Smiths RVI Tachometer repair overview

Smiths RVI Tachometer repair info.
Calibrated in the car using optical tach on engine pulley and the tach potentiometer adjusted accordingly - access gained by drilled hole in tech body.

What was it doing what it wasnt working? Mine is spiking to 7000 as soon as the ignition is on (car not started) and stays there with the engine running.
