    When the director says he wants a blue screen @ 0:15 but it turns out it's useless so you paint out the floor anyways. XD. Excellent job on that honestly very seamless!

    I'm not sure I'd call that matt painting more projection painting there were a lot of 3D models in there. Excellent work though, not denying that. Incredible skills for sure.

    Can anyone tell what is the name of the last effect applied after all the matte paintings are finished in a scene? The effect that blends and makes cgi things and elements blend with real environment to create a realistic look

      by taking their comps, animating the transparency of their layers or animating the layer to move into place. Sometimes putting a grid effect on them and animating the effect to make it normal. They basically have to make these like they would any of their animations.. but this is made by the people who made the shots to begin with. You can't take someone else's work and do this to it.

    Watching all of this showreels, it's very difficult to understand the complexity involved in making this, unless you are the one who made this. The slide transitions, brake downs, grids and clay renders of the 3D objects doesn't help too much either to get the idea how it was done since you don't see everything anyways and have to guess in a lots of shots what was done and why it was done.

    Why do they never put titles of the shows and films in these showreels? Isn't that the point, to show the quality of your work and also point out, that it was used in some big and well-known projects? Although I say "well-known", it doesn't mean that a person can recognize all of them by just looking. I might have heard about them but never got to watch them.

    • @paulgrl5227

      NicKeLas I'm so ok with you!! But in the big company's showreel we can see the name of the film/série and sometimes if we go on the company's website we can see wich softwares they used, how they do...

      Photoshop: matte painting, 3D Objects (fbx or alembic) and a 3D Camera track -->
      Nuke: Projection mapping
      I think something like that :p

    • @shadowproductions9771
      @shadowproductions9771 6 років тому

      basically though there are tons of programs that can do any of this. Photoshop is easy for doing matte paintings. You can use Cinema 4d, 3ds Max, Maya, Blender or others to do the 3d effects and you can composite it all in the 3d program or compositing software like After Effects.
      Basically you take a still of the shot you're wanting a matte painting for, put it in photoshop, create the painting, blending the edges until it matches.. then come over to a program like after effects, track the camera, goto the frame you took a still of, place your matte painting, parent it to your null from your tracking and it will stay in place in the scene, assuming there's no huge change in perspective (it can handle moves but not pans)

      Jeffrey Moore I hate having to justify reasonable criticism every time I give it. Just like a film critic isn't capable of creating the film himself, I am critiquing a form of art which I could not create myself. However I do have eyes and I have seen the world around me and can compare it to the CGI displayed in this video. I personally feel like there were a few examples in the showreel that lacked enough polish to trick my eyes into thinking they were real. Please point out what exactly is wrong with that.

    So wouldn't digital matte paintings just be cgi?

    • @niklashemker8535
      @niklashemker8535 7 років тому

      I guess CGI and matte paintings have been moving towards each other to the extent where the term has become more about the intended result rather than the method.

      kind of like a rose is always a flower but a flower isn't always a rose. There are CGI Matte paintings/set extensions though not all of them are cgi.. many are just layered videos or images.
