigerator

      We usually keep our eggs unrefrigerated max 3 month is what we found to be for good freshness. I will look into mineral oil concept

      @@RiversideHomesteadLife ,,,I rubbed mineral oil on twenty dozen store bought eggs ,and kept out of fridge , for nine months ,,only had one bad egg ,,but i first turned all the eggs all one way then a month later i would turn them the opposite way ,,,i will do my eggs this way ,,,but great video!

    I have done my first batches of water-glass eggs. I ordered through a local farmer who sells eggs. When I ordered I capitalized the UNWASHED eggs. He delivered them and said that sometimes the chicken just drop their egg in the yard etc so he did wash a few of them. So I will have to check each one as I use because I will likely have a few that won't work from being washed.

      I've seen videos of people water glassing even store brought eggs......cover the eggs in mineral oil first. Then water glass as normal. I have not tried it so I'm not recommending it but it is something we should check into

    I tested this last year for my parents with my farm eggs. They didn't keep an eye on the water and 1/2 evaporated. Bad eggs. Note to self, cover the bucket, and keep an eye on it.

    Hi.
    Loving your videos by the way…thank you!
    I was wondering if there is a creative way to possible get or make stackable egg trays for buckets the keep the weight of the eggs from crushing the lower ones and keeping them spaced apart.
    I’m sure I could make something myself possibly by boring holes in another food grade bucket kid with an auger bit on a drill press for stability.
    The eggs could sit in the holes to keep them in the correct position.
    There would have to be some spacers between these trays of course but I’m always thinking of ways to modify things for easier operation.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned it. But when cracking open a egg. Use a separate bowl to crack the egg open and if it's good add it to the pan or a bowl with good eggs. If it's bad discard and wash the bowl. It's a good way of not ruining a whole bunch of good eggs in a bowl lol.

    Greetings from Canada! Your video is very interesting and I appreciate all the advice and tips that you gave.
    I have some questions about storing eggs with this method. I understand that Walmart sells big tubs of ice cream, and they're basically small buckets with a tight lid. I have some questions:
    1. Do you think such ice cream tubs, washed and dried, can be used to store and preserve eggs? I believe they are food grade, since they store ice cream. It's also easier to manage with lesser eggs, it's stackable, etc.
    2. Will the lid be tight enough? It's not airtight as the gamma lids, but it should be good enough since I'll be adding hydrated lime or pickled lime as demonstrated in your video. I believe airtight containers are not necessary because in the first place, air would get into the container when adding the eggs and pickled lime.
    I await your reply. Thank you.

    QUESTION: If eggs are store bought...would it be possible to coat the eggs with olive or coconut oil and then place them in the water? I used to oil my fresh eggs with the bloom and store them in the cartons at room temperature and they lasted for months.

    I just put up 2 jars of DEHYDRATED raw eggs. Salmonella is always a concern and the National Food Preservation recomends you do not do this. If done properly, yes you can! I also freeze them. And when buying cans for long term, Make sure what you are buying! Are you getting Freeze dreid Scrambled eggs? Cant use those for baking. And while they use a chemical for preserving their product, I only used an o2 absorber and vacuum seal. The Water glassing takes up too much space, and the lime does absorb into the egg! Try fermenting instead. And the uses for the eggshells, too many to mention. I may not like this method, But I do like YOU and your channel. We can always help out our fellow brothers and sisters. Information and knowledge is a valuable that no one can steal from you. Get Wisdom!

    A point to consider. The only time I've heard of this failing is with someone who had to move hrr bucket regularly. The eggs looked good but tasted terrible. Probable micro cracks that let the lime into the eggs.

    We started this last year and it worked out great for us. We used glass jars and would just bring one up from the basement and set it on the counter. We ate many of them raw and everyone is fine, lol.

      @@RiversideHomesteadLife for our family yes, we used gallon jars with screw lids so it was easy to grab a full jar and carry it up from the basement. We just set it in the darkest corner of our counter and pulled eggs out as we needed them.

      I don’t know which video, I’d have to look in record of UA-cam comments, I only remember your face… that said you’ve missed a few things that need correcting and you may want to make another video.
      1) you cannot use agricultural lime, only masonry lime- you are indicating they are the same. They are not.
      2) you must use distilled or purified water-- otherwise you may cause a chemical reaction, esp from heavy metallic city water.
      3) masonry lime is EXTREMELY caustic and will cause burns , permanent eye damage, worse to open cuts etc-- you must wear gloves/ eye protection when handling.
      4) masonry lime is only about $10-12 for a 40-50 lb bag. It is a paper bag that rips easily and the dust can easily get into eyes-- more caution. Must be stored in large construction bag to prevent moisture which will ruin it.
      5) when storing, good idea to staple a printout of msds to it, so others handling it know what it is. Will burn pets feet.

      @@annebrunner9698 well, I wouldn’t know but if that is the case then you’d think? it should be simple? for people to do a little research? and distinguish between masonry/agricultural lime (the point is to SEAL the embryo in natural shell to preserve- not “pickle” it, as one does a peeled boiled egg, after all…), and to know you cannot make videos mixing lime (assumed to be of any description incl masonry lime as in this one) with tap water???? (it is a very bad idea) and no gloves, protective eyewear, or any mention whatsoever of just how dangerous it can be to handle, move, and store it for oneself, one’s pets/ livestock etc/ kids/ others coming across it in someone’s basement/ barn/ etc. Not sure what your comment is meant to convey here so it can be taken to be a little offensive, if you followed the thread before commenting.
