Nicko's single pedal work is some of the best in the game! His speed and consistency at his age is honestly incredible. The whole band is such a tight unit. They're all so dedicated to performing the absolute best show for their fans every single night and you can SEE it on their faces every show! Bruce had throat cancer and is still up there belting out like it never happened. How can you not love them?
At the 2000 show I got back stage and thought, wow Nicko finally started playing a double pedal when I heard the recording for Wicker Man. NOPE! He played it live on a single with a single pedal! Was was standing about 20 ft behind the kit in awe.
I've been to 10+ shows since june of 2003 (my first show at Stockholm stadium, actually holding on to the front barrier almost exactly mid-stage for most of the gig and only moving back about two paces when i was dehydrated at the end) and it's obvious that they still love it!
@@MrMystery666well he played a lot simpler following that and I think it was heartbreaking for him. He'll be determined to get to playing full pelt if his body allows it. His health has to come first but if any can overcome this it's Nicko!
My dude had a stroke in January, left him half paralyzed, he's doin' better and ready to do more shows! Up The Irons🤘🏼! He's the only metal drummer you can't see playin' behind the kit, only when he stands up to acknowledge and salute the fans. Clive Burr (R I P) is the original awesome drummer on this song, creating the offbeats in the verses.
My son and his friend took me to Nikkos restaurant, because in a fan. When he is there he will play his drums etc to maiden songs. I went outside to have a smoke and Nikko came out and stopped and started talking to me. He is very humble and thanked me for being a fan like 20 times. I ended the talk after a hour. What a great man. I've been a fan since 1983. You can tell he loves music.
Nicko has such as unique style and a great groove. I vaguely remember Steve Harris saying that when Nicko was hired for Maiden they were worried he might be too funky for them. Some people criticise him for not going to a double bass set-up (they have done one song 'Face in the Sand' with a double kick) - but Nico has said that the reason he doesn't double-kick is simply; that he doesn't want to copy guys like Lombardo, who are masters of this style of playing. Nico has his own style, no other metal drummer sounds like him. He's such a big part of the Maiden sound.
The whole Flight 666 documentary covering their 2008 world tour is fantastic. The passion of the fans, especially at some of the South American shows later in the film, is truly something to see. A couple of little details you might not have noticed, Nicko plays barefoot, and holds his left stick with the butt end forward.
Hopefully you check out some of Nicko's drumming videos. He is truly amazing and in my opinion VERY underrated by the music establishment, not that he cares about it. A very funny and very humble human being that just happens to be one of the best drummers in the business 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
If you get to a certain level of thought, you discover that you can indeed choose to like or not like something. Commonly happens to parents, who would be miserable watching TV with a toddler, if they didn't choose to like TV meant for 12-30 month old audiences. And Nicko has chosen to enjoy his work/life/situation.
Playing with Maiden? how could you NOT have the time of your life!! Especially in South America, those fans are fucking nuts!! (not like the rest of us are not, but they show it so much better)
Such a great drummer, very underrated,my youngest son & I met him at the end of June at his drum one shop in Manchester,we had been meaning to go there for a few years,so for him to be in attendance at the shop was lucky for us,he was really gracious,we have a lovely photo as a memento. I hope his recovery is going well as he suffered a stroke in January, keep up the good work.
Glad you finally got around to some Maiden! As a huge Maiden fan I obviously love this track, but I think it would've been better to feature a song where Nicko composed the drum part himself. This song was recorded by their former drummer, Clive Burr (RIP), who was a fantastic drummer in his own right and worth exploring further. For a great Nicko song, I'd recommend "Where Eagles Dare" as it's his debut track with the band and really shows off his compositional skills. "Caught Somewhere in Time" is another great one, especially showcasing Nicko's lightning fast right foot.
