Full Thai rules in my opinion is more dominant when Muay Thai is fought with clinch, knees,.elbows and standard strikes and kicks. I trained many years in TKD and then spent 15 years training in Muay Thai. Elbows and knees do so much damage with other Muay Thai combos. Granted, Karate guys like Thompson and TKD Uriah are great UFC fighters, but if you're gonna add a stand up martial art to your MMA arsenal, Muay Thai is first go to.
The snap back of a kick is really important ( stop the grab hold ) Limed the karate guy knee raise as a block against kicks . I often did same in kumite.

In reality, no true karate master would step into a boxing ring as a result of a challenge. Karate-do, traditional karate, is not about winning competitions. It is about improving oneself. Today’s westernised karate is not the karate of old. Emphasis is now on how good one looks and how showy one can be, a good example being synchronised kata. All show, skilful, yes, but not what karate is/was intended for. It is a martial art not a sport. Many karate techniques are now forbidden and rarely practiced as they are far too dangerous for competition. That said, total respect to Muay Thai fighters. True spirit 👍👏👏
Karate is not designed for competition, it's designed for self defense. It encompasses a wide array of strikes such as finger jabs to eyes and throat, palm heel strikes, throws, takedowns, & attacking the vital organs of the body. Wrapping your hands and stepping in the ring against a kickboxer is not a wise move by a Karate fighter.
Also, if they use all their techniques, they will do serious injury and therefore also disqualified and maybe even banned from the sport wholesale. I am also confused about competition Karate: I did train Karate for a very short while in my childhood, and I were no good at all, by the way (much better at boxing), and we were always told, that Karate would never be a competition sport, because it is simply to dangerous. Buakaw is simply the best Muay Thai fighter ever, but I haven't see one fight where the Muay Thai fighter do not use an unfair strike ..like this one and also the same in the fight with Andy Hug..The difference is that Karate demands also character and honour ..the Muay Thai is simply street fight ..there is no nobility in Muay Thai....brutalism is the target ...

Real Karate uses every one of the techniques that you named. You must be watching dumbfuqs do kyokoshin and just stand there and punch each other in the chest. That's bullshido.
To somone who said Karate is about self-defense and because of this should not do boxing: It's right that Karate is meant to be self-defense, also at some point about eliminating and killing people. Self defense is also about realising the importance of its own life and protecting it, even it means to kill somebody else. It means preparing, but doesn't mean we seek for it. Sure, with such a style you have disadvantages against a boxer, fighting with gloves, don't use kicks, elbows, throws. Putting on gloves also reduces the deadly impact punches can have. But still you can learn something from it, also as a karateka. Learning to fight without killing just for a competition is also an important lesson. And for someone self. Why not learn punching from those who have specialised in it?
In my personal opinion Karate shines more in an mma style ruleset for the following reasons. 1. A low guard which many karate fighters use makes countering takedowns easier. Bigger gloves also make a high guard more effective. You see more combos in kickboxing because I might have to tee off on your gloves to open up a body shot. In MMA the gloves are smaller making it harder to hide behind them. You see less shelling, less combos, and more 1-2 knockouts. I personally feel the Karate philosophy works better here. 2. The Karate stance is often a wide bladed stance, or a wide front stance. This works really well to quickly move in and out, as well as making it easier to defend takedowns. The downside is it leaves you open for leg kicks. There are other ways to defend leg kicks, but overall it's more of a danger in thai style competition. If use a karate stance I have to be well aware of the leg kicks. 3. Power and conservation of energy. You can generate a lot more power with a low guard. By throwing a cross from your hips you can generate torque and fire from strange angles giving you devastating knock out blows. Look at where Conor McGregor fires from. His hips. But often in boxing with bigger gloves the defense of having your hands up can outweigh the offensive benefits of having your hands down. Keeping your hands down also requires less tension and less energy. That little bit adds up over multiple rounds.

Andy Hug has almost 20kg more than the Thai boxer. This is not fair. Matches should be in same weight class to compare. For me Thai boxing is superior. Thai boxer rarely exposes his back to the oponent.
Muay Thai without gloves exists in centuries. It's *deadly* not just dangerous. They adapted to comply more to a sport. The original was a true martial art used in battlefield.

@@ericastier1646 Kyokushin uses some Muay thai principles esp body conditioning and sparring. Before, just like Kung fu, (traditional) Karates dont really emphasize on sparring. They're mostly breaking boards and doing kata, which are useless in fights. Kyokushin doesnt kick with feet like other Karate styles. Instead, they kick with conditioned shins. As I said already, if you dont tell who is who, people cant tell which is which because they both look pretty much the same.
People want to fight Muay Thai Fighter (Nak Muay) but not in Muay Thai rules. Half of these video are not even fight in the rule of Muay Thai or even equal.

