I work in the heat. The big thing is actually staying hydrated even off the trail. Start a few days before and start upping your hydration game so your body is fully prepared.

    Great tips! A few more:
    1. Dip your sun shirt and hat in water, just like the buff.
    2. Hike early in the morning and set up camp by noon; wade in a stream or swim in a lake if available. Relax in camp.
    3. Use Drip Drop powder for electrolyte hydration - tasty, and equivalent to an I.V.
    4. Dorky sun hat - Sun Day Afternoon makes one with a big brim and flap in the back
    5. Go kayaking instead!! 🤪
    Congratulations on the weight loss!

wait what?? camp by noon? theres at least 12 or so miles after noon. maybe a nap but never a camp.
I've only kayaked once...I have a dream about somehow lugging a kayak into one of the sierra lakes. I can't imagine a more peaceful float. Someday

The main challenge is that your body loses more water & salt that it can absorb. Cameling up and _pre-loading_ salt is a good start. I found articles on long-distance running helpful.

I have lots of issues with overheating during the summer. Even mowing my lawn can be tough. Here's what I do...
Plan trips with frequent water sources
Plan trips that are more in the woods with less exposure to the open sun
Plan the campsite to be near water so I can wipe down or go for a dip at the end of the day. One time, I just laid down in the water until my core cooled down.
Hike earlier in the morning so that you can relax at camp during the heat of the day.
Wet my buff to keep the top of my head cool (tried a merino wool buff this year - it held the water better, but wasn't as cooling as the cheap buffs I have - I may try one of the cooling buffs)
Frogg Toggs Chilly Pad and/or Chilly Mini across the back of my neck. Having something cool on the back of my neck is important.
Get your feet wet (wear shoes that dry easily) Cooling my feet can give me an energy boost. Short hikes during the hot days (4 to 6 miles max)
Since you brought it up - insects... I switched to picaridin from deet a few years ago. Great stuff. Used stuff from Off, Repel, and Sawyer. I like the aerosol spray for my clothes, gear, & shoes. I use a pump spray to spray some in my hand and rub over my skin. The lotion was good and spread well, but I find that when I sweat (and I sweat a lot) the lotion got slimy on my skin.
Poison Ivy - I carry some castile soap with me, just in case I get into some. Haven't had to use it on a trip yet. I had a tiny bottle with some liquid soap in it, but I'm switching to a small piece of a bar soap.
For the insect bites (and poison ivy), bring some Benadryl or other antihistamine and take some before bed. It helps relieve the itching so you can sleep better.

A follow on to your clothing tip is to get clothing that is light in color! Black, dark colors absorb the heat where white light colors will reflect the heat. Having a black shirt in the sun is like having an electric blanket around you! I spent time in the Middle East and everyone’s clothing there is mostly white, loose fitting outfits. They know a thing about the heat over there!!!

Good tips and well presented. I use the Mission Cooling Gaiter 12 in 1 or one of their towels. Now I wear long sleeves in the summer with a high UV block. As a skin cancer ( arm , ears & the top of my head ) survivor , the Supplex nylon Guide wear from Cabelas are my go to shirts ( & slacks ) anytime outside , especially when canoe camping. They have high UV block and dry in minutes. Also a wide bream hat in a light color is nice. I found out the hard way with skin cancer on the tops of my ears ( & head ) from years of wearing base ball hats or no hat. Since it's long sleeve shirts and slacks for me they are treated with Sawyers Permethrin and Sawyers Frishermans Formula for the skin. My gear ( Backpack , hammock or tent , clothing , hat , socks , shoes ) are also treated with the Permethrin since it does not destroy gear like Deet does. Most of all for June , July and August the best way for me to beat the Florida heat , humidity and sun light is inside with the AC going. Most of all if I'm out there , I remember it's " Summer time and the living is easy " , so I slow down & enjoy life.

Great video. I'd recommend anyone hiking/backpacking in the heat to learn and know the various symptoms of, and treatments for, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. You can go from heat cramps to heat stroke to dead in minutes if the proper treatment isn't given. If you've been a heat causality, you are more susceptible to becoming one again, so let those with you know that.
Duluth Trading extra long Armachillo boxers. Keep the family jewels on ice and cut down on chaffing between the thighs. Also, wash the undercarriage a few times during the day - another advantage of a bidet.
Uniqlo Airism long or short sleeve undershirt (not the cotton one). Very light weight, excellent at keeping you cool, and and costs about $15.00, if they have them in stock. This might cure that strap friction for you.

