I passed through Zamora while walking the Camino a few years ago. I stayed a couple of days to visit all the Romanesque churches. The graffiti problem seems a lot worse now. I live in Perth, which is hardly affected by the graffiti issue. This is because professional graphic artists have been employed to work on big murals on the sides of large buildings. Ditto in regional areas where they produce paintings on grain silos. One such artist is Amok Island, born in Amsterdam and based in Fremantle. BTW, your travel videos would be better if you did a "behind the camera" commentary, so that we could focus more on the buildings being described. No offence, just a suggestion!
You are lucky in Perth. You mentioned professional graphic artists. These "grafiteros" are neither professional nor artists. They do it to leave tags so their friends can see it. Why I don´t know. In our town in Portugal a few days after the new pedestrian bridge was opened over the local river an artist called Akoni left his name in huge letters on the white paint for all the world to see. Recently, on the Monument to the Discovery in LIsbon a French "artist" scrawled a sentence in broken English (covering 20 meters) all across the base. The government had to pay 2,300 euros to have it removed. This French tourist is back in France and most likely will never be prosecuted for her crime.
Where is Perth located ? Spain ? My wife and I are looking for a nice place ( not Hot weather ! we have been suffering Hot weather in Atlanta, Ga. for over 25 years ! today is only 79 F 7;30 pm ... anyway we have to run the A/C night and day

Also behind the scenes what people don’t see is how many kilometers you probably walked to film this video albeit a smaller city. Travel Vlogging is great exercise.
A great, small city. A trip to this overlooked architectural jewel has been long coming. Zamora is connected to Madrid by train, which takes about one hour thirty. By the end of the year the Zamora-Ourense high-speed line is due to open. That will be a spectacular trip with kilometers of bridges and tunnels since it is a very mountainous area. I can hardly wait to try it out.
Agree with you regarding the blight that is graffiti, terrible to deface those old buildings. They should ban spray paint containers or somehow limit them to responsible users.
Having spent 30 years at the University of Salamanca in the summer teaching (1989-2019, I sometimes would get away to Zamora, lovely city, a must see in the region- do not forget to eat the famous Arroz Zamorano, will knock your eyes out
Stuart I was studying there for three years from 1966 1969 , in an university for children of working people fully paid by the state , what a good times ! Have you seen the romanic churches so well restored , Viriato monument, the Cathedral , Santa Clara Street all along , River Duero which flows at Oporto.....Zamora the land of bread and wine ....North Zamora is Sanabria lake simply amazing It looks like very much Nech Lake in Scotland surrounded by great mountains the glaciar lake biggest in Spain over 1000 meters above the sea level ! Western Zamora are our portuguese brothers .....if you go to stay don't go AC MARRIOT hotel , NH or Parador Nacional are quite better
It's beautiful in Zamora isn't it? It is a city but with a large town vibe, not too big and not too busy and no one seems in a hurry! I cycled through it when doing the Via de la Plata from Sevilla to Santiago. The whole of Castile y Leon was a privilege, so much so, I've flirted with moving there; with more manageable summer temperatures then here, between Málaga and Granada. The only thing that really puts me off is how you describe the area to have "long, bitter winters" not sure I can handle that!

I wish fewer governments focus so much on tourism stimulation. It's the low hanging fruit...it is making money out of old things...nothing wrong with it. But you end you creating cities for tourists, not for the population. Rather incentivize other industries, especially industries related to a future (whatever your belief of climate change is, I don't mind) that has a little pollution and thriving small cities with rich culture and bustling little economies. Thank you for the video Stuart. Look forward SOOOO much to finally move to Spain, build a life there so that I can explore these cities and towns in Spain.
Thank you very much for this lovely video Stew! More of these please! It was just wonderous. We also love that you fearlessly gave your opinion about the grafetti. We hate grafetti but love street art. We think it's very disrespectful to deface public historical monuments and private small businesses. These buildings are maintained through hard earned tax dollars that the Spanish citizens have had to part with even when salaries are so low. It must be hard for them to make that sacrifice, but it's so important to maintain your history. And the architecture is so impressive that it is almost an artform in itself. I would be so proud and want to maintain these magnificent gems. And it's difficult to open a small business and maintain it especially during a pandemic.Taxes and regulation is high, profits, I imagine are low. So when we saw two young people grafetting a small business in our neighborhood, we recorded it and showed it to the police. We commented that we did so on one of your videos. A commentor compared us to a fascist friar who reported disloyal citizens. He left a few comments in response to us that seemed like thinly veiled threats. And I think the comparison was unfair. Keep up the good work Stew and never be afraid to espouse your point of view and values!
Nice video Stuart but spoiled by graffiti in cultural, historic place. However it's not the first time I've noticed this when touring Spain. The culprits need some good "vimbio" at the very least or up before the judge and told to remove their hideous work. It's not as though any of this so called graffiti/ artwork is a "banksy". A real shame because as mentioned the local tax payers end up paying for it to be cleaned.
The location of Madrid was chosen purely because it is right in the center. Barcelona is on the Mediterranean just like other historical cities such as Marseille or Genoua. Sevilla has the Guadalquivir which was the only navigable river in Spain. Valencia had the Turia running through the city. I don't think it was navigable. The same goes for Zaragoza and the Ebro.
Madrid was selected by Felipe II because it was the best place of Castilla and the favourite town of his daughters. Best weather, lot of game, clean and abundant water, and no bishops.

Zamora looks very beautiful and interesting. Another for my list of places in which to pass a few days. Soria is another town on the Duero where Antonio Machado wrote Campos de Castilla and lived with his young wife Leonora. So much history and culture to enjoy.

