    I think it's really a black women's problem, because I'm white and in my community we are all jealous of your beautiful natural hair. You have so much more volume, your hairstyles are extraordinary, our hair is flatter and our hairstyles are often a little poor... stay natural, you are beautiful as nature made you.

    Girl, my hair is free-flowing. I let my hair be and do what it likes, and I never do my edges. I am a professional woman, and I see my hair just as presentable now that I am natural as when I had a relaxer. This is not a perfect world, and there is nothing perfect in it, so why would I try to be perfect? It's just ridiculous. I believe in embracing myself and my hair in its natural state, with no add-ons. My children are as well, and I am loving it.

      There is no need to have gel in edge to have « perfect » edge. It seems that it depends of your education. Edge with or without gel seem good to me…

    It's funny because I just got done watch a bio on Simon Biles and they were talking about how she and other black olympians were criticized about their hair/edges not being slicked down. I thought to myself that's crazy.
    I do like my hair to be in unison. But my edges/kitchens do their own thing. I pretty much wear a stretchy handbands or scarfs a lot. Sometimes I might use my wax stick or control paste or grease for them but there is no way I would flat iron my edges everyday!
    I agree with you, there is beauty in imperfection!

    I have cut, shaved, and revived my hair so many times I can’t even count. At 33, I fell ill and my medication took a toll on my hair. I had to wear wigs. In the past year I’ve seen the most growth since I was a kid. I recently started a new medication and see the decline again. I’m done! I love my hair. I’m grateful for my hair, and I’m no longer obsessed with it. I’ll take care of it and that is all. ❤

    Great topic!! I have never bothered with edge control….ever. It;s not a new phenomenon. It was a “thing” when I was a teenager and I’m nearly 69 yrs old. It never looked ‘natural; to me so I never bothered with it. My hair does not grow flat onto my face…so why pretend and I had relaxers back then!!!!! I have been natural for nearly 3 yrs. I blew my hair out for the 1st time last week. I used my Tymo on 80 degrees (basically air dried with the comb attachment). Wow….Did I get a SURPRISE!! My hair is WELL BELOW bra strap…In fact, IT’S JUST ABOVE WAIST LENGTH!! 😮 WHO KNEW??!!?? My hair has always been thick but after using Aryuvedic herbs/teas/masks on my natural hair for nearly a year, my strands are THICK, SHINY AND HEALTHY!! No split ends!!! It was so thick and so long….I realized I wasn’t ready to handle it!! Seriously!! I took a couple of pictures and IMMEDIATELY put it back into my Beloved TWISTS!!! 😂 Just saying…..Long and thick isn’t all that. Being willing to deal with it is the key. I prefer twists and head wraps!! I take my twists out once every 7 days for 24 hours (to make my hubby happy….He LOVES My Wash-n-Go’s…..then it’s time for Prepoo and my all day wash day routine!! 🥰🤣 In short - That edges thing and unnaturally (gel laden) slicked back hair is a cultural “look” that just doesn’t speak to me. 🙂

    Love this vid. Crazy how the same people who say they like a “natural woman” are likely the same ones who ridicule us when our hair is not up to the standard. The whole reason for the start of the natural hair movement was for us to love our hair as it grows from our scalp and I think a lot of the community has loss sight of that. Hopefully we can get back to it. Our hair is beautiful just the way it is

    Mya, you're so right. Thank you for talking to the younger ladies and giving them the confidence and courage to start wearing their hair naturally. I grew up in the 70s where afros were the in thing and press and curls with the hot comb and marcell curling irons. Then, the 80s the geri curl phase. Stuck with that until the 2000s, then came naturally curly phase. That lasted two years. When I went back to the geri curl because it was easier to take care of but not many hair stylists were familiar with how to put the product in. So I let my naturally curly 4c hair grow out again. And stuck to corn row styles. Then my hair dresser retired. Continued to cornrow myself, my hair continously got stronger and thicker and longer and harder to put in cornrows myself. Then I found you on UA-cam and your hair texture is very much like mine and a lot longer. I love the chebe grease I have started using. I am experiencing less breakage when twisting and braiding my hair. Combining, brushing and washing your natural hair regularly is the best thing you can do keep you natural hair healthy and strong. Ladies Mya is a very beautiful hair influencer and she's telling the truth on natural hair care.

