I swear, this is the equivalent of being transported back in time and sitting in the Wright Brothers workshop and watching them work and listening to them work out problems in real time. It's like a one-man Skunkworks. Awesome. Just, awesome.
Mike Patey, you are indeed a steely-eyed airplane building jock and a great big shout out to you from your loyal fan club all the way down in Southern Arizona's sleepy little town of Sierra Vista right next to the Mexican border! I've started our very own Sierra Vista Arizona Mike Patey Fan Club (SVAZMPFC - rhymes with ? - well, we'll take a vote at the next member meeting). Paid up membership = TWO! Me and my wife Denise! You are a 100% HOOT to watch and we're working hard to have you named an "Aviation National Treasure" (ANT?). Mike, I love your enthusiasm, initiative, motivation, and "Back To Work" attitude. You are truly enjoyable to watch and your projects are nothing short of AMAZING!! Aviation in all its aspects is blessed to have a personality like yours at the helm of arguably one of the most interesting presentations ever seen. Please, never stop being YOU and dazzling all of us with your incredible flying machines! John (down here in S. Az)
Mike I’m 32, always loved flying from the bottom of my heart, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to afford such a beautiful hobby and passion as being a pilot and having the skill to make such beautiful machines. In saying that I wait incredibly impatiently for every video you release. It gives me a ton of joy to see you build your beautiful birds and I deeply look forward to seeing you airborne in scrappy and one day once again in Draco. In saying that I pray for you often, thank God that he kept you and your family safe in the draco mishap, and can’t wait to see what you do next! Please keep these coming for everyone that has been living in the air through your videos. The closest I’ve gotten is a Part 107 license for cinema drones;0) Thanks for all your hard work!
Whoever gave this a thumbs down clearly doesnt know Mike or his unmatched attention to detail. They clearly dont have a love of aviation that the rest of us do. I was bummed that this video was only 41min long. I could watch Mike work all day. Scrappy will be a true piece of art. Cant wait to see the maiden flight. Back to work!
It's the beautiful attention to detail everywhere in the engineering ideas that I love in Mike's videos. Already accounting for 5 thou of paint each side, and having 'proper' access panels!! So simple, but actually obvious, and yet all these little things are so often overlooked by many major manufacturers.
And then consider that he has thought to make the cowl flap an actual flap to effectively raise the nose of the airplane. Then make it his bomb bay door to drop toy soldiers....... I lack the words to adequately describe Mike Patey.........
your enthusiasm for your project is contagious ! i am a custom auto fabricator and build machines by using other parts from various mechanical objects .combined to do various unique tasks.basically i utilize well engendered objects combined to accomplish something i need! and you and your brother completely blow my mind with your abilities .you guys are inspirational.thank you and i am excited to witness history when you fly scrappy . ithought my jub was cool. you guys have the most amazing life style ..hope to shake your hand one day.
On a side note, my son ( 6 ) watches these vids with me. After this one he went into the room and got all his legos to try and build a big plane with crazy ideas himself. Where it all starts right there. So your inspiring another generation.
Mike, you're a "lucky guy?" I'd say that you are very "blessed." Your intellect, your energy, your lovely bride and wonderful children. Yep, "BLESSED" you are!
How can you push the thumbs down button with Mike. I’ve been around aviation my entire life and Mike has got to be one of the best around, add to it his attitude and it’s nothing but greatness!! At the very least I’m in a better mood after watching his videos but most of the time I want to start a project of my own. Well done Mike, keep up the good work and keep bringing us the great videos!!
Mike, I'm leaving another request for you to give us more videos in q video series on the details of prepping and painting Scrappy. I want my planes' paint job to be as great as your paint job on Draco and ultimately Scrappy. So, when you get closer to prepping and painting Scrappy, please show us each step on how you get a great finish on your aircraft. There are a lot of us who want to paint our plane, and we could use your knowledge and skills to do the job... step by step! And, a big KUDOS for all that you do in making planes, and then sharing your expertise with us. You inspire us to build and modify planes the right way. You are admired and respected by all of us watching you work. You are teaching hundreds of us to be the kind of meticulous craftsman on our planes that you are. Keep these great videos coming. I'm a fan for life. Thanks!!
