Every tyre has a join. Find the join and put the valve on the opposing side so they cancel each other out. When you see a wheel with lots of weights on its because they have not done this.

I tried it your way but failed so I had to use levers. No damage though thanks to the plastic rim proctectors .

Top tip Nick. Big bike tyres have a mark on the outer casing to indicate the heaviest part of the tyre.
