Re Ribble, My dad gave me some good advice when I started my working life (1978!!) “ be nice to people on the way up , as you’re bound to meet them on the way down” worked out for me.

What I love about your videos is how you cycle purely for the pleasure of cycling. Whenever you talk about product choices, gear choices, ride choices, bike choices, kit choices, they’re always practical to make your cycling more pleasurable. There are few UA-camrs with your reach who advise cyclists in that way. Please keep it up.

Good on you Katie, inspirational as ever. I was a rock climber for over 50 years but feel that I have now hung up my rock boots. Now have an ebike which I thoroughly enjoy, it takes me to wonderful places I would have loved in my 30s, 40s and 50s but never went because there was not a crag at the end……no regrets and I can look back on the wonderful places climbing took me over the years……now, where am I going this year?😊

I completely get the hobby into a business and removing the fun of the hobby. Did similar and turned a hobby into a business, ended up with no time for the hobby and a business that removed some enjoyment of my hobby. Always make time for you to enjoy the hobby in your own private time and don’t feel pressured to share everything.👍

Difficult questions! Yikes Katie are you sure you want these? Ok, hold on to your hat: 1/ If you hadn’t found cycling, what do you think your life would have looked like now. 2/ If you stopped cycling now. Would you fall victim to an eating disorder? [from personal experience I see eating disorders akin to all types of addiction and believe self control and self discipline is needed for a life time to keep them under control, so I’d be very interested in your perspective.] 3/ Do you see yourself ever buying a house and becoming Katie the sheep, chicken and kitten kookaburra cyclist and animal rescuer? 4/ Do you ever feel that your intellect or creative energies are enslaved by your exercise desires, or that different drivers within you battle to find the time to all express themselves?❤ Take care, really hope you go and do the lambing.Jools.x

    I do love a Q&A so I’ll add some nosey questions…
    * Do you have any plans for your Patreon?
    * What’s are some of the weirdest questions/requests/propositions you get on social media?
    * What’s the best thing you’ve ever been gifted?
    * Can we expect to see you riding another Yorkshire Audax this year?
    * I don’t think it’s possible but can you think of an animal that makes a better noise than a duck?
    * How are Greg and Richard?
    * Is it weird riding with a new person and filming? Is it awkward asking to film them or filming around them?

Okay I got three questions so you will do a part 2. An easy one, medium one and a hard one.
    1. (easy) What’s your favorite Star Wars movie?
    2. (medium) If you had to give up being a cycling content creator , what would you want to do?
    3. (hard) With all the talk of the cycling industry having issues of sales and revenues. Do you think content creators will have to adapt and how?

Love this piece, Katie. Thank you for sharing yourself and insights. I’m a big, heavy cyclist and will never physically be light enough (given my frame) to ride the peloton with most cyclists who are, on average, 100 lb lighter-especially when it comes to climbing. So I adopted early and eventually embraced the philosophy that you « ride your own ride » and feel good about it, be in the the moment, and get out with people who care more about sharing that time with you than being the fastest. They’re surprisingly easy to find👍👍

  • @Francesco_M.

Surely that wasn't me! I would have never said to you "what's next?!?" right after having battled an absolute monster like APN; my own suggestion has always been to take the extra rest just because when you are drained you feel like the whole wide world weighs heavy on you whereas when you are well restored you feel vigorous, nimble and so ready to go.
Take it at your own pace, relieve any pressure that might have mounted up over time; we'd still be here ready to support you, even after long stretches off! 😊
Then I will say that it is unfortunate that you and Ribble parted ways as the endurance SL seemed just the perfect fit for you, two little birds taking off together!!
But then, all the god things come to an end, though they remain forever entrenched in our hearts.
    Delicate question for you :
    • What's your general stance on living alone as opposed to being in a relationship?
I'm only asking this because in my lifetime I've witnessed one too many friends or relatives being involved in the craziest, most oppressive relationship dynamics which prevented them from living the life they've always wanted to live or exploring their full potential, sometimes even expressing themselves was denied.
Do you think being in a couple always comes at a grave cost?
Since you're a trusted voice we all realish to listen to I thought that your say on this could benefit people that might find themselves embroiled in such situations.
Thank you far in advance Katie,
    Thank you for being here with us;
Thank you for being you! =]

I’m a fat cyclist, 198lbs, i’ve lost almost 55 lbs and kept it off , still losing but i often get people who laugh when they find out i’m a cyclist. I find it pathetic because these same people are couch potatos but…… it does sometime affect me a bit.