It looks these matches don't allow elbows, knees and clinching. It is basically kick-boxing versus karate. In some of the videos, the karate guys look more like kick-boxers than karate fighters.
The most aggressive is the voice of the speaker. It is overflowing with testosteron. The actual fighting is - compared to this - childs play. The voice can even make a monk becoming aggressive.
Do you understand that getting a black belt in a real style of Okinawan Karate takes 6 to 10 years even if you are your Sensei's best student? In Isshinryu karate, it's 3 months per belt for the first 4 promotions, then 4 months per belt for the next 2 promotions, then 1 year per belt for the next 4 promotions. Add that up is 5 years 8 months at a bare minimum if you are training 3 hours per day 5 days per week in the dojo. These "black belts" are not even old enough to have earned a real Okinawan karate black belt if their senseis were following the minimum teaching standards requirements.
the first fight was supposed to be as per kyokushin karate rules (no punches, elbos or any hand strikes to the head allowed). the mua tai guy clearly violated that rule with his left hook to the head. It wasn't the left high kick that has been blocked by the karate fighter. just look at the video.
Not a big deal, no punch to the head is not a worthy fighting for any style and unrealistic. It's like saying let's do a run competition but you cannot use your feet.
@@Nikitas1978 Because in the order of bare fighting methods fists will always be the most important and of course to the head. That is common sense. It's like in a running contest the most important are legs, feet and only then arms. Running without using arms is possible but not without using legs. In the same way fighting restraint regulation without using punch to the head makes no sense. Why ? Because it develops wrong habits letting you think you are at a safe distance when in practice you will get punch knocked out before you know it. And this is practical talk lived. I came from a kung fu/muay thai school and after moving had to find a new school and all the karate and TKD black belt that i encountered in sparring were easy knockout because they had developped years of wrong habits assuming you cannot punch to the head and were open so many times even if they had deadly kick techniques it made no difference. And that was with sparring rules allowing punches to the head (with head hear). In addition you see that all the time as in this video top karateka full of confidence challenge another style and make impressive useless kicks and get knocked out by boxers.
Karate is not practical techniques but it develops mental toughness first, body toughness second. Then when they learn to fight karate black belt have to change a lot of their movements while muay thai fighter need make zero change.
@@ericastier1646 What you say is true. It seems as though the deciding factor in fighting is SPEED. Traditional karate is rather stationary and stoic. But the people who seem to win the most are the faster fighters. A moving target is harder to hit while they can land multiple hits on their target. The days of fighting like Bill Wallace and Joe Lewis are over. It doesn't take many calf kicks before a fighter is changing stance to hide that leg.
At this level the results clearly depend on the fighter and his trainer, not on the style of any kind of martial arts! For example, Semmy Schilt learnt originally Ashihara karate and ruled K1 for years.

Muay Thai fighters spend a ton of time conditioning their bodies to take blows. It makes all the difference not fearing being hurt to tactically put your self in a better postion.

Traditional-fancy Karate always loses to Muay Thai all the time. Only Kyokushin can fight toe to toe with Muay Thai but Kyokushin itself is more Muay Thai than Karate. Now styles dont matter. They all look pretty much the same Muay Thai, which focus on body conditioning and sparring. You can forget and throw fancy useless techniques out form the windows. If you dont tell people who is who, people dont know. They both look like they are doing some Muay thai. Karate spends most time doing some kata that doesnt work in real fights and Muay Thai spends most time practicing elbows and knees just to be disabled in real fights. Thai kickboxing win all the way, every day! I am not a thai boxer or Asian, by the way, but a Dane, who has trained boxing a bit. What especially impress me, that several of the best Muay Thai fighters literally has competed for three or four decades and fought hundreds of fights, some of them fighting every weekend for long succession too. Try to find any martial art, where the fighters can match that! Muay Thai is the perfect balance, it seems, of effectiveness in battle and longevity for the fighters, which equals, that it is not too hard on the body in the same time. Meanwhile boxers, for instance, when they have won a belt, can hang on to it literally for years, without even admitting to a fight, and still many boxers retire early with debilitating physical damages. Even Muhammad Ali, arguably the most successful boxer of all times, suffered permanent brain damage and speech impairment. I value my physical abilities over money anyway, so this is, why the crown has to go to Muay Thai.

