Buy more than you need. If you need a can of soup, buy two or three. Just buy more than you need within what you can afford. I don't know how your going to do this with 5 dollars but the idea of 'stockpile' is so that you don't have to panic and run to the store when everyone else is doing the same thing.

  • @kilajai
    @kilajai 3 місяці тому +6

To build is to choose!! Stockpile should be separate for a little while at least 2-3months while accumulating. Dont rotate just yet.. These $5 trips, don't use them at all for a bit. If you can afford with your regular grocery budget: purchase 1 extra of shelf stable food items. Goal is 2 pantries, one "working" pantry that you pull from for daily meals and the second pantry that you will begin to rotate once you develop the surplus. A fast trick I found useful is to sacrifice and bulk buy. For instance, my stockpile budget was $10/week. Instead of my #7 at whataburger I'd take that $10 to Aldi and buy 12 cans of corn. Next week instead of coffee and egg bites at Starbucks I take that $10 to Aldi and get 12 cans of black beans. Week after that, skip target's dollar spot and spend that $10 on 12 cans of diced pineapple then that 4th week spend $10 on just ME! Next month do it all over again with different items each having a singular focus for that week. BOOM instant-not so instant-pantry. After 3 months of that begin rotating with regular grocery trips... used a can of corn, buy a can of corn, ate a box of MacNcheese buy a box of nacNcheese. Newly purchased items go in the back push everything to the front. You'll also notice once you develop a surplus you don't use them as fast. I often write my purchase date in sharpie on the can or jar so I know when it was brought it. Hope this all helps, sorry for the novel.

Hey girl, I recently found your channel, and I have enjoyed several of your videos. So you asked for stock up tips. Well, my best one would be do not feel bad for using the food in your pantry. We know it is a very good thing to do that. For your situation, I think I would take the $5 a week stock up budget and buy multiples of the same product. That way, there will be some left for later. It is possible you're accidentally knowing your stock pile items will be helpful this week. So make the meal plan and then buy stock up items that are unrelated to the plan. I hope you will keep the good content coming and God bless you and your beautiful family :)

Do the tracking of what and how much you use each week so when you do buy you'll buy enough to use and enough to stockpile. Another person suggested to keep 2 separate areas, i do. Stockpile the $5 worth of foods, then when you have enough to rotate into your kitchen pantry or shelves then start the rotation process. Then you can start on just buying the sale/stock up priced items. Maybe try $10/week of able, then go back down to $5. There are so many good ideas already in the comments I'm sure you will find the best ideas and figure it out. 😁👍Good luck and have fun with it. P.S. Nothing I have is for emergencies. I rotate it all and have worked on my stockpile for 3 years heavily but have always had about 1 month's worth and now have about a years worth.

When you are just building do not use the emergency food.
Once you have a large stockpile then you can begin to rotate.
    Start with dried beans
    Rice
    Canned beans
    Pasta
    Tomato sauce
    Canned tomatoes
(The tomatoes are multi purpose for soups stews and pasta sauce)
    Ramen
    Flour
    Sugar
    Baking powder
    Yeast
    Corn meal
Spices and seasoning (especially chicken bullion)
After the basics then you can add additional items that are more costly. Like others said every shopping trip buy one or 2 things as your budget allows. And shop sales. Loke that tuna for .77 cents was a great price! You need the dried food and staplea to cook as normal. Also get a camping stove or some way to safely cook if power and gas is out.

