    Great video! (And background music!) Thanks so much for choosing us and helping spread the word! You’re exactly right that to judge insulation’s performance you need time but we’re confident you will be pleased. Give Kramer a scratch behind the ears for us!

    Pros and cons to both, we opted for spray foam because it has a higher R value and is more sound deandening than the wool.
    Can't wait to see how your build turns out!

      Pianos use wool to "deaden" the high decibel frequencies of steel piano wires, for centuries. Now, I'm curious to know how spray foam would react, by comparison. Now you have me curious (spray on piano dampers?).

    For the windows you might want to try 3M crystalline or a ceramic tint. It really reduces the heat intake through the windows.

    If you haven't already, make sure to check if there is a local distributor because you might be able to pick it up locally ( I feel like there is one in Chattanooga) and it would be free rather than freight shipping. We went Havelock Wool too! Great choice!

    I believe you made a good choice on the wool. I used it as well in my build. I suggest you attach the wool to the ceiling panels (not sure what you are doing for a ceiling) and install with the ceiling. Worked well for me. Trying to attach the wool to the van was not working.

    We've been watching your wonderful new (and old) videos, and were very curious as to which swivel seats you would recommend as we'll be starting our first van build soon! P.S. maybe we'll eventually see you on the road, some of my best friends live in GA!

      Hi Justin! Congrats on your upcoming van! We'd love to meet up one day either in GA or on the road somewhere. :) The swivel seat we used last time worked, but it wasn't as easy to turn as others on the market (or so we've heard). Some of our friends have this one in their van and it works GREAT! At least it did when we saw their van in person. Only problem is you'll need the USA model (which I'm linking to) but most places are sold out at the moment. Hope this helps and good luck! :) www.eurocampers.com/2019--on-Sprinter-Scopema-Brand-Front-Passenger-Seat-Swivel-Adapter--Not-for-suspension-seats_p_3788.html

    I saw your video where you shared your blueprint for this van, which I'm super excited to see. I know you haven't really travelled in the 144 yet, but do you think it will make a big difference in how portable your van feels? My boyfriend and I are planning an epic trip to see all 50 states in one year (and about 120 cities and most of the National Parks). Anyway, we're planning to build out a van that we'll live in. Just curious.

    When you but the insulation on the floor, is there any framing or is it just laid over the metal? You fast forward on that part so I couldn't tell. That seems way easier then some of the elaborate framing I see some folks build. I love simple solutions.

  • @fafnorcal
    @fafnorcal 4 роки тому

    As long as the material is not heat conductive and does not support convection, the R-value of insulation does not depend on the material itself but does depend on the thickness of the insulating layer. Steel wool would be heat conductive (as are the steel rails in the van walls. Material with lots of open air space would support convection. Given that you pack the voids carefully with the sheep's wool, install it in a way that it does not sag once the walls are on, and make the insulating layer as thick as it would be with spray foam, there is no reason why the R-value should be any different from that of foam insulation. I grant that it is easier to get into all the nooks and crannies with spray foam but as you noted, it is also easy to get that foam in places you do not want it. The interior of a van is a small volume. It does not take much out-gassing from artificial substances to create air that's bad for you. No worries with wool. You made the right choice!

  • @Greg-tj8rg
    @Greg-tj8rg 4 роки тому

    Love how the wool is sustainable and biodegradable. Foam is not so hot for the environment. Though I probably will use foam board for most of my insulation and some light weight cabinetry

    We love our havelock wool. We are still on the fence about whether or not we will keep our AC installed. We think it would be more efficient to have two MAX air fans installed. We literally have used the AC unit three times in a year and once was just to test how beneficial it actually is. For our unit we have to have a generator running or be plugged in to operate it so we just prefer not to use it since we spend so much time off grid. Maybe our opinion will change when we head south which is why we haven’t pulled it out yet. Good decision on the havelock we had no issues with it over the long winter up here and even removed the panels in the spring to ensure there was no mold or condensation trapped inside. Worked perfect.