@@MikePatey and how about that battery for Draco?! Saw that months ago and have always wondered. Guessing you'll make this one too, that would be a great video. I know that because they're all great. Never imagined myself saying "Make a video on building a battery" lol. All of the things you think will bore us won't! Love it, thanks Mike.
Hey there. I’m 68 years young but if I were a young man I’d pay you to let me work with you. Your knowledge and enthusiasm is contagious. I’ve built a few custom Harley’s in my time and still fondly remember the feeling of accomplishment when, at 3 in the morning I finally called it a day. Please keep it comin Mike. Your vids are awesome. 😊
Have been a Steel Fabricator on boats and ships for 40+ years and have to say your skills and work ethic are something you should be very proud of and thank you for taking the time to enlighten us AMAZING looking forward to more
Mike your positive attitude, enormous enthusiasm and enviable work ethic are palpable. Every child in school should watch your video's to what can be achieved by positive people. You are an inspiration. Keep up the great work.
Greetings from Tasmania, Mike, you are an inspiring man, and I get tired just watching you work so hard. One day I would love to meet you and sit for 1 hour just to hear you talk. But I don't think you could sit still for that long. Love your work. Keep it up, which I know you will. Thanks again Wiz
This is by far the best channel on UA-cam, the Discovery channel should give Mike his own show. I'm dying to see the rest of this build. Thank you for sharing this with the world!
You just know there would be a market for this series on The Science Channel if the people watching these videos spread the word. There are 123,000 subscribers now... that's a start. The major problem might be that Mike really "NEEDS" another project!! ;^)
We get the opportunity to see the progress almost real time on UA-cam. I have been involved with Discovery and their production team. It takes months to bring anything to air. Mr. Patey is 100% in charge here.. it works. Excellent video Mike!
I so look forward to your vlogs. They are so informative, helpful and great to watch how you engineer and bring beautiful aircraft to fruition. I’m a retired aerospace engineer and love anything dealing with flying. My father was an airmail pilot flying the Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny” from 1924 until 1926 when the airmail service was taken over by commercial carriers.
The thing that amazes me about Mike (besides his creativity) is how hard he works and how much he gets done. Fingers crossed for many more happy landings and videos in the years to come.
Right alongside your innovative ideas, your practical approach to getting things done, your seemingly endless engineering skills, your boundless energy I'm also in awe of your ability to stretch time. I'm sure that you get more done in your one day than most people could possibly do in a week! Impressive, educational and entertaining to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Mike, the videos you create are really the top tier on what you can find on UA-cam. The editing and pacing are incredible! I'm always on the edge of my seat when watching and always can't wait for your next Scrappy installment. So glad you're able to incorporate pieces here and there from Draco, and obviously we all want to see Draco's return eventually. Thanks for doing what you do, buddy.
I have over forty years working with Composites. Your approach and prep for the moulds using aluminum skins was spot on perfect. Your skin of carbon on that plastic pre- weted was perfect. However when you work with carbon you should never run your bare hand down the cloth, even if you sanded this. I made this mistake and one fiber went into my finger. Had to go in to the doctor and he cut me open to find it. Three weeks later it was fine. One thing you said about Micro Balloons being strong is not true, they are very weak and tend to crack very easily. Cabosil is a lot stronger. You also can mix in carbon cut from your cloth very short with Cabo or Micro. I saw a little bondo stuck to your carbon, try a little bit of Partall wax and PVA over the bondo. Put a bit of PVA in a cookie sheet and use paper towel to spread this on(easier than spraying on). Just so you know this about exothermic epoxy in cups venting smoke in the air it produces cyanide and it will give you a ripping headache, plus it will catch fire in a garbage can. I would love to work with you and Composites. I