Yes, hes bloody amazing particularly as he plays single kick. My 80s and 90s kits were massive because of Nico and Neil, then i realised I couldn't play like either! I'm about to pull the trigger on a 4 piece like my 70s kits were. Nico is a force of nature. But Let's not forget Clive Burr eh? RIP. He played on the early albums , including Number of the beast. Peace and love brother as always ✌️ ❤️
Nicko is one of the best drummers, and all of the other members of Iron Maiden are amazing! Powerslave was my first Iron Maiden album, and I listened to it so many times. I still listen to it or at least some of my favourite tracks. I have seen them live at least 4 times, each time was a great show. They love their fans, and they show it. #UpTheIrons
I saw them on the powerslave tour The tuning of Nicko's drums have changed over the years. Listen to anything from Live after death and the drums are tuned so much fuller and genuine.
Nicko is so smooth, he makes the complicated beats, riffs, and fills seem effortless!! The best drum part he does is Where Eagles Dare off the Piece of Mind album. It’s the song I find the hardest to play!!
NICKO have always many surprise in each bootlegs or shows i see... Tons of drummer play the same way all off their tours.... For me Nicko is a DRUM TEACHER just the way he change his play in amazing way...good drummin thinkin of course... and what a terrific right feet !!!
I've loved Nicko for years! The Trooper intro is constantly in my head\Air drum list, Also Bruce Dickenson loves to fly the plane two midnights to midnight
you should do the clansman live 2001 9/16. not only does nicko play drums but dances a scottish dance at the start. he always seems to have a big grin. i love how he introduces himself as the handsome one.
One of the genuine happiest guys I've ever watched. Always smiling and joking around behind the kit. Might not be the greatest of all time but he is absolutely on the short list!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Nicko twice at his Toys for Tots fundraiser at his restaurant in Coconut Creek, FL (Rock and Roll Ribs). He's an absolute gentleman and has a great sense of humor! I have a signed drum head, framed, hanging on the wall. Such a great guy!
Best overall concert I have ever seen was Iron Maiden Power slave tour. Growing up just outside New York City in the 70s and 80s, I have been to my share of great concerts, and they were tops!!
Thank you for sharing this video with us. Nicko is so underrated. I suggest listening to him on pat travers, putting it straight. One of my favorites is gettin betta. He kills it. Also I want to thank you for your channel. As an old drummer, you encourage me to keep my kit from getting too dusty. Makes me feel a bit younger.
I will share my story from the “Powerslave Tour” in Winnipeg Canada when I was a teenager. It ruined going to concerts for me as I previously had NO idea that bands have a backing track supporting their onstage performance… The bigger of the two guitarists guitar strap broke where it attaches at the heaviest part and body crashed onto the stage-out of nowhere a guitar tech came out with a replacement guitar and just picked up the other one with the broken strap. The guitarist sheepishly smiled at the crowd and started playing again. AMAZING to us, there was NO gap or MISSED NOTES and for many of us it was a revelation to find out the “backing tracks”. There was even a mention about the incident in the concert review in the newspaper the next day!
And he's such a lovely guy, too! 😃 As I've seen and heard many times in a video on the Sonor Drums channel where he's giving a tour of his 'Legacy Of The Beast' kit 😁 And the position of his Ride cymbal and how it's covering a third of the toms below it has always intrigued me 😄
because of nicko, I started playing drums myself as a child in 2002, I have been a big idol for myself and the whole iron maiden has been my favorite band since I was a child!
I’ve never been a huge Maiden fan musically, BUT I have an immense respect for what they do and the standards they set. Maiden at 95% is still greater than many others at 100%! On Nikko himself, he’s one funny guy in drum clinics. He’s a really sound guy.
I'm 50... changed my life from 16 yrs old....saw them.. met them.. memorized them...STILL get emotional watching them play.....Iron Maiden live is like watching Lord of the rings ...you'll never see anything like it again in your lifetime.....magic.🔥🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
listen to them, see them play always put a strange smile on my face, it's pure joy and fun, they have nothing to prove, these guys are great musicians, long live Iron Maiden, we need bands like this!
Excellent reaction, Andrew! Iron Maiden albums from the 80's are sacred, masterpieces! - Iron Maiden (1980) - Killers (1981) - The Number of the Beast (1982) - Piece of Mind (1983) - Powerslave (1984) - Live After Death (live album, 1985) - Somewhere in Time (1986) - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)
Remember reading an interview with Tommy Lee from Motley Cru saying that he was backstage at a gig and saw the size of Nicko's kit and just thought it was all for show. Then he watched him play and was like, "Holy shit, he uses all of it!"
