  • Captain Nemoy could not have docked this Nautilus any better. Texas Mariners Cruising Association "Spring Fling" 2016. Pleasure Island Marina, Port Author, Texas. 35 to 40 knot winds in the marina as we arrived. Getting sideways turned out to be the best option.

    Skipper got all the praise but did jack shit, it was the tender operator that kept the boat balanced for the side slide down the moorings until the “hero” just had to go into reverse and plant it on the pontoon.

    It is nice, to find a captain knownig the forces and currents.
    Bravo to the rib crew , too.😯

    Certainly not 35 to 40 knots which is actually force 9. As a professional skipper I'd say F4 max (look at the flags) and with that wind and direction it should have been a straightforward berthing, bows in if the wind was really causing a problem.

  • @ShroomKeppie
    @ShroomKeppie 6 років тому +27

    I have to question that wind speed, though: 35-40 knots is 40-46 mph. That's Force 8 on the Beaufort Scale, a "Fresh Gale", with the description "Twigs break off trees, moderately high sea with blowing foam." It's also Tropical Storm-level winds on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
    Now I'm not denigrating that bit of seamanship at all, but there's no way there were tropical storm force winds in that marina. From the flags and pennants in sight, I'd guess 15-20 knots max.

    Seems like you could come in bow first then use the prop walk with a few bursts to keep the stern still whilst the wind push the bow to starboard 🤔

    Very creative, works well if you have a tender available. But why is the starboard (luff) dock line not prepared at all ?

    In these cases you can approach the mooring by entering bow side instead of stern side. Less elegant but more effective...especially if you are alone or without a dingy.

    Nicely done! He's very fortunate that his boat moves sideways evenly in a crosswind. What I mean is, my boat is over 40 years old with a higher bow profile and lower stern (William Tripp design), so a crosswind always pushes the nose of the boat to leeward.
    By the way I'm not sure if you mean Captain Nemo, or Leonard Nimoy, but I doubt Spock could have done a better job unless he used the Vulcan Mind Meld!

    • @mikescher9266
      @mikescher9266 5 років тому +1

      There was a dinghy applying force on the bow when necessary to keep everything straight. Also, he may have had the use of a bow thruster. Nonetheless, and in spite of other comments here, I say "job well done". The objective is to get tied up with no damage and that was accomplished.