built a lot of X-planes and Drones. Keep up this great work. ────────────────────░███░ ───────────────────░█░░░█░ ──────────────────░█░░░░░█░ ─────────────────░█░░░░░█░ ──────────░░░───░█░░░░░░█░ ─────────░███░──░█░░░░░█░ ───────░██░░░██░█░░░░░█░ ──────░█░░█░░░░██░░░░░█░ ────░██░░█░░░░░░█░░░░█░ ───░█░░░█░░░░░░░██░░░█░ ──░█░░░░█░░░░░░░░█░░░█░ ──░█░░░░░█░░░░░░░░█░░░█░ ──░█░░█░░░█░░░░░░░░█░░█░ ─░█░░░█░░░░██░░░░░░█░░█░ ─░█░░░░█░░░░░██░░░█░░░█░ ─░█░█░░░█░░░░░░███░░░░█░ ░█░░░█░░░██░░░░░█░░░░░█░ ░█░░░░█░░░░█████░░░░░█░ ░█░░░░░█░░░░░░░█░░░░░█░ ░█░█░░░░██░░░░█░░░░░█░ ─░█░█░░░░░████░░░░██░ ─░█░░█░░░░░░░█░░██░█░ ──░█░░██░░░██░░█░░░█░ ───░██░░███░░██░█░░█░ ────░██░░░███░░░█░░░█░ ──────░███░░░░░░█░░░█░ ──────░█░░░░░░░░█░░░█░ ──────░█░░░░░░░░░░░░█░ ──────░█░░░░░░░░░░░░░█░ ──────░█░░░░░░░░░░░░░█░
This one and all of Mike's videos that speaks about "The Math' he uses in the building of his planes, needs to be shown at ALL K-12th grade math classes to inspire students to get TURNED ONE TO MATH. The extremely poor and uninspiring teachers back in the 70's when I was in school, turned me totally off to math. Mike's videos are making me wish I would go back and re-do my schooling! VERY inspiring!!!
I saw you posted this new video and I was like "41 minutes? I'm not going to stay entertained 41 minutes." 41 minutes later, and I'm happy I watched it all. Great job as always, Mike. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I wish I had your skill AND energy. Keep it up!
As a fellow homebuilder ( R.V.-4 ) I eagerly await each of these videos! Your enthusiasm is infectious!!! The favorite part of my day is flipping on my iPad and seeing MIKE PATEY HAS UPLOADED A NEW VIDEO. Keep charging ! You are affecting more of us than you know. Gary
Starts the video with “I’m going to do something crazy”. Of course you are that’s why I love to watch your videos. If you did things normal I would be disappointed.
If he replied with the truth.... "I'm going to better engineer this" He would be challenged before people saw first 2 minutes. This man's Genius is like watching Leonardo DiVinci with a computer and power tools.
Thank you for posting these videos Mike. You joy and passion for building and flying shows with every milestone of the build. I’m not a pilot, but your excitement towards flying is contagious. Thank you for a glimpse into your life and passion of flying and building. Now, let’s get back to work.
"Something crazy" is an understatement. However, it is all backed with engineering knowledge and forethought. Some might say insane, I would say, build one for me too. LOL You are the master of achievement. Well done Mike, well done. Looking forward to watching you go vertical from the runway. Thanks for sharing
Mike, all I can say is that watching you dream up ideas and then put them into reality is better than most things that I have seen!! Keep Dreaming and I will keep watching your dreams come true!!!!
Hi Mike, first of all I gotta agree with you about you being lucky that the lovely Mrs Patey was willing to help you with sanding the aluminum skin/mold. I also want to say that you do an awesome job of explaining every aspect of your build and make it interesting for someone who may have an interest in general engineering but may have little knowledge of aviation. This is an awesome build, as was Draco and I for one can't wait to see the finished product. Now quit reading the comments and "back to work!"
It's CRAZY! when I see the things Mike thinks about and comes up with designing and building on these it's literally like watching an artist create a painting. He can see it in his mind, see things other people can't see and then can create, bring it to life! I never thought designing an airplane could be so much like art, until watching how Mike creates these things and now all I can see is art!
There is absolutely no better channel on UA-cam of aircraft building then Mike Patey's channel. Thank you Mike for showing us your amazing talent, you wouldn't believe how much you inspire other people with your amazing aircraft building talent. I beg you don't ever stop posting these amazing video's.
Mike is a master designer and craftsmen, far beyond my knowledge! I can't help, but following his ideas, turning into reality!! Please keep these entertaining, informative videos coming!! I've become an "Armchair" designer!!
You sir are seriously something else, the engineering and thought that is going into this plane is absolutely outrageous. it's the coolest project on UA-cam at the moment! The Wright brothers are proud!