What is really amazing at this point .... is the fact their age and they STILL WILL BRING A HOUSE DOWN !!!! Also, what is really cool is to see the generations of fans all together enjoying one of the BEST bands ever
Check out their first 5 studio albums Iron Maiden 1980, Killers 1981, The Number Of The Beast 1983, Powerslave 1984 and Somewhere In Time 1986. Both Clive Burr (1980-1983) and Nicko mcBrain (1984-) are at their peak in those albums.
Clive Burr passed in 2013, he was the drummer on Number of the Beast, Nicko joined on the next album Piece of Mind, I was a fan right from the opening drum fill on Where Eagles Dare, still my favourite Maiden album. Aquiles Priester did a tribute vid for Clive about 10 days ago, prior to this upload, definitely worth checking out. "TVMaldita Presents: Aquiles Priester playing Killers - Iron Maiden (A Tribute to Clive Burr)"
I saw MAIDEN in 1984 on the POWERSLAVE tour for my first concert ever. IT changed MY LIFE!! Nicko became my 1B favorite drummer behind Neil Peart. Just a total monster!!!
That was the "World slavery tour" I saw that tour in 1985 {in Australia} , and also" The Beast on the Road" tour in 1982 , I my humble opinion that was the best time to see maiden....
I’ve seen these guys several times. They always put on an amazing show. The first time I saw them they still had Clive Burr playing drums. He was excellent, too, but Nikko’s been with them since their 5th album & he’s a monster drummer.
Got lucky to see them on this tour in 09 when they played Christchurch... What an epic show, they were full speed for 2 hours and the theatrics were awesome.
Fun fact, they paid for thier local pub to be picked up and moved brick by brick Closer to thier home, I'm not sure if it was the Ruskin arms where they started back in Paul Di'Annio's days, but man, thier dedication to what they love is beyond astounding. And yes, what they love the most is their fans. Up the Iron's forever!!
I remember the first tour with Bruce and Adrian back in the band. I was a snobby teenager right in the middle of my "only the most skilled and technical bands are worth my time" phase, but the energy and spectacle of that show shut me up. The most impressive show I had ever seen at the time and still high up on my list of favorite shows ever.
I got so excited I thought I was dreaming! Finally! Iron Maiden on the channel ❤❤❤ I've been waiting for this, I hope I can afford to put in a request one day, but I'd love to see you cover more Maiden. The studio version of Where Eagles Dare has got some drum chops on it, The Trooper from Rock In Rio is a short song, but iconic, Hallowed Be Thy Name from the Flight 666 DVD was filmed in my home province of Ontario Canada so that has a soft spot for me, Passchendaele from Death On The Road has super creative high-hat work that is based off of Morse code used in the battle, Brighter Than A Thousand Sun's from Abbey Road is a killer track that has a lot of Maiden signatures in it... Dude I could go on! Just so stoked Maiden is finally here on the channel! The Prisoner with original drummer Clive Burr in 1982 is amazing, Nicko is my man, but Clive was a hell of a drummer but illness cut his career short.
I saw Maiden live 2019 Legacy of the Beast tour Totally mind blowing Aces High or Rime of the Ancient Mariner fastest single bass drummer Nicko is amazing
As others have said, his single pedal work is phenomenal. Listen to the song “The Wickerman”. You’ll think it’s double, but it’s not. CRAZY stamina. Gives me shin splints just listening to it.