    Maya, I definitely believe a quest for slick back styles and neat baby hairs can and will lead to damage. Although these ideas about texturism, 'good hair v. nappy hair', etc begin as little girls..we have to learn to appreciate the uniqueness of each curl. You are truly blessed to have a Mother that celebrated you and taught you to love yourself. Unfortunately a lot of us did not have that and that deep rooted self hatred continues to flourish and project on to others. I’ve known Samoan women with knee-length hair. When they straightened their hair, they preferred to use an iron (on low setting) instead of a straight flat iron, with heat protectant, of course. I think the length and frequency of application matters. Black hair can be fragile.

  • @Discovering_Hope
    @Discovering_Hope 3 місяці тому +2

    It’s always good to hear from you, my lovely Sister. I agree with all that you have said.
    I am 75 years old, dark skinned, 4C haired, African American woman. I am of the “Angela Davis” era. I learned to love my 4C hair long before it was called 4C. At a point, I started wearing a TWA when very few of us wore a TWA. I thought of it as a gift from the Lord because it was easy to care for. I wasn’t trying to impress any man or anyone. I just enjoyed the ease and loveliness of my TWA. No, I am not “ beautiful” by today’s standards, I am average. But I always accepted my hair as a gift from God, with all its kinks and coils. I raised my dark skinned daughter to know that she was beautiful no matter what, and she too wore a TWA. I taught her that the white kids would not understand black beauty and she shouldn’t be bothered by their comments about her skin color, her hair, or any other aspect of herself. So I tried to get her to accept herself. She is now an adult, and has experimented with various hair styles, and I respect her choice to do anything she wants with her hair. But I know I did the best I could trying to get her to know that she is beautiful.
    I wore my TWA for approximate 50 years, and just last year, 2023, I decided to grow my hair. I want to see if I can, and just how long it would get. I have never ever worn wigs, or extensions. At my age, my hairline had begun to recede. Thanks to some trusted black influencers, I am learning how to care for growing 4C hair. My edges are slowly improving, and I am excited to see what results.
    I am happy that, at my age, I don’t care if my edges are “laid”, or what other people think of my hair. I have also lived long enough to see what the black community has done to itself by not supporting all of us. I have seen the texturism, the brown bag effect, and many other things that have detrimentally divided us. It is a shame that we can’t all just love the variety that exists as black people. We get enough harm from non-black society…we shouldn’t be hating on each other.
    I love my black people, and anytime I see someone with a natural while at the supermarket or anywhere, I make it a point to compliment her (or him) and tell them how beautiful her or his braids, natural, or anything is…ALWAYS…no matter the complexion, curl pattern, style or whatever. I tell the young people, old people, and middle aged people how beautiful they are….and it always makes them feel good. They are beautiful because that is how God made them, no matter the edges, curl pattern, the texture…whatever, they are beautiful.

    Hello new to your channel love this video. I’m back to being a loose natural after having locs for 5 years. I’ve been out of touch with the natural hair community, I’m happy these conversations are being had. Having been natural before my locs, you’re absolutely right, there was a time when natural hair was just that…natural hair. it wasn’t expected to be something that it wasn’t. I’ve come accustomed to the convenience, low maintenance and low manipulation of locs. Now that Im a loose natural I’m going to continue with low maintenance and low manipulation styles. Some times my 4b twa doesn’t have defined curls and I’m okay that. It’s a shame certain hair textures in its very natural state, straight wash and go, no manipulation is considered unattractive. Absolutely love this video. Peace and blessings to you.

    Thank you for this content. You are very thoughtful and articulate. And need I mention absolutely beautiful!
    I left a comment on one of your previous videos about the dangers of striving for perfection. What I said was that I thought you cut too much off of the back...
    When I observe women with traditionally long hair, including the African women of Chad, Chinese women, etc. I do not see perfection. I see that their sides and nape may be thinner, shorter, wisps. I see that the hair at the temples and forehead may be broken or thinned out. But the length and beauty of the rest of their hair makes it hard to notice, or not matter.
    Keep striving for what makes you feel good in your own skin, and keep this good content coming.
    Only one suggestion: your videos are kind of long. We want to watch, but we be busy, girl!

    • @KlassicallyKept
      @KlassicallyKept  3 місяці тому

      Hello.
      I understand what you are saying and where you are coming from but the nape area of my hair was actually damaged. My nape area had never been that thin, it only started in 2023 and once I stopped using the elasticated bonnet it thickened right back up. So from the beginning I knew my nape area was eventually going to have to be cut. I show in January of this year talking about my hair goals.
      I am not looking for perfection, I am looking for health.