Hi Mike, I really enjoy watching you put your amazing skills to work. You have tremendous abilities! Is there an episode on how you attach the carbon fibre to the skeleton? Back to work...
If I listened correctly, the cowl flap/bomb bay door. Once opened creates negative airspace/suction, how much depends on velocity. I'm sure you did the math on this. You did mention the sqin.area. My point is, the little paratroopers you plan to deploy wont fall, they will get sucked out of there pretty fast. I would check the tail wheel upon landing after you release your first stick. I enjoy your videos very much. Happy to see Scrappy evolving. Great stuff. Back to work!
You are a blody fanatic and you operate at that level. Nice to see someone so entusiastic about the work They do. Good on'ya man. Following to the end as i have on the "Draco" Watching ya from Croatia.
I dream you would teach me all your science Mike! I’m a big fan of your videos and as an engineer and flying things addict, I’m amazed by your projects! Huge respect!
Mike ... I have a build ahead of me ... which will present many challenges ... watching you do, what I thought was impossible, helps me believe my build is possible ... thank you !
This gut is a genious. I never see him with any notes or anything on a piece of paper. The whole building plan seems to be solely in his mind. Absolutely unbelieveable!!!
I love Mike's videos, I especially love watching the hands-on use of chrome-moly, carbon fiber, machining, welding, etc to create his wild flying machines.
Going back watching old scrappy videos for inspiration. Love this stuff! So much to learn and also super inspiring for some of the projects I'm working on.
I am learning so much from your Scrappy protect for things i want in my project. It started out as a 1943 interstate L6. But I want it to be transformed to 2030 (or beyond). I love composites and this video made things more clear. I love how you just do it, while I wonder if I should. It is a wonderful thing when you know you have influenced someone to better heights. And you have done that for me.
“I’m gonna do something crazy.” Well that’s normal for you and nothing new for us. I love the plane No doubt carbon cub owners will drool all over the panels in their planes when this thing cranks up Hope it has the same effect draco did when it went full bore
Mike, Another Excellent vid. Your Enthusiasm REALLY comes across in the Scrappy Series and is contagious. I've always thought that folks that can make a complex task/project 'look' easy are the ones you want to work with......... Watching the Scrappy vids is really fun and informative but it, to me, reveals just how much I DON'T KNOW. Many Thanks for Sharing Your Skills & Expertise.
Amazing to see how quick, precise and simple you make it look! Well done!! I know there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, but it is super inspiring.
challenge accepted, and right now at 30 minutes in, I don't say what I am knowing... I mean, I don't what know I am say.... ahhhhh you gett tjagbaotngegfbanrthdbadrtnadfasbtb dsabeaerbfgnavbrhjhgtrertghny
Another riveting video! It's like opening a birthday present every time I click on a new episode. Thank you so much for sharing your fun (and hard work).
I'm sitting at a non aviation-related bar and I can overhear some complete strangers talking about this video and how they can apply your techniques to their project.
I love these video's. They are very inspiring. For their Senior Engineering project at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) a group of engineers designed a jig to test the resistance to twisting force on rowing shells. They are made of composite material. It measured how much the boats would twist given a specific amount of force. Imaging using something like this to compare Scrappy before and after wrapping in Carbon fiber. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge and creativity.

I saw you posted this new video and I was like "41 minutes? I'm not going to stay entertained 41 minutes." 41 minutes later, and I'm happy I watched it all.
Great job as always, Mike. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I wish I had your skill AND energy.
Keep it up!
Mike you’re a legend! A great inspiration for personal goals!
Gary
With a carbon fiber fuselage instead of fabric, that is gonna be one fast slow aircraft!! So excited to see Scrappy flying!!!
Mike I am impressed with your energy level and you appear possess every skill known to man. You are living life to the max.
Starts the video with “I’m going to do something crazy”. Of course you are that’s why I love to watch your videos. If you did things normal I would be disappointed.
Yeah...when he said that the first thing that came to mind was, "and this is different...how?"
Brad
So I stopped the video at the intro.. to comment on his opening line... LoL 👍👍👍
If he replied with the truth.... "I'm going to better engineer this" He would be challenged before people saw first 2 minutes. This man's Genius is like watching Leonardo DiVinci with a computer and power tools.