How I build my pantry is …”use it and put it back”. For instance, say I have bags of rice in pantry. If I use 1 bag of rice, I purchase one on my next grocery trip and replace it in my pantry. Keep a grocery list of needs as you go rather than trying to remember what you have used the day you go to the store. I hope these help you keep your pantry stocked

the tip of "1 is none a 2 is one"
a working pantry is what you would do your regular cooking from and your "stash pantry" is what you pull from and move to the working pantry..so you must keep the stash pantry full..ex: rice, we keep 50# of rice at all times so when i pull rice(which i pull 5# bag at a time) on my next big shop i know i need to replace/rotate it back into my stash pantry...store what you eat and eat what you store...in our pantry the basics are
    rice
    dry beans
    flour
    sugars
    tea/coffee
    pasta
    canned meats
    canned veggies
    soups..dry mix and canned
    muffin mix
    baking supplies
    knorrs side dish packets
bouillon cubes/spices...there is more and some 25 year foods

I have always kept items on hand due to illness, loss of income , price increases. It just makes sense. I do use the items in my prepping pantry but then I cook for 1 person.
I decided a while ago, that if I like an item, I would keep several on hand.
For example: canned Beets. One can gives me 2 servings, if I want to have them at least once a month I will need 12 cans. So, when they are on sale or at a reasonable price I purchase several cans. Same with Cranberry Sauce. I like it for more than just holidays so , I purchase 8-10 cans when it is on special.

for myself, i buy specific items in quantity.....so lets say spaghetti sauce.....i'll buy 5-10 at one time (that would be my item for stockpile for that week)...then when i do my regular bi-weekly grocery shop, lets say i used 2 spaghetti sauces, i would then replace them (rotating first in first out) so that i always have 5-10 on the shelf....so i do not buy a variety of things or pick a certain dollar value....i shop the sales and based on things i use most often i buy those first and add other variety of items later....more expensive things i will buy 2-3 at a time (still replacing as i use on regular grocery shops) but then keep buying that item till i have the amount of it on the shelf that i want (say again 10) then i move on to stocking another item.....hope this makes sense lol
oh and quick note on snacks! if you want a cheap snack to make that literally takes just a few mins, look up cake mix cookes....i make rice krispie squares, cake mix cookies, ch. chip cookies and wrap them individually and i buy large bags of chips, pretzels, etc.. and divide them up into sandwich bags and things like this for much cheaper snacks that my kids can grab. saves a ton of money! **if you divide up the chips, make sure that the sandwich bags have air in them so the chips do not get all broken up....i use a straw and blow some air in after i mostly seal the bag. works like a charm!

One way you can stop using your stockpile right away is by getting foods that you don't eat normally or brands you like less. I know they say stock only the foods you like, that way you have something you enjoy in the event of emergencies. But if you are just starting out, try getting the less popular brands of foods and then start adding the brands you like later... That way, at least you have something. I would buy one extra thing when I go for my regular grocery shopping, Like one extra bag of rice and one extra can of soup, (brands I already enjoy) but plan on one or two extra items each time you shop for groceries. Put the extra can in another room, in a box or plastic bin, under a bed or somewhere more difficult to get to and you are less likely to break into that stash. I have used a couple items of mine in my stash, especially when I was craving chocolate and didn't have any on hand except in my stash. But I replaced it the next time I went on a regular grocery run. :) As far as rotating, I have not done that yet cuz my stash is still relatively new so things are no where near best by date. Rotating is a good idea though... As far as non edible items don't forget things like batteries, lighters, flash lights, canned heat for safe indoor cooking etc. Hope this helps.

I lived in the country for years so stores were not as convenient to me as they are now. I’m about 5 minutes from Brookshires and a Walmart neighborhood market now. Airline Drive is about 15 minutes away. I’ve always stocked up. On vegetables like corn and green beans, cream of mushroom soup and tomato products before Thanksgiving Kroger would put them on a really good sale and I would buy cases of them usually enough for the year. With it just being me and my husband now I don’t buy as much but I still have a lot of food. I buy things when they are on sale. I cook dry pinto and great northern beans so I always try to have 10 of each. My friend picks them up for me and they are 1 1/2 lb bags so I only cook a half bag. When I get close to having 5 she gets me 5 more. I normally buy example carnation milk at Sam’s there are 8 in the package. I like to have 2 so a total of 16. When one of the pack is getting low I replace it. I do rotate. My stockpile is not big as it used to be. Once you get your stockpile like you want it it’s easy to buy everything on sale as you go. I can’t shop different stores like I did because of health reasons but I do shop the sales every week for the best deals. Now like the dog food our dog eats rarely goes on sale so on Saturday when dollar general has the $5 when you spend 25 I buy 2 bags it saves me $5 and she only eats one bag a month so I do it about every 2 months. I open the 2nd bag I buy 2 more bags. I rarely run out of anything but I am out of eggs at the moment. It doesn’t take long to build it and then it’s just replacing what you use. Jan