    This was a nice video. Unfortunately, I have thin, very curly/coily hair, which can be one of the most challenging combos. Everyone wants full, well-defined curls-not the sparse, scalpy look.
    Most creators with my curl pattern feel like a joke. They push popular products, don’t practice what they preach, and keep making the same promises about fixing their hair but continually neglect it. They also recommend styles, like heavy braiding, that look awful on me. I think the max amount of braids I can have is 8, and I still look like I have 3 strands of hair.
    People with hair as thin as mine usually have looser curls, and I rarely see them. They often do wash and gos, but I can’t figure out how to make that work. My hair puffs up from the roots, even when wet, and trying to fix it feels more damaging than helpful. The amount of tools being pushed onto me that I don’t have is frustrating. This area feels more like a marketing trap for a look I probably will never achieve and won’t understand what I am doing wrong. “The fix is always THIS tool!” I still want to learn how to do a wash and go, and understand how to consistently get it to work (also understanding the variables mentioned), since I do like the bottom half of my hair lol…
    I wish I could see a realistic model with hair like mine. It would be amazing to understand how to manage it and style it in a way that’s flattering. I’ve accepted that my hair will never be perfect because I’m not perfect. Finding out what doesn’t work helps me filter what might. If I can do something that makes me feel slightly pretty, that’s close enough to perfect for me.

Yesterday i went to dye my hair a beautiful reddish brown and my hair is quite short at the moment but i can still just about tie it up in the middle or create a nice curl short do. My hair is very soft but the sides recently broke due to this silly woman who braided my hair so I'm leaving it for now. I absolutely agree about striving for perfection and when i left the salon after putting dye and treating it, i just kept the style simple. The hairdresser did ask me if i wanted to put gel in it and i said NO. Gel breaks my hair and why do i need to slick it down anyway🙄

      Hello MJ and thank you.
      I lay may edges because I like the way it compliments my hairstyle. There is no need to lay my edges every single day, too much manipulation. Are you asking do I leave the house without laid edges, I sure do lol !
      Plus I live in the south and the humidity here is very disrespectful and my curly q's just do not care that I want them to lay nice and behave.

    Thank you for doing this video! It is getting ridiculous, unfortunately. Yes there is an agenda to make black women feel inferior about our hair and our looks etc. It's disgusting and yes the black community has a lot of issues with colorism, texturism, featurism. Simon Biles is the most decorated Olympian ever! However balck women and more than likely black men are obsessed with her hair. Looking at Simon Biles, I don't think she is natural. However, she seems to have type 4 hair. Even with a relaxer which it appears she has, her hair with I'm sure sweating from physical activity is not always going to lay flat without a lot of gel and product. I feel like if she was in the 2 or 3 a type hair and laid her edges completely flat, there would be no issues.
    Unfortunately, a lot of black men have negative things to say about black women with type 4 hair. I've heard it and had plenty of black men complemently because of my texture and length. It's getting out of control. I don't like it at all. We must do better.

    Thank you Mya for this much needed reminder! I'm curious, how would you style your hair if you had, let's say, a third of your current density? Lol I love twists but they just don't quite give the same on low density. I've been bunning a lot but now dealing with breakage in the back smh.

    • @KlassicallyKept

      lol good morning!
      I would just style my hair loosely with these same styles. People in the community are telling me twists do not fare well in fine hair.

    Girl yes. It has been a long epidemic I feel. I never was a fan of the edges. If it's small i think it's cute but when it's curling into a circle and all that, Im like why? No one's hair is naturally like that not even the nonblacks lol.
    And it's a bit funny when they've now lost all their edges and then comb and cut out a portion of the next layer of hair to lay it doen like edges. Smh

    Also how often do you wash your hair? I wash my hair every week and I don’t re-moisturize until wash day, so I am just curious with the chebe grease and leave conditioner how long can you go before the grease feeling heavy to where you want snd need to wash it again?

    I don't understand how you can HATE your natural afro hair. You can be frustrated with the combing or detangling of it, that's understandable. But we have KAZMALEJE brush comb on the market that makes it easier.
    I love natural afro hair especially that long afro hair. I do not like hair products at all, not even shampoo or conditioner. *Black women are insane to even think that hair products are the answer to their hair!!! I'm here to tell you that a KAZMALEJE brush comb is the only answer you need. The rest of it is variations of braiding, twisting, cornrowing, flat twisting, pony puffs, or afros. That is more than enough hairstyles for a person. Stop the obsession, ladies.

