Very nice tutorial on this technique. Thanks Mark. I'm going through one of your slap courses and really enjoy it. It's challenging and that's what I like about it. All the best!
American life is a lot easier than it seems. It's perfect to coordinate hammers while strumming and keeping a groove. The other easy masterpieces to study from him I thinks it's Laquer Head. Those songs are gold at the beginning for every groove machine wannabe that wanna sing too. I really love Les but Wooten and Miller are a step over him. I'm not blaming him, he's my hero.
man what a glorious sound off that bass!!!.I;m still trying to digest last week's Tommy The Cat.....this is more bass gold to help my furlough boredom!.Thanks Mark!
Great explaination. The only part that is not 100% clear for me is the two consecutive slaps on the B (E string) rigt after the double thumb run. It feels way more natural (imho) to end the run with double thumb also on the E string, followed by a slapped ghost note. Even you played the riff that way during the video at 06:05 .
DUDE! You can PLAY!!! That was the best cover of Marcus I've ever heard, Probably him, too. We're so caught up with/impressed by what a great pedagogue you are (now people are calling the authorities to report you as a sex offender, Sorry, not sorry. 😈). Perhaps that is not the word I was looking for. You are a superb bass coach and guide, you have an easy, natural delivery and always find ways of everything seem simple and attainable. But man, I forgot just how good of a musician you are. Damn son, are you in a band? Do you do session work?
Thanks. These days I spend all my time on Talkingbass. It's a 24/7 job because I do everything from web design to course design and creation, marketing, the youtube stuff and much more. But prior to this I was a professional musician for a long time doing any gig that came my way from sideman work to theatre work, cruises, jazz gigs etc. I began playing in 1990 when I was 15 so I've been playing a while. The stuff on here is usually fairly easy to be honest. It just looks hard if you're technique isn't up to it. But most professional players I know would find all of this stuff laughably simple to be honest.
PLEASE do make a tutorial of Marcus Miller´s " Infatuation". the main riff. i love the lessons you do. you are good at break it down in a simple way, love it.thx again. peace christopher sri lanka/denmark
Happy new year from Germany , it's time to thank you for all your great lessons. I practice them now for a year to become a better Bass-Player in slapping . It's really successfull. Greetings, Jörg Wilmink
Amazing video thank you very much! Please could you make a tutorial for I’ll be there of Marcus Miller? It would be awesome also because nobody has published one on UA-cam yet. Thanks again!
Nice work and thanks for the assist. I've been loving this track since it came out, and never thought I might be able to play it. Starting to get the feel of this riff now. Just have to master the other 3 and a half minutes!
Mark I love your videos, they are fun, informative, and brief. Also blessedly free of clickbait and extended yapping unlike some other prominent UK-based instructors... ahem
Awesome! Just wondering if it would even be possible to hit all those notes without slapping, popping, and double-thumbing? Could you play the notes with a pick, or the fingers, or the thumb and fingers? And what would that sound like?
Sure, you can see the transcription. Riff is actually really straight forward, it can easily be played finger style but it would sound nothing like in the track...
Hi Mark I’m new to slapping and wonder how you get that tone. Is it all just the way you strike the strings or is there more to it (Ed settings, etc)? Thanks
That fast piece used to be such a bitch for me. The only way to make it sound clean is to sit down and practice with the metronome for a while. I took me almost a week of practice to play it clean like on the record
Great lesson mark, I’m trying with the old slap technique but I’m a pic player at heart and would love a breakdown of the bass solo in Genetix by the Stranglers if there’s any chance? 😄👍
More Marcus lines to break down? Detroit and Blast are probably my other two favorites of his songs and either one would be great
I second that motion. My favorites too.

This bit from the beginning of "blast" that sounds like a sitar
Mark I love your videos, they are fun, informative, and brief. Also blessedly free of clickbait and extended yapping unlike some other prominent UK-based instructors... ahem
I gotta ask...Are you talking about the bald Scott? That dude is good, but I think he takes too long to get to the point lol!!
@@danmcgrew6975 Yes. And he is good, no doubt, but at this point his videos are too slickly optimized, almost like infomercials.
Why didn’t you do this video with your Marcus Fender?!?!?
What’s the name of the bass you’re playing?
Is it possible for more cliff burton lessons in the future? Great video btw!!
Always with great content, you are a beast of a player.
Hi Mark. Thanks a lot! Detroit would be great!
Fantastic Marc! Could you show us as well Pluck from Marcus?
That bass has has such a cool, crisp, funky sound! (I'm pretty sure the bassist has nothing to do with it Lol!)

Mr. Clean has a super groovy line in the middle starting at 3:10
Hi Mark I’m new to slapping and wonder how you get that tone. Is it all just the way you strike the strings or is there more to it (Ed settings, etc)? Thanks
eq settings
This is pretty much direct. Flat EQ on the bass direct to desk. Added a bit of amp simulation after, but again, flat EQ.
Mean as🤘👽🤘
Thanks, this was a great lesson ! Since you were asking, why not make it ‚Bruce Lee‘ next time 😊?
Pls do the What is hip Marcus Miller version
That fast piece used to be such a bitch for me. The only way to make it sound clean is to sit down and practice with the metronome for a while. I took me almost a week of practice to play it clean like on the record
What gauge strings do you use?
Regular gauge DR Hibeams. 45 to 105
Not using your MM Fender? Why ? :(
Out of commission at the moment.
Great lesson mark, I’m trying with the old slap technique but I’m a pic player at heart and would love a breakdown of the bass solo in Genetix by the Stranglers if there’s any chance? 😄👍
Funk joint, rampage, scoop, cousin john
Scoop!
Taping a plectrum to the thumb might work as a nail :-D
Difficult to see you do this riff without the Marcus bass itself. Great job tho.
You can't hold no groove
Coming soon