Muay Thai is bad ass. I practiced Kung Fu and Ok Kenpo. A lot of the arts have ridiculous katas, not sure if Muay Thai does katas. Proficiency is the individual not the style. I would say for survival Judo would be the best art.

Okinawa karate is full contact. Japanese karate is rudimentary shallowness suitable for children. Kyokushion karate along wth Hapkido is very powerful in full contact combat

Also, you use the term "karate master" too loosely, because you are not permitted to be called a "Master" in most styles until 7th Degree Black Belt. Most of these guys are JUNIOR black belts and are not even middle tier black belts.
It is not a full-contact tournament. Elbow and knees were not allowed for this type of tournament. To know the true value of fighting styles against each other, all the deadly strikes should be allowed.
I'm ex military. I was never taught to compete. I was taught to kill and destroy. I have no interest in competitive fighting. If I must fight, I'm going in for the kill. Anyway possible. No rules. Anything goes. It's over when the target is down and likely dead. Yes, sounds tough and macho. I have no use for tough or macho.
Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about at 3:14, the kick was blocked but the Muay Thai fighter followed it up with a punch to the face that was against the rules of the match.
Andy Hug should have been knocked out at the early stage having received two hooks to the face had these not been declared illegal. This was a fight under Karate rules. Muay Thai seldom goes for singular strikes. It instinctively unleashes a 3 to 4-hit combo. I think the Thai fighter just let go of the fight as elbows and knees were not allowed.
In the first the karate Black belt goes down not because of the kick, but because he g’ets punched in his face, witch is not allowed in kyokushin karate.

Karate has many styles. Not all Karate is the same. Example Kyokushin is very different from Shotokan.

In my personal opinion Karate shines more in an mma style ruleset for the following reasons.
1. A low guard which many karate fighters use makes countering takedowns easier. Bigger gloves also make a high guard more effective. You see more combos in kickboxing because I might have to tee off on your gloves to open up a body shot. In MMA the gloves are smaller making it harder to hide behind them. You see less shelling, less combos, and more 1-2 knockouts. I personally feel the Karate philosophy works better here.
2. The Karate stance is often a wide bladed stance, or a wide front stance. This works really well to quickly move in and out, as well as making it easier to defend takedowns. The downside is it leaves you open for leg kicks. There are other ways to defend leg kicks, but overall it's more of a danger in thai style competition. If use a karate stance I have to be well aware of the leg kicks.
3. Power and conservation of energy. You can generate a lot more power with a low guard. By throwing a cross from your hips you can generate torque and fire from strange angles giving you devastating knock out blows. Look at where Conor McGregor fires from. His hips. But often in boxing with bigger gloves the defense of having your hands up can outweigh the offensive benefits of having your hands down. Keeping your hands down also requires less tension and less energy. That little bit adds up over multiple rounds.

Andy Hug has almost 20kg more than the Thai boxer. This is not fair. Matches should be in same weight class to compare. For me Thai boxing is superior. Thai boxer rarely exposes his back to the oponent.

Muay Thai without gloves exists in centuries. It's *deadly* not just dangerous. They adapted to comply more to a sport. The original was a true martial art used in battlefield.

Good obvservation, karate is not practical even kyo kyu shin which is combat oriented is more about toughness of the knuckle than dynamic fighting skills.

@@ericastier1646 Kyokushin uses some Muay thai principles esp body conditioning and sparring. Before, just like Kung fu, (traditional) Karates dont really emphasize on sparring. They're mostly breaking boards and doing kata, which are useless in fights. Kyokushin doesnt kick with feet like other Karate styles. Instead, they kick with conditioned shins. As I said already, if you dont tell who is who, people cant tell which is which because they both look pretty much the same.

The same applies to fighting styles. Each style has different goals, and not all are suitable for competition. Anyone who understands martial arts knows what I’m talking about. And as someone already mentioned above, it's the fighter, not the style, that matters.
Let's be honest, I don't see any of them who look inexperienced. They all seem mastered their arts. All are renown champions if not ones of the respected masters.

Personally I believe that if anything is allowed and the fight is without any rules Muay Boran (the initial thai fighting art developped long ago for war also called the art of the 9 limbs in difference to muay thai which has been regulated forsport competitions) would be superior.

It looks these matches don't allow elbows, knees and clinching. It is basically kick-boxing versus karate. In some of the videos, the karate guys look more like kick-boxers than karate fighters.