I’m into Maiden since 1989. Went to their No Prayer For the Dying tour: smaller venues, much intimate experience. This year though I’ve enjoyed so much the Future Past show in Milan. 40+ years around, still filling stadium like venues and bringing together at least 5 generations of fan is not a joke. Up the Irons! 🤘🏻
About Nicko being underrated? I've been a drummer for.... holy crap, 40 years now, and in my travels, I've not met too many other drummers, or musicians in general, foolish enough to deny this man, the RESPECT he fully deserves. I play metal, prog, and... funk, but yeah, metal and prog. When I've fumbled my way through a Maiden song or 2, I try to honor him, by removing my 2nd pedal, as he's hardcore opposed to doublebass. So, him also being the drummer that first lit my fire, and made me pick drums, at SEVEN lol, I've been very heavily influenced by his drumming, and back before I could afford an extra bass drum, or double pedal, when they popped on the scene, I used a ludwig speed king, for I bet the first decade or more of my career. That gave me a speed around Nicko's, but without the surgeon's precision of course. But this man has inspired me to spend the last 40 years, trying to catch up with his ass.... and I've failed miserably, but it's ok lol
I am in the UK and 51. To date i have seen Maiden live 33 times up to this year. I don't think there is a band on the planet with that many of best in class musians in one band. From Bruce on vocals Steve Harris on Bass! Adrian , Dave and Janick on lead and rhythm guitars and Nicko on drums. They just got better and better with age.
LOVE Nicko! Will only use a single kicker for his bass out of principal! Super fast footwork! He used a double kicker for one song just to try it, and it was like one, long, nonstop bass drum! Face in the Sand.
you're right. it is all about the music. nothing before the show. but they have fun on stage, gers draping himself on dave's shoulder, bruce using a sword on nicko's drum. on the clansman 2001 9/16 bruce glances over and grins as he sees nicko dancing a scottish dance. bruce squats and dances, both feet in air while gers dances around.
I'd love to see your reaction video to the song Brighter Than The Thousand Suns by Iron Maiden. I think more complex and not so popular songs are really great material where you can dig deep and share your knowledge and experience.
As they age, most drummer "dumb down" or simplify the drum parts. Nikko has been adding parts for decades. Hope he has a full recovery from his recent stroke and continue on with the band. First time I saw them, he was the new guy. Powerslave tour was his first with the band and it was legendary! 🤘🧙♂️🤘
Small tip, search UA-cam for Iron Maiden - The Clansman (Stockholm 2003) Also, Bruce's speech from that same concert is interesting =) I can recommend all of the live recordings from Stockholm Stadium in june 2003, they came back in november (iirc) of 2003 to the arena now called the Ericsson Globe and that was a nice concert as well. Not really in the same league, but i was spoiled by the 36+ thousand outdoor arena being my first big concert in life.
Now listen to it again with the knowledge that Nicko only uses a single kick pedal… (No prayer for the dying is possibly their worst album, so having that being one of the first things you encounter isn’t going to leave the best impression)
Nice to see Iron maiden and Nicko on your channel. Nicko is awsome and funny. No one looks so relaxed when playing the drums as he do. He barely move his body or even his head playing all drums and cymbals all around. I think you should watch a video all on him, either a live consert or a show of session... I know such videos are out there. You should also check out Iron maiden live with the previous drummer Clive Burr, also a great drummer. I would recommend 'Hallowed be thy name' live from 1982.
if youd like a clear view of Nicko playing may i suggest reacting to "Nicko McBrain peforming Wasted Years live @ Rock N Roll Ribs - 4/15/2011" the sound isnt the greatest but its a great view of him playing Wasted Years which has some great drum parts! Love that youve been reacting to Bill Ward and other greats recently!
If you want to really see Nicko at work than do Where Eagles Dare live at Ullevi Sweden. One of Maiden's most intense drumming songs. Bruce is good here, but he was even better in the mid 1980's. Iron Maiden have always had their mascot Eddie and still do. If you want to see one of rhe best drummers in Japanese metal, watch Lovebites Nameless Warrior from live performance Knockin'at Heaven's Gate. Haruna is nicknamed Little Big Engine.
I've been listening to hard rock and heavy rock ever since I discovered Alice Cooper, Zep, Purple, etc. around 1971/72. But it wasn't until The Number of the Beast that I totally got hooked on metal. The song and LP are a monument to music, unsurpassed and unsurpassable.
I understand that this was an Iron Maiden review. I would really like to recomend Iron Maiden's cover of "Crosseyed Mary" from Jethro Tull. This would be part of a B-side collection. Also in the B-side collection look for "Rainbows Gold" , a Maiden original with a great opening from Nicko.