AMEN brother - I'm not real sure about all the symptoms but just like rain, everyone should experience what is possible in the heat. I did a hike a few years ago here in San Diego - regarded as the toughest hike in the county I stared at it for months while I trained to tackle it. Then when I showed up at 0 dark thirty to start. there was a trail closed sign....which I promptly ignored and set off. Got turned around at the top and technically lost with the trail in sight the whole time (figure that out). cost me an hour...did I mention it was Aug....which I now know was why the trail was closed. It's 100% exposed uphill both ways for about 12 miles. it mattered not how much water I carried. I could hear it sloshing in my belly. My organs were being roasted...getting out of direct sunlight is the absolute first thing. There was no shade. The irony was, I was so exhausted I laid down for a nap with about a 50/50 chance of waking up in the shade of a big red stop sign in the middle of the mountains warning of the dangers of going beyond that point in the heat.
Moreover, I guess I wasn't too worried at that point but when I was trying to find my way back to the trail at the top I waved off a sheriff's helicopter that came to check on me. Don't let your ego get you killed. It happened so quickly. Be safe all. And for the record there was a ticket on my truck, parked on a public street cause they knew it was me up there. So now I pay attention to signs....sometimes

All great tips.... in 2000, I rewalked Colin Fletcher's 1000 Mile Summer hike from Mexico to Oregon. It goes through the east side of California's deserts including Death Valley. Talk about HOT and SWEATY!!!! Yikes...
I fought blisters the whole way and I tried every trick in the book other than one Colin did, which as I recall was wiping down his feet with alcohol. I'm not sure which type, but I think it's safe to assume it wasn't beer, wine, or whiskey!

Hello John how are you doing today. Man you touch on some very very important information here. It is only June and me and my son done already suffered some serious sunburn. We are just now recovering from our sunburn. We had a check-up with the doctor yesterday it's looking okay. I have to go back to the doctors to make sure mine did not turn into skin cancer. We all like to have fun in the summertime but we got to take care of our body wow out there. I make sure I had plenty of Beverage very hot day. I have had heat stroke nearly passed out and was in the hospital for a week for not having enough fluids in my body on a 96 degree day with the heat index at a 110. I was on a kayak trip that the time with no trees around for shade. I kept falling into the water to try to stay cool but it wasn't helping. The back of my neck & my feet are the first too that starts burning the fastest. I made my son's watch this video with me so they understand how important this is. Thank you so much man for the reminder man. You have a safe trip man and be safe out there. Hope to see the video of it. You and your family have a good weekend.

#1 - I pour cold water over my head and soak my hair and shirt.
#2 - Mindset. If I am trying to withstand the heat, I feel tired and faint. If I pretend I am paying $100 for a hot spa visit it becomes pleasant.
#3 - Umbrella. Keep the sun off, without a hoody.

Canada is really big you know. Here in Ontario where I live it's already been in the high 80sF with unbearable humidity. Don't alienate a bunch of potential viewers by generalizing Canada as cold all year round. Even where Justin is. Tho he's lucky enough to have the mountains.

On a really hot day, dipping your hoodie in water and then wringing it out and putting it back on will cool you down quickly. Drink lots of water.

Great tips but dont use carmex or blisstex, they have ingredents that actually drys your skin out more! do some reasearch into what the igredents are I cant remember sorry, but aviod beeswax as well. good ol vaseline will do the trick. There are also some good companies that have SPF lip balm

Adding Gatorade powder (or similar) to your water definitely can be helpful, but do *not* put it in a hydration pack (water bladder, reservoir, etc.). Save it for your bottles or a cup. If you put it in the pack, you'll never get it all out.

  • @LeviBoldt

Never use Carmex in the sun! Yes, it moisturizes, but you might as well hold a magnifying glass to your lips as far as UV rays are concerned, and sunburnt lips are the opposite of what you want. A better option is DCT by Blistex. That moisturizes at least as well as Carmex, but is SPF 20.

I know the answer to this one....hike in the west baby hike in the west.
Hey John thanks for another great video. I gotta say, in your case, the camera does NOT add 10 lbs. I knew you weren't a twig but I didn't know you were such a big guy as early as last season. I'm not sure you mentioned how much you've lost. I bring it up not to call you fat but because I'm trying to motivate my only buddy to start hiking. I'm not a twig either but I've got a bunch of years hiking now and at 59 I'm down 35lbs from my last hike (more sick than awesome exercise and diet). I got him out on a cpl hikes and he loved how it felt after and just won't find the time. I wonder if you can address in a video how you motivate yourself. How its different (like this vid) from the more average person. We all know the simplest things are just a pain when we have weight on. At our age his health isn't good. Tying my shoes and getting in and out of a tent were tough for me. I'm sure thats what he thinks about. Thanks again for the stuff you cover Cheers
