talking about being schizophrenic or even being transgender is not courage.
keyboard warriors online talking and starting fights, is that courage. online talking about anything is the same thing

I am age 45 in March and I have had it most of my life that I do not ‘look’ like someone with schizoaffective disorder! I have a university degree, have been happily married to my husband for over 12 years now, own my own home and have always had a job. When I have an episode of psychosis however only then might I look like someone with the illness. The thing is ‘We’ are not our illness. Thank you for these videos which are so helpful and useful. Love you Lauren 💕💕💕

When I met my now husband and he shared his diagnosis with me I wanted to find others whose partners have schizophrenia/schizoaffective. It was hard to find any, even through organization like nami. Someone took me aside and explained that there are 2 types of people who suffer from schizophrenia - those that can’t hide their illness and those who can. It is unlikely you will ever meet someone who can. Because they are hiding in plain sight. I was open about his illness and regretted it and had to pull it all back, it hurt me professionally. Since then more people in the limelight have come out about their mental illness and I have hope things will change. The younger generations don’t seem so hung up on it. There is a great book, my lovely wife in the psych ward, which I highly recommend. Your courage is amazing and so right time right place with you academic background. You are fantastic and I believe you will help many people.

Once again I marvel at your ability to be so helpful, concise and analytical in the advice you give. I think it is ironic that a person who suffers from a fairly severe mental illness can be so good at this - probably just my ignorance. Well done and keep up the great work. I have learnt a lot from you. I have just finished watching "Spinning Out" on Netflix. A TV drama series looking at the impact of bi-polar disorder on a young skater. Good to see more focus on mental disorder by mainstream media.

I Think that “you’re having an episode“ versus using the word delusional is a better option. Frankly it may be delusional but it’s very real to the person going through it. I use the word episode when I see something off with my daughter and she seems to accept that well.
Secondly, I know a lady in the publishing business that does a great Q&A on Fridays for authors and what she has them do is submit their questions prior to her going live and recording a video. It makes the whole program flow much better and she can work through the questions. That would also be good for your channel on Instagram and people would know what questions they would be looking at or you could create a separate email just for questions to come to you.

If a "normal person" freaks out about something, are they considered delusional? Shakespeare said; "There is nothing wrong nor right. Only thinking makes it so…". As tough as this condition can be, it IS our perception of how things are.💕🎶🐱‍👤

I opted for oral delivery for my neuroleptics too, right away, when I was given a choice. It gives power back to me. I don't feel powerless, if there are horrible side-effects (a chemical torture). I know they will stop if I stop taking the neuroleptic. The fact I'm able to not take the medicine (I do, though!) grows positively in this aspect. My mental health greatly improved since I switched to oral medication. It gives power back to me.🍄🌸🌈👩🏻‍🦰💊🦄

Here's wishing you well. I am a former mental health patient. I was treated for excessive anxiety at age 14. I think it was about a late onset puberty together with unrealistic athletic expectations on the part of coaches at the time. The psychiatrist was a committed Freudian who asked me loads of questions about sex that I could not answer because at that point I didn't know much about sex. He got me released from PE requirements over the objections of school officials and prescribed medications that allowed me to relax and get through puberty. He also told my parents to tell me some facts about sex because the back of the bleachers curriculum wasn't making it to me. I have lived a perfect life ever since. (Not really.) Hang in there and best wishes.

Damn, I missed this as I live in the UK and it's broadcast late in the night.
Thank you so much Lauren, it was so helpful.
I wonder if you could do a follow up video after the 'live' ones just answering some of the questions that were posted, because I appreciate how hard it must be to read, and reply making sense when so many questions are being thrown at you so quickly, but I feel there were some really good questions that got missed and wondered if you might answer them in another video afterwards.
I also agree with you that it might be better to have a 'topic' for these Q&A's as the questions were rather random at times and having a topic would help to keep it more focussed and also for people to watch at a later date.
You and Rob are amazing. You are really making a difference in helping us all understand more and how to help our loved ones. Keep up the good work.

Also, it's easy to get bogged down with labels and medical jargon, you are not an illness, don't lose your identity to a itits or affect, or disorder... you are a unique person with a chemical imbalance of the brain, but you are also YOU. Don't forget you are you, not a diagnosis. Having thoughts and emotions however irrational or illogical are not symptoms of being sick. I use to think in this way, and it's also unhealthy to think of intangible thoughts and emotions as a symptom of a disease. We are all human no matter what difference we have physically or mentally, your thoughts and emotions are valid no matter how disordered they are. You are amazing and unique. Don't place your uniquness in a testing tube. Yes take your medicine, but don't become a textbook description of a condition. Reacquaint yourself with the world around you and CREATE a new identity beyond a diagnosis, as a fellow UA-camr who also has schizoaffective disorder, I know the pressure of explaining and excusing behavior as a symptom. I'm almost 40, but had I created a channel about schizoaffective disorder, I'd not have been seen as who I am absent of the label and typecast description of a series of similar symptoms, instead of who I am. BUT NOW, you have a different perspective of me once I typed and revealed my diagnosis, but did you know that I am also a writer. I am also a musician, a cook, a poet, a brother, a democrat, a Christian, a volunteer, a spn, an uncle, a public speaker, I am the sum of all my parts, BUT... I am not an illness. For your peace and happiness, don't become yours. 🤗😄❤️

I so appreciate how you mentioned hypomania! I couldn't remember what it was called; I get these really weird episodes where I say very strange, sometimes inappropriate things without fully realizing what I'm saying, and I'll feel really uncomfortably hyper as if I've just inhaled a whole bag of sugar. But I certainly can't say if I've ever experienced full-blown mania. Having the correct names for these things are very important to me.