    Hi Chris and Sara, my partner Melissa and I find your videos incredibly helpful. We just bought a 2016 Ford transit 350, 148" wheelbase, medium roof. Do you have any thoughts on how many bags of havealock wool insulation to buy?I don't want to have to skimp towards the end like I saw that you did. We'd rather have a little too much then a little too little. Thank you so much for creating these videos! We find you both so inspiring and look so forward to your next videos. Much gratitude. • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  4 роки тому

      Hi Kate and Melissa! After finishing our insulation I can say that I think what Havelock recommends per van is enough. I was worried we'd be a bit short, but it turned out to be the perfect amount. You don't want to pack the wool too tightly in the walls but rather leave it a little loose and natural because it insulates best when it's not packed flat. Here's the link on their site: havelockwool.com/van-insulation-products/
      It looks like they recommend 3 bags of wool for your size of van, but if you want to be double safe and save on shipping in case you end up needing more, you could always buy 4 bags and save yourself from having to pay shipping again.We might have needed a 4th bag too if we hadn't put so many windows in our van (which kept us from needing more insulation). Hope this helps!! :) Don't hesitate to reach out via email (hello@letsbe.us) if you have any questions. We're typically a bit faster answering that way since comments sort of get lost in the shuffle sometimes. :)

    Loving the new build so far! Just started on our 2020 170 4x4 and using lots of your videos as guidance. Out of curiosity, Havelock Wool's installation guide says to use furring strips on the floor. Why did y'all decide not to use them? Does it feel squishy or bouncy? We're super torn on how to insulate our floor... So many ways :/

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Manny! We actually decided to not add furring strips on the ground this time around because truthfully, we never liked our furring strips on the floor in our first van. We started by using them to harness stuff on the floor during the build but it didn’t feel near as steady as basing things off the walls so we ended up changing everything to be harnessed to the walls instead of the floor. This time around we’re using plusnuts to avoid drilling into the metal and the weight capacity of the plusnuts will allow for much more solid installation of components than even screw or furring strips would allow for.
      I hope that makes sense! The most difficult thing about building a van is the seemingly incite ways to do it. Everyone does something a little different for their own reasons so just think through what would work best for your build and lifestyle. Happy to help bounce ideas with you if we can! ☺️

      @Chris and Sara Hello! 👋🏼 It's 2 years later, but still hoping you'll see this anyway. After this about of time, how do you feel about your decision to lay the wool w/o furring strips and then the factory floor on top? I'm leaning towards going this way, but not sure of the overall value of the furring strips. Like you I'd like to adhere my build to the walls, so I'm not sure if there's any other valuable reason to put them on the floor. Thanks in advance.

    AdvancedRV has a great video on spray foam - their concern: buckling wall metal.
    Insulating prior to cutting metal for windows? Might want to watch those metal shavings; don’t want them stuck in the wool.
    Keep up the good work; it’s a big job!

    • @chrisandsara
      @chrisandsara  4 роки тому +1

      Yes! Buckling is a real concern when using spray foam in a van. Thank you for bringing that up! We've mentioned that in previous videos but forgot to talk about that here. We hired a pro for our spray foam last time because we were so worried about buckling. It did dent some, but not near as bad as some other vans we've seen.
      And thanks for mentioning the metal shavings getting in/on the insulation while installing windows, we hadn't thought about that yet! We'll definitely either remove the insulation under the windows while their cutting or cover it up, so thanks for bringing that to our attention!

    • @nhudoan2807

      Carey Jacobs the Fresair Ac is not good in humid weather and it also requires needs water to work. So it’s like a swamp Ac. And yes the ac Fresair is only 12 volt but if you want the ac to actually work then get a different one. Also depends what weather you in. If it’s humid the Fresair will not work well.

    The wool is a poor insulation, it gets damp due to the condensation in the van . When this happens it sags and compresses and so looses most of its insulating property

    • @erickfadness4427
