    I bought one of these in June 2020. A bit of fun to take me home to the 80's from this mad world.
    As I said, I bought it as a bit of a joke. Radio? Chrome? The toys? 😁😁
    BUT when I loaded it up with camping gear and set off for the Highlands, expecting to come back on a tow truck...
    Christ what a tourer!! You realise why the Goldwing has survived so many decades. Brilliant at doing what it was built for!!!
    Urban commuting on a hot hot summer day? Erm, no so much.😁

    3 weeks ago I just picked up an 84 goldwing aspencade and I love it. It handles great, has low miles(38,000), and I couldn't beat the price. $800 and the only thing that didn't work was the radio and I put one on from and old car I had laying around and it's great. If you get a chance to get one of these machines, jump on it. You can't beat the ride and the power and the storage for the money

    The 1200 is for me, the best of all the goldwings.
    I had one, andd to this day, I never found out if it was the interstate of the aspancade, the paper work never said what it was, and the word on the back was awol and there was no clues as to what it was, but it never bothered me.
    I fitted a car stereo ( should have used a marine one cos I got cauight in teh wet and it shorted and we had fun with sparks )
    I was originally going to buy the 1000 that had been fully restored and the engine was sorted out and it only had 23K on the clock so it would have bee na great option, but that had been sold the day before I decided to buy it and I went in with the cash for it, but it had gone, and by that time, I had made my mind up to get a GoldWing, and they only had a 1200 left, so sod it... I came home on that instead. using the money I had for the 1000 and a friggin loan for the rest of the price of the 1200.
    But, we joined a local GoldWing club and it was ok, but we felt out of place if I am honest, but we made a few great friends, and so I was fully able to compare mine with others, and yes, the 1200 is the best of them all.
    The 1000 is unfaired and is a bike.
    The 1100 is basically a bored out 1000 and with FibreGlass fairing and boxes, its a slow cumbersome heavy piece of shit.
    The 1200 went ABS and is lighter than you could ever expect. It is in fact slightly lighter than my Suzuki GS850 and yes, as its a flat-4, teh weight is all down at the bottom while the GS is very top heavy. I once dropped the GL, when I was turning around on gravelly road and lost my footing ( I was in a mood because I took the wrong road aznd the wife was nagging etc etc etc ) but I picked it up without eve nbreaking a sweat.
    The 1500 and onwards are simply too huge. They are reliable yes, but when it comes to doing basic maintenance on them, you have to have a huge garage with loads of space, and you need loads of money to buy the parts... At least the 1200, when I replaced teh shocks, the parts were affordable and I was able to do it, and not require a garage or a mechanic to help me.
    Right now, I am slightly disabled and so I need to ride trikes and I have had a Harley 1200 for almost 2 years now, but I found out the expensive way, that Harleys are fuckign pieces of shit that rot on british roads, and so I have also bought a VW Beetle based B&I Trike and thats now just hit its first 1000 miles ( yes only 1K ) and its clearly superior in every way to that fucking piece of shit harley.
    So, I am going to be looking to trade in my Harley for another trike of biek with sidecar, and the GL1200 is certainly one option that I will definitely consider.

    A puff of grey smoke on start-up when cold usually
    indicates worn valve stem seals. If the smoke disappears after a few minutes
    then don't worry. This can happen even on low mileage engines and is more a case
    of age rather than mileage. The valve adjustment is hydraulic and needs no
    maintenance, but really high mileage units have been known to get a bit noisy
    and may require attention.

    • @ShawnKitchen
      @ShawnKitchen 5 років тому +8

      That's incorrect. No oil is stored above the heads, so no oil leaks past the valve stem seals while parked.
      Oil smoke at startup is caused when the bike is parked on the side stand and one of the left side pistons is near TDC. Oil on the crank side of the piston can seep past the rings and collect in the combustion chamber, where it's burned on startup.

    • @dinkaboutit4228

    The good news for folks stateside who'd like an old GoldWing is that you can buy such nicely-kept '80s examples all day long for $2000 or less as their owners age out of riding...or at least muscling around such a behemoth. Same with those big old Nipponese V-Twin "metric cruisers" of the '90s like V-Stars, Vulcans and the like. If one were British and thinking of motorcycle touring through North America, which wouldn't be the worst holiday you've ever had, buying one of these old beasts and just selling it when you returned home for whatever you could get for it might well be cheaper than renting a ride. Or, you could ship it back home to your "Sceptered Isle" for maybe $1,000. Your far most likely mechanical issue with these older breeds is likely to just be cloggy carbs from them just sitting around in a garage a couple-few years unridden before the previous owner (or his wife) passes it on.

    I own a 1986 Goldwing with about 70,000 miles on it I have replaced the front fork o rings and tires and battery . I really do not recommend all the extra lights as the charging system is about 30 amps if you change to led lights you will gain quite a bit if I run premium gas 91 octane you can get close to 50 miles to the gallon . On a trip with a friend of mine of about 250 miles averaging 60 miles per hour I did 49.9 miles per gallon as for comparing to a 1500 the 1200 has 92 horsepower and the 1500 has 100 horsepower but the 1500 weighs 80 pounds more

    I've always heard that the 1200 Gold Wing was troublesome, especially the stator. I see a lot of used ones but they're usually low mileage and that makes me suspicious. Have had a couple of 1100s..They were trouble free.

    • @kevinrussell5099
      @kevinrussell5099 4 роки тому +1

      Absolutely right about the stator, I know from experience. It was a slight design change in the angle the engine sits in the frame on the 1200's that causes the problem. More oil exposure on the stator windings and the oil detergent breaks down the insulation and you have a shorter out stator. Best fix is an alternator conversion that's pretty easy to do after you get the clearance note for the crank pulley machined into the timing belt covers. It's a bullet proof fix that's completely hidden and puts out far more wattage than the stator.

    • @markm1984
      @markm1984 3 місяці тому

      It's a scam the stators don't go bad it's the three wires that connect from the stator ,just solder the connections and never have a problem, it's all the shops do and tell you it cost $2,000.00 to do it,happened to me 😊

      I think the cost he mentioned was due to the fact that the model he had, had EVERYTHING extra that could be had.
      Plus nothing was mentioned about mileage etc.
      You can absolutely get cheaper models and you can also get more expensive ones.
      You can get Goldwings for only 1000 in the UK and I have seen even cheaper... But they are fucked up and nearing the end of their life, and, just for you to note, I have looked and see them for well over 10K in Canada, su just because you say you can get them for 1800, means absolutely nothing.

I think the 1500 is a superior machine on paper but it's heavier and if you can't do your own spanner twirling, a garage going to spend half a week just getting the plastic off to start work. I've heard of Hinda dealers refusing to touch 'em.
