@wandawells I think it’s crazy jus to see Philly in old footage and it’s crazier cause ths is my neighborhood and I jus seen my uncle sitting at the table 😂 good ol days
House of Umoja!!! Wow.... that takes me all the way back to childhood hearing about youth being housed there. It was a staple of West Philly, right in the territory of one of the Moon Gang. Chaka Fattah's mother ran it when he was a teen and he went on to become a powerful State Representative.
Philly was moving in a real positive direction during this time in the early 80s. A few years later from this, crack hit the scene and f*cked everything up.
I'm from the Philly Gang era and it started to turn around in 1975, I remember going into the Army in 1974 and when I came home in 1976 The gangs didn't exist.
They were there. It just probably didn't affect by that time. Go to Daily News Archives and lookup Gang War '76. It was in early January that 3 teens were stabbed up in front of a Bodega and one died at the hands of Logan, alongside Camac & Butler Streets. One of them was my older brother. As more African Americans and Puerto Ricans moved up into those areas in early 70's ( Just the way they've been moving into Lower Northeast in recent years) new gangs started to form. Nicetown had Lowland, Top Side, East Side & West Side. Hunting Park had 8th St Crusaders and Pike St, 5th St, Tiber St. ( All Puerto Rican cliques) it was popping back then.
Yo bro I said keep em coming but ths one hit very different simply bcause ths is my hood in real life Frazier st is a half a block away frm me and we over here dyin laughing bcause the guy at the table wit the toothpick and glasses is my uncle i knw Ms Fattah and her sons David and Chaka Fattah ths one really hit home keep doing ur thing

Yes Philly had gangs in the 70's and it doesn't get talked about, along with NYC, LA, Chicago, Detroit. From the archives I read Philly had the most gang violence and the most gang related killings. They had a gang called "Zulu Nation" which started in the 60's and was unrelated to the Zulu Nation in the Bronx/NYC
I was born in southwest Philly in 81. When I came along there were no gangs BUT the street cartels took over in when the crack era started. Especially when the JBM and Shower Possy went to war. So It may have been calm in 81 when I was born but it got crazy by 87,89, 91 when I was in elementary school.
Oh, when al the Jamaicans started moving in to west Philadelphia and some in Yeadon at that time, many were rastafarians but it was in the drug game, i remember that because around 1983/ i being to hear reggae music in the neighborhood [Barrington Levy] which to this day always preferred Carribean men, food and music them Jamaicans was all over even in Germantown back then those were crazy times
We was warring in '81 -'85. Woodland Ave had a damn army. Also their allies were 72nd & Paschall Projects , and 58th & Greenway. They used to war against 54th & Elmewood, " The Vill" ( Bartram Village Projects) 54th St Mob from Warrington Ave & 54th also known as 5-4 Ghetto and their allies Cedar Avenue from 56th & Cedar, and you also had 49th & Baltimore, 5-7 Zip Gang from Willows Ave, and their allies 56th & Baltimore and too many others to name. Going to and from school was an adventure. lol.. You had to be in something or closely affiliated with them. Or either be an athlete to get neighborhood passes.
@@billyjacc yeah I remember some of that when I was a kid. We lived off 55 near hadfield and Malcolm st. We played on our block. Didn’t do a whole love of traveling lol. Once I moved up limbergh blvd in the early 90s it calmed down a bit but it was still rough. Especially at Pepper middle school where the larchwood project kids went. We was wild in there.

My friends feared the West Oak Lane / East GTown gangs. Couldn't play a little league baseball game without being threaten to be shot. The Ville was the most feared.

Nah.., her and her husband are deceased and her son former United States Representative Chaka Fattah is serving a 10 year sentence for bribery and his son Chaka Fattah Jr. was recently released after 4 years on a 5 year sentence in the Feds for corruption. He's married to Rene Chennault Fattah formerly of NBC 10 Philadelphia. I don't see them being in any position to duplicate what their family did back in the late 60's through 80's. Not impossible, but I don't see it.