One word re lactation: bromocriptine. Not only does it stop the lactation/lower your prolactin, but it totally smooths out the mood issues in many cases including when any PMS is involved. This could be a Godsend for stabilizing your mood if you have even mildly elevated prolactin. Most people feel their best when their prolactin is close or at zero. Mention it to your Psychiatrist. Many Psychiatrists prescribe it, 5mg per day

A good topic for a future Q&A would be different meds and peoples experiences of them.
I know you do not want to say what drugs you are currently on, but I think it would be helpful if you and subscribers could talk about your experiences of different medications in a general way, both good and bad, as there are so many different drugs out there it is so hard to know which ones to agree to or to try.
A general discussion about them would be educational.

I'm on my sixth year waiting for a diagnosis. I'm on 14 different prescription meds. Before I was on the meds I had terrible cognitive dysfunction, I still do, it goes through stages where it gets really bad. I don't like to be around other people as I can't keep up with them, it was the same in my school days. I was in the lowest level of class, they used to call it Remidial class. I was self harming at 5 years old by cutting my arms with my dad's razor. I tried to commit suicide at boarding school, I was 6.
I had a twenty years heroin addiction, and eventually I was on methadone for 21 years.
I've never had a steady girlfriend longer than a few months, I've never even had a valantine card, I have no children, I've lived alone at my home for over 17 years. I am obsessed with the occult. I think I'm possessed or have a demonic attachment. I've been slapped, messed with sexualy repeatedly for a couple of years. Just a couple of nights ago I was strangled, my legs upon waking were almost fully hoisted straight up.
I wrote a lot here because I don't speak to anyone, and so I'm getting things off my chest, not that I will even get a reply.
Your videos are excellent, and if I haven't got schizophrenia I still thank you for your kind help. Your video on cognitive problems was bang on. x

Hello Lauren! New sub here. You’re better looking and more stable than the president of the United States. Have you considered politics after you become a UA-cam ⭐️ Or you could do both. I have known schizophrenia and bipolarism. Is that a word? It is now. My wife was bipolar and a mensa. My best male friend is schizophrenic. But he stopped talking to me recently over trump’s conspiracy theories. I wouldn’t listen. My wife passed away after a sixteen year battle with multiple sclerosis. She had a tough life. Fascinating subject mental health. Science does not know what a thought is made of. How they’re processed or how they’re stored. So understanding rogue thoughts like voices is still a total mystery. I have tinnitus. That’s where I hear noises that don’t exist. Van Gogh cut his ear off to stop his tinnitus. Didn’t work. Good luck to you Lauren. Greetings from New Jersey USA 🇺🇸 ~Bomba

It must require a lot of courage to live with something like this. I hope this message could be useful to some. In one of your videos you mentioned the relief of being labeled and diagnosed. I think this is quite important, however, the label could be much gentler too. In the primitive cultures, the label for schizophrenia is spiritual awakening. It implies the torment and agony caused by the spirits wrestling with you and within you. You will be guided to meditate and contemplate on the voices and the affected moods you get. You get used to the images and the voices and learn to distinguish "reality" from delusions.
Finally, you will manage your life better and appreciate what you have. You may develop abilities to heal others and very deep understanding of life and its many realities.
In the conventional viewpoint, a significant part of the problem is the label itself and you putting yourself down because you do not conform to the norm. Other cultures do not see it this way, learn from their ways and fortify your life...

The one thing that I have noticed because of my illness and the constant misunderstood communication between neurotypicals and people who suffer from psychotic conditions, is that you cannot force neurotypical thinking on to somebody experiencing a psychotic condition. The more you try to force neurotypical thinking the more problems you're causing. Understanding should be the goal not forcing somebody to understand something somebody else's terms. Just like the so-called delusion that your meds are a form of mind control and poison, because I believe they are that's what they are supposed to do and because they are chemicals they are poison and do damage to the brain and body. understanding that as a fact is perfectly understandable, but when they try to tell you no they are not their medicine that contradicts everything you believe just because they want you to think one way instead of working with you to help you understand the actuality of things. neurotypicals tend to believe that only one thing can be true at a time. People with schizophrenia can understand multiple truths at the same time oh, because we see things other people automatically dismiss in the bigger picture. I believe that is our superpower. it only makes us crazy because neurotypicals can't understand and try to force us to their way of thinking.

Omg, you must really trust your partner not to manipulate with you for getting his right in arguments regarding relationship challenges. Even in relationships without struggles of mental illness things get difficult. He must be a real good overall person not to taking advantage of you. And of course respect to your curage. This is in same why pure deep surrender to someone. Hope I didn't offend anyone with my assumptions. Wish I could trust someone so much.

I also endure schizo-affective disorder, coupled with bipolar depressive type. Every day is a Struggle, emotional growth spurt and sometimes it just feels quite proper. To those that don't understand I'm simply considered eccentric but it is a real struggle. Thanks for sharing.

@Pretzel Boggins I've been on both of these injections, and they work in a similar way for me...I guess the Invega works better, but it's just horrible for my body after awhile. It's hard to maintain a healthy body when it makes you feel hungry and tired all the time. Wish there was something newer that worked for people with schizoaffective disorder.

Hi Lauren, there were two things you said yesterday that I didn't quite agree with based on my experience with recovery after a life time of mental illness. I have the same illness as you and I am now 60 years old.
You seemed to not like the idea that there are higher and lower functioning people with this disorder. That's ok but I think it's more like treated and untreated and at the same time the degree of psychological problems that anyone can have.
Related to that is simply how brains work meaning how reality is processed by them. I think the brain has evolved from the inside and added outer layers to deal with more complex things. Mental illness in my case seemed to involve a slow degeneration of these abilities.
I believe degeneration of reality is directly related to the nature of reality itself since the brain has evolved to comprehend that reality.