Iron Maiden rhythm section is unmatched in metal nicks is top 3 best metal drummers of all time being able to keep up with 3 guitar players is absolutely insane
Give Rime of the Ancient Mariner a watch, the camera focuses more on Nickos drum work, its the version from the Flight 666 dvd. Great channel & insights.🤘🏻👊🏻
I've been a huge Maiden's fan, since I was a kid, some decades ago, and I gotta tell you Iron Maiden had had quite a good drummer before Nicko joined the band - his name was Clive Burr (R.I.P.) and I also wanted to say that you might not enjoy Maiden's music (and it's all right!), you might be an expert in drums, but when you go commenting about Nicko's performance, have in mind that he is perhaps the world's greatest drummer who has not died yet! (R.I.P., Neil Peart!)!
If you want to react to a drum forward Iron Maiden song where Nicko put on a clinic on drum fills you should watch Where Egals Dare Live At Ullevi, Sweden.
NICKO is my idol since 1985 because he always ADD something in each song at each show.... very imaginativ and dynamic drummer... watch HOW he UPGRADE "Hallowed by thy name" in live concert compare to CLIVE BURR the original one... WHAT A BIG STEP IN GROOVE with is right feet made for STEVE HARRIS purely... etc etc A LEGENT with incredible fiils...crazy good......
Ever wondered what other bands would sound like if Bruce was their singer? Raphael Mendes sounds exactly like Bruce, he perfected ever nuance of his voice and does covers of other bands as Bruce, Helloween, Dio, Megadeth, Guns & Roses etc. He also has other YTers play the music, no pre-recorded tracks.
Nicko only uses a single pedal on his bass drum. He never did like the double bass setup or using double pedals. I've met him many times when I lived near him in South Florida, and that's one of the questions I asked him.

I diesagree with your first statement. The part where it says "some of" is incorrect, and removing it, will make the statement true lol

For drums, caught somewhere in time is an amazing piece, I love how the drums just drive the song on.
I've seen almost 200 bands live and Iron Maiden is definitely one of the best performers ever. The energy and joy they all have is infectious.
Nicko is one of the most underrated drummers. The whole band is so tight when they play that they just get better and better
I've seen Maiden live a few times, always phenomenal, very theatrical.

I was just about to say the same thing about Where Eagles Dare.
Nicko is one of the most overlooked drummers out there. Maiden fans know, but he definitely doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He's incredible!
I've loved Nicko for years! The Trooper intro is constantly in my head\Air drum list, Also Bruce Dickenson loves to fly the plane two midnights to midnight

Nicko is so good! Anything from their Rock in Rio DVD is worth a look. Iron maiden at their absolute best.
"Maiden Enland" is their best live. Setlist is out of this world
One of the genuine happiest guys I've ever watched. Always smiling and joking around behind the kit. Might not be the greatest of all time but he is absolutely on the short list!!
Can feel that warmth and that he's a good human on top of great drummer

Hi Andrew, the best introduction to Nico's drumming is the studio version of Where Eagles Dare (1983). Be sure to check it out.
Where Eagles Dare is trademark of Nickos drumming! Perfect drum part to serve the song. Nicko was the reason why I started playing drums.
I’ve never been a huge Maiden fan musically, BUT I have an immense respect for what they do and the standards they set. Maiden at 95% is still greater than many others at 100%!

I'm 50... changed my life from 16 yrs old....saw them.. met them.. memorized them...STILL get emotional watching them play.....Iron Maiden live is like watching Lord of the rings ...you'll never see anything like it again in your lifetime.....magic.🔥🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
51 shows and he still impresses me every time
listen to them, see them play always put a strange smile on my face, it's pure joy and fun, they have nothing to prove, these guys are great musicians, long live Iron Maiden, we need bands like this!