Unfortunately no. But there are some small boats that you can use for an hour. It's completely free and very romantic, I have to say. I'm from Zamora myself and luckily enough, I'm still living here.

So many places plagued by graffiti, many Parts of Spain has graffiti which spoils so many places if they be historically significant or otherwise. There should be a campaign started to get areas cleaned up. Many tourist avoid areas where there is a lot of graffiti, this is not good for tourism when we need it more than ever. Gracias Stuart

I've had a go at making GoPro videos. I've discovered that moving, thinking and talking is a challenge. I know Stu edits his videos but he makes it look easy.
It depends on the person. He is the type of person who can do a few things at the same time. Some other people like myself can't. If I drive and talk at the same time I start to lose my concentration!

Excellent travelogue on Zamora. Like most people at whom graffiti isn’t aimed, I find it mostly atrocious but I think it’s about a generation putting its mark on a place it hasn’t got any other means of influencing. In my home city, town planners destroyed much more of historical and architectural value after WW2 all in name of progress than a few idiots with car spray do nowadays. Councils see ‘the youth’ as a problem but if they found ways to engage young people rather than demonising them, they might tackle the problem more effectively. Support young people with meaningful and paid opportunities to contribute to civic life and there might be fewer graffiti tags on the walls. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Zamora is indeed a very interesting city that I still didn't visit! PS: Viriato is from Montes Hermínios (Serra da Estrela), not from Zamora. OK, polemic started!
I know Zamora and the people there quite well and although the old part of the city may seem quite romantic and the high street (Santa Clara) quite peaceful and serene with people walking up and down ad infinitum BUT there is a hidden sinister side to this city which is not apparent until you live there some time and really get to know the people there. My experiences living there was nothing short of an absolute nightmare, extended family committed a fraud on a 97 year old relative of mine there and then attempted to do the same to me, when I rumbled them they ran away and stayed out of my way with zero communication despite them living 5-15 minutes walk away. People there can be rather cruel and narrow minded, the sort of things said and done to me by people would typically lead to fisticuffs in other countries (UK, Germany etc) but somehow people think that they can get away with it there. Gossip seems to be a national pastime there among the older generation, I think they have nothing better to do. In conclusion it's a very provincial town, with high unemployment and lack of opportunities and this leads people to be generally dissatisfied and desperate (hence why attempts to defraud me and my vulnerable members of my family were made). If you are an ex-pat I would not recommend that you live there, you will be seen as a sucker to be taken advantage of and people will lose interest in you as soon as they realize that they cannot pull a fast one on you. You may say "well I know people in Zamora and they're great and not like that" but I received a quick series of several very unpleasant and nasty experiences there with different sets of people (many unlinked to one another) which made it very clear that the place had some very serious social problems which I've never encountered anywhere else in that volume. If you like the isolated Spanish countryside than maybe just maybe it's worth getting a remote holiday home outside of the city but do not live in the city itself.
You are the second person to write extensively about family problems in Zamora. I seem to recall that the last one had an English sounding name and could have been English or American. The problems he had were very similar to the ones you mention. Do you know hiim, by chance?

do you know if there's a comercial bus and train station in Zamora to and from Madrid or is this area mainly accessible by car.

Excellent travelogue on Zamora. Like most people at whom graffiti isn’t aimed, I find it mostly atrocious but I think it’s about a generation putting its mark on a place it hasn’t got any other means of influencing. In my home city, town planners destroyed much more of historical and architectural value after WW2 all in name of progress than a few idiots with car spray do nowadays. Councils see ‘the youth’ as a problem but if they found ways to engage young people rather than demonising them, they might tackle the problem more effectively. Support young people with meaningful and paid opportunities to contribute to civic life and there might be fewer graffiti tags on the walls. It’s all a matter of perspective.

Really? Britain also has graffiti all over the place and unemployment is very low
@@javibarcenas5661 Not from my experience of living in the UK. Yes, there is graffiti but not to the extent I see in videos of Spain. In my local town I rarely see graffiti.
Zamora is indeed a very interesting city that I still didn't visit!
PS: Viriato is from Montes Hermínios (Serra da Estrela), not from Zamora. OK, polemic started!
I know Zamora and the people there quite well and although the old part of the city may seem quite romantic and the high street (Santa Clara) quite peaceful and serene with people walking up and down ad infinitum BUT there is a hidden sinister side to this city which is not apparent until you live there some time and really get to know the people there. My experiences living there was nothing short of an absolute nightmare, extended family committed a fraud on a 97 year old relative of mine there and then attempted to do the same to me, when I rumbled them they ran away and stayed out of my way with zero communication despite them living 5-15 minutes walk away. People there can be rather cruel and narrow minded, the sort of things said and done to me by people would typically lead to fisticuffs in other countries (UK, Germany etc) but somehow people think that they can get away with it there. Gossip seems to be a national pastime there among the older generation, I think they have nothing better to do. In conclusion it's a very provincial town, with high unemployment and lack of opportunities and this leads people to be generally dissatisfied and desperate (hence why attempts to defraud me and my vulnerable members of my family were made). If you are an ex-pat I would not recommend that you live there, you will be seen as a sucker to be taken advantage of and people will lose interest in you as soon as they realize that they cannot pull a fast one on you. You may say "well I know people in Zamora and they're great and not like that" but I received a quick series of several very unpleasant and nasty experiences there with different sets of people (many unlinked to one another) which made it very clear that the place had some very serious social problems which I've never encountered anywhere else in that volume. If you like the isolated Spanish countryside than maybe just maybe it's worth getting a remote holiday home outside of the city but do not live in the city itself.
You are the second person to write extensively about family problems in Zamora. I seem to recall that the last one had an English sounding name and could have been English or American. The problems he had were very similar to the ones you mention. Do you know hiim, by chance?