In your journey to become more fit & lose weight you will find many fools along the way that will try to shame you into not riding at all. Those weak people believe that they can get a bit of power by putting you down & hurting your feelings. They also tend to be the loudest ones so you may think they are the majority out there. Rest assured that there are some amazing riders out there that will support you & have been where you are, they just kept pedaling until they got to their destination. Find a club that doesn't judge the way you look or the bike that you ride. One Love Jenny!

The secret to clipping in on any terrain is don't look down!
You pedal thousands of revolutions every time you ride and your feet know instinctively where to go. Just let them go there. Don't force it, just pedal naturally and your feet will find the pedals.

I’ve never ridden against the clock, except in the odd sportive to meet the cut off time, never been interested in a power meter etc. I just ride my bike to enjoy being out in the fresh air and countryside, combined with a bit of bird watching drinking coffee and eating cake what more do you need for good day out?

The obsession comes from the "sheep mentality". They follow whatever the trend is without asking if the trend makes any sense. This push for speed / having the lightest bike comes from the manufacturers (who make more profit off of carbon fiber wonder bikes) & the media that gets advertising dollars from those same manufacturers. Are we suppose to be fake wanna-be racers or people that know the joy of bike riding?

The problem now not just with cycling but basically any sort of out door pursuit and many other things in life...its about having the best gear and not the actual discipline itself, to the point its becoming available for people who can afford it which inturn turns those people into superior snobs...ive rode bicycles for 40 years and now more so than ever have turned away from this whole racing club scene where this attitude appears to be promoted more so than ever....The Touring independent cycling personally for me is this most all encompassing, friendly and the best promoter of what cycling is ultimately about "ENJOYMENT"....

Lol on the clipping in while facing uphill. I've had a hand full of near fall overs. The first leg you clip in with has to be strong enough to do pretty much a full revolution while you try to clip in the other foot. I just can't get enough forward momentum to do it. I know sooner clip in and I'm almost rolling backwards. Pros are much lighter and that helps a lot.

Katie, i don't think anyone for one second doubts your integrity on brand or recommending a product, you do not come across ever as someone that would sell their sole for a few quid. Plus your Northern so enough said, we tend to be that way.
I think wih Bikes its such a personal thing, the feel of it (yes with the correct fit) is such a personal thing and getting one that inspires confidence is again something else too. What's the old saying you have to kiss a few frogs to find a prince lol, i think its the same. Never even considered you being tied down to Ribble in your earlier blogs, great bike (one of my bikes is a ribble) but yea bit sad you were tied commercially as way better to try a few prior to settling for each style of riding. I have an s works, but in all honestly my favorite bike is still a Cannondale (that was actually cheaper), as i said i think it's a very personal thing as one of my mates borrowed it and preferred his Trek.
Fitness - i think anyone trying to keep at peak fitness, or always chasing better times on rides constantly is actually doing damage to their body long term. For me i find it way better to treat fitness like a sine wave and aim for 2 peaks a year's or one if injured etc (generally geared around long remote bikepacking trips), with periods of tickover (and solid recovery) before winding up again. By doing this i find my peak outputs and endurance are better than being "100% fit" all year, also suffer way less bugs and cold's. Since i adopted this approach and accepted i have slower parts of the year and accept it for being with a plan then i've never felt better. It also allow's me to enjoy the off season alot more without guilt tripping over the data afterwards! Also i think people focus on cadio when trying to get fit and totally miss out on weight training, a vital component for any sport pretty much and missed by alot people only interested in cycling.
Spot on if your not doing it for the fun, what's the point :-) I think the best time's are when on a ride when suddenly you get that feeling of being so in the moment, not thinking shit what was my time up that segment! Also i note you love your zwift (who doesn't on a windy rainy day) but this winter i've been enjoying Rouvy alot more, just wondering on your thought's on it? I have my pain cave with a large tv on the wall right infront of the bars and must say be able to ride course's done in the real world, or one's that i aspire to i have found more engaging recently (as in riding for the views and not the time). But yea just curious on your thoughts on alternatives to Zwift, possibly one to cover in part 2?