I think one way to do it if you are only going to use $5 is to find the cheapest thing of the most nutrition dense or filling food you can get that Sunday. 10 boxes of jiffy corn bread in this case or 15 cans of corn etc, That way you can start a larger collection and also use it to rotate as needed. After a while you can decide if it would be a better deal to save your five dollas and instead spend $20 at Sam's for instance on a case of something.

Excellent point i thinking about potential layoffs. It's always recommended to have a savings of at least 3 months' worth of living expenses (but with how inflation is today it likely should be around 6 months) to bridge between jobs.
Make sure to store your sugar and other baking goods appropriately! Double bagging them and making sure they're airtight if you're keeping them in long-term storage is a must. And as always, friendly reminder to freeze your grains (rice, oats, pasta) for a couple days before keeping them in your food storage!

Hello! I just found your channel and subscribed!!😁 I started "prepping" back in 2020, but my parents have prepped for years!! They started for Y2K, so I kinda grew up around "preppers" lol
How I rotate is, for example canned goods... I have a daily canned goods cabinet and I have a prepper pantry, so once my kitchen cabinet is out of canned corn, I'll restock with my pantry items and then add the cans I told from my pantry and write onto my grocery list so I can restock into my prepper pantry. As far and boxed items, that does get a little more tricky, but most of mine I store into a food grade bucket or into mylar bags, so I don't really rotate them. Those are ready for when crap does hit the fan. I know for the most part what all I have so I do try and rotate the best I can as long as they aren't packed away PROPERLY for long term storage.... I hope this makes sense. I saw old jars from spaghetti sauce, pickles, etc and reuse for dry beans, rice, pasta, etc. (You have to make sure the lids are completely free of old odor of pickles or your food will taste like whatever was in the jar lol) then I drop a oxygen absorber into the jar and close up. So as long as I keep in a cool dark place they'll last for YEARS!! Looks like you're on the right path!!😊

At first, set aside a stack of shelves specifically for your prepping pantry. Don’t eat from it. When you are far enough ahead that you feel comfortable with the excess, then combine your foods & rotate. First in, first out. Eat your oldest foods first. Always put the newest in the back. WAYS TO MAKE YOUR STOCKED FOODS LAST LONGER:
    1. When I buy canned food, I buy the cans with the longest expiration date (you probably do also). I eat from the canned food that will expire quicker.
    2. If I need 2, I buy 4. I do not calculate the "extra" food, as "needed" food.
    3. I always take from what I am going to currently use: I take two rolls from a pack of toilet paper. I take two cans from canned food.......whatever I currently need, I buy enough, in order to take at least two off the top, to save. If I need 10 rolls of TP, I buy 12 or more, and take two off the top. Whatever I save, I do NOT DEPEND ON, as if it is not even there....unless it is about to expire (food only).
    4. If you have a local food bank, food pantry, and you qualify for assistance, and you aren't too proud 😊, you can use that food first, and save on your household food bill. Sometines, you may only need to get canned food from the food bank, or just boxed food.
    5. If I buy a large amout of something, I will portion out some to vacuum seal in a mason jar. Vacuum sealed foods lasts longer than most expiration dates, on non perishable foods. If I buy 10lbs of rice, I only plan to use 5lbs and vaccum seal the rest, as if I never brought it. Vacuum sealed white rice, not jasmine or brown.
THE FOOD I BUY TO STORE, IS NOT TO BE USED, BEFORE I USE ALL THE FOOD I HAVE SET ASIDE FOR ROTATION.
    HOPE THIS HELPS.
