VW Golf MK7 (5G) rear door water leak

  • Wet floor in the back row of Volkswagen #GolfMK7 is a common issue caused by damaged seal of the speaker. #Water draining though the back door is slowly dripping on the #footwell and can cause further damage in the car. To fix this "wet carpet" issue you will need to remove door card and the speaker.
➡️ To remove door card you need to start with interior door handle trim. Then remove two torx screws. There's also a lock that you need to rotate - hidden behind the red reflective plastic. After that you need to pull the card towards you. It's held by 6 clips. With clips undone slightly lift the card to release it from the edge close to the window. You can disconnect all wiring from the door card or hang it somewhere to have access to the speaker.
➡️ Speaker is installed with rivets which you need to drill out. Then you can use knife to remove old seal and replace it with new one. I'm using neoprene tape. Also you can replace rivets with screws to have more control over the force used to hold the speaker in place.

Use silicone glue all around the speakers and problems solved. My only concern is that this might not be the main cause of the problem as there are lots of other holes for the door trim clips which wasn't sealed. So it looks like water wasn't meant to be in there at first place , so the outer window apertures seal isn't doing their job anymore which requires replacing and maybe check if the drainage hole in the door is blocked which create build up .

I just managed to pop off just the bottom of the door panel and it was just enough room to smear silicone sealant around the speaker. Hopefully it will sort it.

I found this vid helpful. 2015 Golf SV, both rear doors leaking into footwells.
Removed door card, drilled out the speaker-housing rivets, cleaned away the perished foam-rubber seal, applied bathroom silicone sealant to same location as previous seal on the speaker housing, placed back in the door and used new pop-rivets to re-secure. Door card re-attached.
    Some points:
A set of proprietary trim-removal tools is recommended.
The two securing bolts for the door card are easy to access and remove. The quarter turn securing fixing (behind the reflector), is also straightforward to turn (I used a torch to help see this). The other door card pop-in locators/fastenings are a real pain to get released. Bank on some of these being damaged in the process as the plastic is quite brittle. I suggest buying a few spares before doing the job. Lifting the door card off at the top of the door requires more upward force and “wiggling” than I expected. I disconnected the electricals to allow door card to hang away from immediate work area. Re-connections and putting everything back is a doddle.
One other thing, I fashioned a small piece of tough plastic sheet to tape inside the door metal, draped behind the full height of the speaker, to act as a water deflector. A bit fiddly to do but hopefully will give another level of protection.

FOR EVERY GOLF 7 OWNER: check these out:
(tip: keep a toilet paper roll in the sidepockets of the booth. Thats how i noticed my problem, it was wet, even tho no water was visible)
    1. slam vents (water in booth or underneath the backseat) take vents off, clean and apply tons of silicone, new ones will corrode eventually.
    2. Panoramic roof drains (they might be clogged leading to infiltration by the panoramic roof) ugly mess, stained interior on all walls down to the footwell.
    3. Speaker sealant foam (all 4)(water underneath the speakers grill and on the inside of the door sealant at speaker level, leads to water in the footwell and mold later) ugglier mess.
    4. Reverse camera cover/drain pipe (water in the booth).
I was lucky. Had all of them.
    5. Tail lights. Water in booth. Dont know how to fix this, but check after pressure washing your car.

      6. while fixing the speakers check the holes for the interior door trim clips, if there are water dripping stains (on the metalic part of the door or the rubber part of the clips), consider applying sealant or vaseline.

Just come across this problem in my 2013 Mk7, having already sorted out leaks from the tail lights and also the rear bumper vents 🙄 Quick question with this and it may be a stupid one, but rather than drill out the rivets and remove the speaker/holder, would it not have the same effect to leave the speaker in place but apply a sealant around the outside of it, to stop the water from behind the speaker coming into the car? Thanks in advance.

It’s becoming a common fault on all Mk7 and the Mk7.5 rear doors leaking water into the footwell from the speaker seal, also the large rubber grommet that has the door wiring loom can leak water too. I found if your remove the speaker housing and run a bead of sealant like tiger seal then refit the speaker housing back into door, it’ll never leak water again.. I usually do the large rubber grommet at the same time while you have the door panel off.

Had exactly the same problem, and the flanges where the screws go through were cracked as well. I put non-hardening sealant all the way round the speaker flange, used large self-tapper screws with big washers, but it still leaked. More round the door hole and it still leaked. It runs off the bottom of the speaker but can be getting in all the way round, I can see beads in the cracks in the flange for the upper screws. I can't see those spire clips and foam tape working properly, I'll have to get a replacement speaker.

Hi buddy, I followed you and managed to repair my speakers and have had no further water leaks. However, 6months later, I've got stop/start malfunctions with the EPC light sending the car into limp mode, as well as the car intermittently failing to restart from stop/start. NO fault codes are showing and I suspect a corroded electrical component is causing voltage spikes and other electrical havoc.
Do you have any advise on possible electrics that could have been affected under the carpet? I never removed it and the back footwells were pretty soaked.

Might answer myself.... Is it because the speaker needs lots of room/air on the backside to sound good? But then again, smartphone speakers sound good for their size. Car speakers should be able to be closed off and still sound good.

This video is dated the 25th July 2020, I have had the same problem on both sides of my golf I repaired the right hand side last year, I bought a brand new speaker and the correct pop rivets and refitted the new speaker which is supplied with a sticky gasket to stop the water leaking into the vehicle, big mistake wasted my money it did not solve the problem, had to remove the door panel again this time a few of the panel connectors broke costing more money. This time I used a silicon sealant all around the speaker casing, let it cure for 24 hours then did a water test and I am pleased to say this worked.

There’s other holes lower then the speaker is so water can get in that way.

I knew exactly where the water was coming from but I couldn't figure out why it's there. Thanks you for your research!

@@mrfixpl Ok, it's actually not that easy in my case. I just did what you said, tested with water and the problem is actually the strip around the whole metal panel on which door's components sit. I can't remove it, do I just silicone around, will that work well? There are huge gaps, all molded.

Actually only one part is molded, but it's pretty big gap. Also all four doors. Seat Toledo II.

Some time ago I've bought set of cheap speakers to install in an arcade machine and had those 4 lying around. No idea how it's called. 😅

Having the same issue with my 2014 gti
I have caught it late and it seems the water is now under the carpet on the back floor
Carpet is dry to touch but if I squash my hand down on the floor I can hear more water
What is the best way to drain that does anyone have any advice?

On the U.K. forums most people have just used bathroom sealant. Works a lot better