@@michaelbochenski6299 Leonardo Patey.... Mmmmmm, that sounds about right. ;^)
So why have a stressed skin monocoque and a tube frame? There is unnecessary weight in the tube frame. The crazy bit is doubling up on the structure!
LOL
You are the master of achievement. Well done Mike, well done.
Looking forward to watching you go vertical from the runway.
Thanks for sharing
""Something crazy" is an understatement." Yeah, crazy like a fox!
Mike is a blessing to the world of aviation...love this channel
I have no background in aviation but I am totally addicted to these vids.
Mike, all I can say is that watching you dream up ideas and then put them into reality is better than most things that I have seen!! Keep Dreaming and I will keep watching your dreams come true!!!!
Yes I'm about to have a Happy watching Mike building Scrappy what an awesome end to my week. Thanks Mike Scrappy is my new drug of choice!!!
Smashed that like button before the video started, so excited!
It's CRAZY! when I see the things Mike thinks about and comes up with designing and building on these it's literally like watching an artist create a painting. He can see it in his mind, see things other people can't see and then can create, bring it to life! I never thought designing an airplane could be so much like art, until watching how Mike creates these things and now all I can see is art!
Who else thinks Mike needs to put in some cameras around the shop. (With mic) and just livestream 24/7?
NO don't put cameras up and stream 24/7. If you do I will never leave the house again. I would be riveted to my computer. Not a good idea. LOL
And in scrappy and new Draco
I would have to make a selfie stick belt attachment so I can watch all day 😂
Well something like that maybe not complete 24/7 but yeah
There is absolutely no better channel on UA-cam of aircraft building then Mike Patey's channel. Thank you Mike for showing us your amazing talent, you wouldn't believe how much you inspire other people with your amazing aircraft building talent. I beg you don't ever stop posting these amazing video's.
I hit the LIKE button as soon as I see Mike Patey and then Enjoy
Me too before I even see it.

Yes, it sounds like a sewing machine
Mike is a master designer and craftsmen, far beyond my knowledge! I can't help, but following his ideas, turning into reality!! Please keep these entertaining, informative videos coming!! I've become an "Armchair" designer!!
Steve McQueen is sitting in heaven saying "Damn!!! This guy is COOL!!!".
Howard Hughes is of the same opinion. ;)
This is the only channel that Chuck Norris watches and he watches it with The Most Interesting Man In The World.
Scot G you guys crack me up 😂😂😂
@@MikePatey You just do what you do & keep feeding us. Thank you.
Scot G LOL yeah I agree, feed the spectators, we don't want no one getting hurt, keep us fed! : D
Stay tuned 🤠👍🏻
If I listened correctly, the cowl flap/bomb bay door. Once opened creates negative airspace/suction, how much depends on velocity. I'm sure you did the math on this. You did mention the sqin.area. My point is, the little paratroopers you plan to deploy wont fall, they will get sucked out of there pretty fast. I would check the tail wheel upon landing after you release your first stick. I enjoy your videos very much. Happy to see Scrappy evolving. Great stuff. Back to work!
You could drop an anchor through the Bombay door and stop a lot quicker!
Hahaha. Like an aircraft carrier landing hook. But for dirt instead of a cable...
Ha! We all know he's probably considered that!
Cute... candies for the kiddies... Precious. We love you, Mike! Chandra, too. She’s the luckiest woman on earth!
💪🏻 “let’s get back to work” - M. Patey
👍🏻
You are a blody fanatic and you operate at that level. Nice to see someone so entusiastic about the work They do.
Good on'ya man. Following to the end as i have on the "Draco"
Watching ya from Croatia.
You do incredible work. Nothing more I can say.
I dream you would teach me all your science Mike! I’m a big fan of your videos and as an engineer and flying things addict, I’m amazed by your projects! Huge respect!
Mike, I love the way that this Cub is coming along. Great engineering on all of your design!!
Mike, I thoroughly enjoy watching your craftsmanship and enthusiasm in your builds. Looks like so much fun to do. Scrappy is really taking shape.
the breaking of the keyboard "0" was amazing. also the carbon work is sweet
I love watching your videos, your enthusiasm and attention to detail are awesome!