I met Nicko a few years ago. What a fantastic fellow he is
That comes through from his beaming smile
Nicko used to do drum teaching around the UK ,it was always village halls he used , he preferred grass roots level people
yes Andrew this is one of the best live performance bands ever
Good awesom old school drumming, he influenced me since i startet play the drums, i love nicko
Nicko had been hugely influential on my playing. He's got a style and.vocabulary all to himself.
My favorite single kick drummer!!!
No Piece of Mind? :P Some of Nicko's best work!
Beginning of the year hè had a minor stroke and still started rehearsals for the current tour running at 70% to his Words and still killing it
I saw MAIDEN in 1984 on the POWERSLAVE tour for my first concert ever.
@@MickH60 I meant it was in support of the PowerSlave album.
I’ve seen these guys several times. They always put on an amazing show. The first time I saw them they still had Clive Burr playing drums. He was excellent, too, but Nikko’s been with them since their 5th album & he’s a monster drummer.
Wasn't piece of mind album no 4?
@@olabergvall3154 yes, you’re correct. I think I was counting Maiden Japan.
Nicko is one of my heroes and I had the pleasure to meet him at a show Dallas in 2000. Great guys!
I've been to Maiden for the first time this yeas and it was breath-taking.
The track was originally played by Clive Burr on the album
👌
As others have said, his single pedal work is phenomenal. Listen to the song “The Wickerman”. You’ll think it’s double, but it’s not. CRAZY stamina. Gives me shin splints just listening to it.
Not me, no way.
PLEASE DO ONE OF THESE OF VINNY APPICE! MAYBE EARLY 83-85/LATE DIO 93-95. A really heavy hitter allways in the pocket!
Let's not forget Bruce dickenson has recovered from throat cancer, and nicko is recovering from a stroke early this year then went on tour
Iron Maiden have been going for nearly 45 years and it still amazes them that their fans are getting younger, their music has spanned the genrations.
Iron Maiden toured a year or so ago, their set was ~3 Hours long
I am in the UK and 51.
High angle on the ride made it easy to target the cup and projected the sound outwards more.
Nicko is such a kick ass guy. Genuinely a gem of a human being.
Iron Maiden are one of the most professional and beloved bands on Earth
He is a LEGEND and ever top
Nicko hace con un solo bombo lo que varios no pueden con dos.!
Abrazo desde Bariloche, Patagonia Argentina
One of my favorite live albums ever, honestly. Had such an impact on my playing as a teenager 🤘🔥
Nicko is the groovy metronome. Live after death taught me rondrum
03:26 do not forgett this rolls/ fills what Nicko play there !
It's all quality!
Nicko owns a restaurant in Florida where he will sit in with the house band and has done some videos from there. You should check them out!
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Check out one that you missed! REACTION PLAYLIST ► ua-cam.com/play/PLqspKksRqaUURy8K34sBSKvuGo3ApmLC2.html
Small tip, search UA-cam for Iron Maiden - The Clansman (Stockholm 2003)
Also, Bruce's speech from that same concert is interesting =)
I can recommend all of the live recordings from Stockholm Stadium in june 2003, they came back in november (iirc) of 2003 to the arena now called the Ericsson Globe and that was a nice concert as well. Not really in the same league, but i was spoiled by the 36+ thousand outdoor arena being my first big concert in life.
Now listen to it again with the knowledge that Nicko only uses a single kick pedal…
(No prayer for the dying is possibly their worst album, so having that being one of the first things you encounter isn’t going to leave the best impression)
I honestly think that if Nicko never became a musician he would have been a stand-up comedian and actor. He's a natural funny guy.
I bet!!
His interviews are the best. Nice, polite and funny as hell.
I want to see them live badly.
I hope they hit the east coast US soon
Nick's drumset always reminded me of the Chopper of sets. Put a couple Harley Davidson stickers on it and some tailpipes.
The OG drummer on this album was actually Clive Burr.
Iron Maiden rhythm section is unmatched in metal nicks is top 3 best metal drummers of all time being able to keep up with 3 guitar players is absolutely insane
Pachendale... A great Nicko song. Live 😊
Should check out the original drummer of Iron Maiden and who originally recorded the drums for this song.
Super solid rock. What a beast (pun intended).
