I believe the reason it has a subscription option is to cover the costs of running and developing the website. The Plum Tree App was completely free, but they couldn't afford to keep the website running, which is why it shut down. There is still a free option; you just don't get all of the features.

It’s free if you only have one tree but you have to pay for more
honestly i don't mind but only one family tree is kind of mediocre lol