In Thailand, muay thai is a job. Karate and taekwondo are hobbies for rich kids.
The thing with karaté is, the skills you learn work only in movies.
Do you understand that getting a black belt in a real style of Okinawan Karate takes 6 to 10 years even if you are your Sensei's best student? In Isshinryu karate, it's 3 months per belt for the first 4 promotions, then 4 months per belt for the next 2 promotions, then 1 year per belt for the next 4 promotions. Add that up is 5 years 8 months at a bare minimum if you are training 3 hours per day 5 days per week in the dojo. These "black belts" are not even old enough to have earned a real Okinawan karate black belt if their senseis were following the minimum teaching standards requirements.

Muai Thai fighters are insanely durable. They'll break you in half if you try to match their toughness.
Faiuls to mention that Muatai places great emphasis on adaptation and anticipation. Karate is more rigid and tends to repetition.

The worst thing you can do as a karate practitioner is restrict your hands with padding, but this is sport, so I suppose there's no avoiding it.
the first fight was supposed to be as per kyokushin karate rules (no punches, elbos or any hand strikes to the head allowed). the mua tai guy clearly violated that rule with his left hook to the head. It wasn't the left high kick that has been blocked by the karate fighter. just look at the video.
Not a big deal, no punch to the head is not a worthy fighting for any style and unrealistic. It's like saying let's do a run competition but you cannot use your feet.

@@Nikitas1978 Because in the order of bare fighting methods fists will always be the most important and of course to the head. That is common sense. It's like in a running contest the most important are legs, feet and only then arms. Running without using arms is possible but not without using legs. In the same way fighting restraint regulation without using punch to the head makes no sense. Why ? Because it develops wrong habits letting you think you are at a safe distance when in practice you will get punch knocked out before you know it. And this is practical talk lived. I came from a kung fu/muay thai school and after moving had to find a new school and all the karate and TKD black belt that i encountered in sparring were easy knockout because they had developped years of wrong habits assuming you cannot punch to the head and were open so many times even if they had deadly kick techniques it made no difference. And that was with sparring rules allowing punches to the head (with head hear). In addition you see that all the time as in this video top karateka full of confidence challenge another style and make impressive useless kicks and get knocked out by boxers.

Karate is not practical techniques but it develops mental toughness first, body toughness second. Then when they learn to fight karate black belt have to change a lot of their movements while muay thai fighter need make zero change.

@@ericastier1646 What you say is true. It seems as though the deciding factor in fighting is SPEED. Traditional karate is rather stationary and stoic. But the people who seem to win the most are the faster fighters. A moving target is harder to hit while they can land multiple hits on their target. The days of fighting like Bill Wallace and Joe Lewis are over. It doesn't take many calf kicks before a fighter is changing stance to hide that leg.

At this level the results clearly depend on the fighter and his trainer, not on the style of any kind of martial arts! For example, Semmy Schilt learnt originally Ashihara karate and ruled K1 for years.

Muay Thai fighters spend a ton of time conditioning their bodies to take blows.
It makes all the difference not fearing being hurt to tactically put your self in a better postion.

Try to find any martial art, where the fighters can match that! Muay Thai is the perfect balance, it seems, of effectiveness in battle and longevity for the fighters, which equals, that it is not too hard on the body in the same time. Meanwhile boxers, for instance, when they have won a belt, can hang on to it literally for years, without even admitting to a fight, and still many boxers retire early with debilitating physical damages. Muay Thai is bad ass. I practiced Kung Fu and Ok Kenpo. A lot of the arts have ridiculous katas, not sure if Muay Thai does katas. Proficiency is the individual not the style. I would say for survival Judo would be the best art.
You're comparing fighters that do this professionally (Muah Thai) vs typical 9-to-5 karate master who never stepped in a ring before.

But it depends on the rules, and most times, it's only the karate, kickboxing rules that put the thai boxer at a disadvantage. Trained and taught in both so I know this to be true.
Also, you use the term "karate master" too loosely, because you are not permitted to be called a "Master" in most styles until 7th Degree Black Belt. Most of these guys are JUNIOR black belts and are not even middle tier black belts.

3:17 you can clearly see the kyokushin fighter block the kick then take a left hook to the face. This is often over looked in this video.
Andy Hug should have been knocked out at the early stage having received two hooks to the face had these not been declared illegal. This was a fight under Karate rules. Muay Thai seldom goes for singular strikes. It instinctively unleashes a 3 to 4-hit combo. I think the Thai fighter just let go of the fight as elbows and knees were not allowed.