You are a wonderful, well-rounded person. Only one addition about getting married, to which you also have a great perspective. You will want to get married when you feel and know it. Until then, I will wait for you! (hahahaha)

Talking about recording your ride, have you ever considered trying the DJI Osmo Pocket 3? Very small video camera with mechanical gimbal, very easy to record. With 1 inch sensor and 20mm equivalent angle, it can record very good quality video. I want to know what your opinion is about it on recording cycling videos.

I’d be interested to know how getting paid from this works (I understand UA-cam partnership part) Maybe not all your income numbers etc I wouldn’t share my own salary, but what comes from YT, what comes from sponsorships, how long it took to build and the work you had to put in to build this up to a business.

Like you said, there's always someone faster than you. I used to be pretty fast and as I aged I just can't go that fast anymore, no matter how hard I try. So, in the end it doesn't matter because you'll end up slow again. 😆

My awkward question would be whether you have any qualms with flying or driving to go for a ride? I've come to realise I'm seemingly in the minority here, but I like using my bike to avoid taking a car - but I've had guys on the group rides saying I should do xyz ride abroad, but it doesn't sit well with me personally.

I'm a bloke with long hair past my shoulders, I'd like to know how to tie hair for wearing a helmet or any hacks to just keep it out the way. At the moment I just make a pony tail but lower down the rear of my head so it doesn't get in the way of adjustment dial. Apart from that I love winter because I can wear a balaclava and keep it all inside that. Any easy ways to tie it for a helmet? I've tried doing plaits I see a lot of women doing but I cannot for the life of me do that behind my own head it's too complex! 😂

Difficult question: when you did the interview with Bradley Wiggins, that clearly at some god-awful corporate gig (my words) and it put me right off your channel at that time because I thought it was a spectacle and that, at the time, it seems like ‘selling out’. Are you uncomfortable about that? Did it seem awkward at the time (apart from meeting SBW which of course is a big deal to a cyclist)? Was I wrong about what I thought?

Difficult question: is it fair for online influencers (devoting themselves fulltime to their particular niche - say like someone with a cycling channel with all the latest shiny gear), to promote their high standards to the average man/woman in the street? Isn't this always going to end with the audience feeling they're somehow substandard, as they'll never attain the high bar that's been set?

  • @1carusjohn32
    @1carusjohn32 9 місяців тому

Nice vid about you Katie. Better to say nowt if you have nothing to say than turn out stuff that becomes drivel. Never force it and just stay true to yourself in what you want to do and your good and bad experiences of rides, products and kit. You have probably helped thousands of people (121k subs) have the confidence to get on a bike and ride it, either new to cycling or finding it again after maybe not riding since being much younger. Many influencers focus on performance only, nothing wrong with that... helping people get better... but getting people on a bike at all levels and showing how enriching it can be - health, well being , fun etc...is probably worth way more. Statistically, you have probably made a difference to more peoples' lives than you can contemplate. It should not be a burden , worry or responsibility, but I think it is an inevitable consequence of the material that you have provided over the years.

Hi Katie, Id never ask this question if you werent so seriously asking us to put difficult questions to you so here goes. Ive often wondered if you might live with ADHD or Autism. I know plenty of truly gifted and wonderful adults who do but also conversely have real mental health challenges...its known that women and girls mask it better than boys/men. I work with a team in a hospital around this vital subject helping autistic/neurodiverse patients get a better hospital experience. Please dont be insulted if Ive got this wrong.....I really value you and your content😊.