    • @KlassicallyKept
      @KlassicallyKept  3 місяці тому +2

      Hello Tina!
      Yes ma am , I would start with washing your hair in the shower in a downward motion, do not pile it on top of your head like you see in the commercials lol.
      Also try washing your hair in sections. This will allow you to focus on portion of your hair, put it up, and work on the next section.
      Lastly if your hair is tangling more than usual or you notice your detangling time is taking longer, you may need a trim.

    Mya I am speechless about that comment surrounding your edges… I don’t do much to mine but add a cream. I have also noticed that when I use edge control, if I don’t wet my edges, it will pull my hair out because I will see hair in my hand. Someone suggested using the curl that I had never heard of. Lol she said you have curly hair…🤔you should try this new “ chemical” curl product. Honestly I was highly offended.

    Thanks for this video! First as a kid I always had long enough hair and then you feel like you've been blindsided when you noticed people either calling another texture pretty and yours nappy. Things happened for me to get my first perm my mom was never good at doing hair and the person who did my hair stopped. Jump to later I'm at a family gathering and my adult cousin says to child me your hair isn't like ours because her and few others have looser curls that was a moment that stuck with me and I felt my hair wasn't up to par. Mind you I grew up with a cousin with 4A wavy hair who never said her hair was better. So it was a battle dealing with that. I'm happy I have been natural for years but of course it has its ups and downs. Fast forward to 2024 watching our Olympian win gold with unlaid edges. I'm aware of it being uncomfortable for me and others to see her hair a mess after what was done to us. But I just watched her and smiled and laughed at how much it bothers us even in this situation. Gold medal and unlaid edges 😂 What I didn't know is that it would go so viral after it had already happened to another years ago. I got pissed and kinda want to never lay my edges again and wanted us to all post bushy haired ponytails selfies 😂 anyways thanks for always keeping it so transparent 🤎

      Hello Dominque!
      Your childhood and the comments. I don't think people realize how much words ( especially from people we look up to and/or revere) can shape the mindset of a child and ultimately shape their world view. There are things that were said to me a child that I remember still to this day. But, I am glad that you have found happiness in natural hair.

    While I understand your perspective, everyone has an ideal that they aspire to. As someone with natural hair, I barely want to handle my hair, so when I think about mothers or women who work multiple jobs, it's best to have a protective style that YOU like.
    I think we need to release black women from the standard that you MUST wear your natural texture, and if you don't want to, you hate your hair.
    Some things are just uncomfortable and no one wants to feel less confident because of hair. Everyone is not at the stage where they are comfortable or even know how to style their natural hair.
    Some just want straight hair or loose curls.

    • @KlassicallyKept
      @KlassicallyKept  3 місяці тому +6

      Hello and thank you for your comment, however; it further proves my point. The women who do not feel comfortable with their natural hair were not born like that, it was taught and/or they were socialized like that. Some of it is subconsciously and some is blatant.
      If you have a little girl who grows up seeing her grandmother, mother, and and sister wearing weaves and wigs, or getting relaxers, that is all she will know. No one in the house talks about or tends to natural hair. Not because the mother is trying to harm her daughter but that is what the mother was also taught. So the mother will inadvertently teach her daughter that her natural hair is not good enough and then eventually her daughter will become uncomfortable with her natural hair. The sentiments at home will be echoed to her in the world as well.
      I have never said women who do not wear their natural hair hate their hair. Many women choose different styles that are practical and fit their lifestyles and there is no issue with that. The problem is these are the same women that will shame, ridicule, and laugh at women who choose to wear their natural hair. Weaves, wigs, straight hair, relaxed hair, have become the norm and the acceptable styles for afro-hair but no one is stopping to ask why ?
      Wanting to try something new is not an issue, ( wet and wavy wig ) but when you covet the looser curl pattern that means you do not like the curl pattern you were blessed with, manageability aside.

    Adam passed down imperfection to all mankind (Rom 5:12)
    Jesus as the corresponding ransom sacrifice opened the way for righteous mankind to receive perfect human life forever.(1 Cor 15:22,45; Psalms 37:10,11,29; Rev 21:3-6)
    Enjoying one's hair in its imperfect state is good.
    Under heavenly kingdom rule coming at any time now perfection will be restored and enjoyed by those righteous in paradise on earth (Matt 6:9,10;24:3,14,42,44)
    What Jehovah God and Jesus wants for mankind will be fulfilled (Isaiah 55:11)
    (Note: In paradise on earth under heavenly kingdom rule perfect hair won't need to have product to slick down edges 😂)
