  • UKRAINE WAR: "The Russians have already experienced a disaster there!" Now Putin is taking a risk!
Ukraine believes it is making good progress in its advance into Russian territory in the Kursk region. "We are achieving our goals," wrote President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday on the Telegram short message service. Russia also confirmed that Ukrainian troops had damaged a third bridge over the Seim River, which is strategically important for Russian supplies. Zelensky said the commander had informed him of the details of the offensive. More Russian soldiers had been captured. The president stressed that Ukraine's "exchange fund" had been increased. Ukraine wants to use the captured Russians to release its own soldiers from Russian captivity. There have been repeated exchanges of prisoners in the past.
Ukraine's advance into Russian territory on August 6 was a surprise. It is considered the largest invasion of Russia since World War II. The government in Kiev says it has captured over 80 settlements in the south-western Russian region of Kursk in an area of more than 1,150 square kilometers. In his evening speech on Sunday, Zelensky said the troops would create a buffer zone along Ukraine's border with Russia. This was part of a "maximum counteroffensive" aimed at weakening Russia's military potential. "Everything that causes losses to the Russian army, the Russian state, its military-industrial complex and its economy - all of this helps us prevent the war from escalating," Zelensky explained.
RUSSIA: THIRD IMPORTANT BRIDGE IN KURSK REGION DAMAGED
During their advance, Ukrainian forces have already damaged two bridges to make it difficult for Russian troops to resupply. A Russian investigator has now confirmed that Ukraine fired on and damaged a third bridge over the Seim River in the Kursk region on Sunday. A video message from a representative of the Russian Investigative Committee was published on the Telegram channel of presenter Vladimir Solovyov, who works for Russian state television.
Meanwhile, the commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, Oleksandr Pavliuk, said on the messaging app Telegram that the troops in the Kursk region are "successfully fulfilling tasks" and capturing Russian prisoners of war in order to exchange them for captured Ukrainian soldiers. Pavliuk did not comment on details or the number of prisoners.
On the Russian side, more than 121,000 people were evacuated from nine border districts in the Kursk region, the state news agency Tass reported, citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
Russia, for its part, continued the fight with a nighttime air strike on Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, all eleven drones were destroyed. They were aimed at the capital Kiev, among other places, but also at regions such as Kharkiv, Sumy and Donetsk.