You know the content is good when you watch a 40+ minute video and it feels like 5 minutes
You get that with Project Binky
This is by far the best build series on UA-cam 👍🏻
Mike must be an alien. No human being works that hard or performs such brilliant engineering.......
Robert Hiekel he doesn’t have to he has a clone named mark
Thank you for sharing all your enthusiasm for this project. It is labor of love.
Mike: "alright guys, this is the end of this video..."
Me: "darn, already? ...what!!!? 40 minutes!!!?" 🤯👍
Mike ... I have a build ahead of me ... which will present many challenges ... watching you do, what I thought was impossible, helps me believe my build is possible ... thank you !
my guess for the front suspension is a crazy twist on double wishbone with a anti roll-bar perhaps :D
Mike is the Guy that shows just how hard work pays off. Love your videos Buddy.
I've already watched this three times. More Scrappy
Ja how far is scrappy
This gut is a genious. I never see him with any notes or anything on a piece of paper. The whole building plan seems to be solely in his mind. Absolutely unbelieveable!!!
I meant "guy". Terrible autocorrection
"This is the tool everyone needs" Mike says while standing in front of some crazy cnc lathe :D
I love Mike's videos, I especially love watching the hands-on use of chrome-moly, carbon fiber, machining, welding, etc to create his wild flying machines.
Somebody give this guy a Collier Trophy already!
Mike: I watch with awe the energy and enthusiasm. I VERY much enjoy watching your builds and learn a ton from what you show us.
God has blessed you sir, give Him all the glory!
Going back watching old scrappy videos for inspiration. Love this stuff! So much to learn and also super inspiring for some of the projects I'm working on.
Mike: "I'm gonna do something kind of crazy."
All of us: "Oh. Oh. NOW he's gonna do something kind of crazy. Now."
Damn! I wish I'd said that...! That is Mike Patey distilled to the max.
I was waiting for him to say he was turning it into a VTOL now. Theres still time
Todd R . Did you see the motor/prop? Essentially it is a VTOL
Yeah you’re lucky guy but man youve worked so hard for what you have looks incredible can’t wait to see more
Greg Kostensky thank you! 🤠
Everything done to perfection. You have the best work ethic of anyone I've ever seen Mike. It would be such an honor to be your apprentice.
“I’m gonna do something crazy.” Well that’s normal for you and nothing new for us. I love the plane
No doubt carbon cub owners will drool all over the panels in their planes when this thing cranks up
Hope it has the same effect draco did when it went full bore
Mike, Another Excellent vid. Your Enthusiasm REALLY comes across in the Scrappy Series and
is contagious. I've always thought that folks that can make a complex task/project 'look' easy
are the ones you want to work with......... Watching the Scrappy vids is really fun and informative
but it, to me, reveals just how much I DON'T KNOW. Many Thanks for Sharing Your Skills & Expertise.
" well...it's a carbon cub, we didn't mean it was actually built from carbon.."
*mike: hold my beer*
The first time I heard carbon cub, I really was hoping it had a frame made out of carbon fiber (and titanium). But it is still an impressive airplane.
@@44492611 I kind of assumed it was a composite aircraft till istarted watching youtube aviation channels
@@44492611 That would be totally insanely strong, lightweight and I bet the performance would be better than Draco in competition.
@@44492611 Yea, Mike?! When y'all gonna start rolling/baking your own carbon frame members too? 🤪 🤟🏽🐻
Amazing to see how quick, precise and simple you make it look! Well done!! I know there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes, but it is super inspiring.
Drinking game idea: take a shot every time he says “back to work”.
You won't make it to the end of the video.
I'll need a carbon fiber liver for that to be safe.
If we made it half way through the video playing this game we’d end up saying “okay mike...” and go grab some power tools.... not a good idea...
LOL, you'd get a "Cease and Desist" letter from your liver's attorney by the 10th minute.
challenge accepted, and right now at 30 minutes in, I don't say what I am knowing...
I've followed this channel since the making of Draco and just want to say, thank you Mike and Mark. You're awesome!
When Mike says something will be crazy things are going to get real
I like how you work mike! Only one way to do things, the right way, no short cuts! 👍
This build is sooo freaking awesome!
Mike Patey: The Grind Hard Plumbing of the aviation world.
Lol, you watch them too !!
This man deserves all the happiness he has. His work ethic is second to none!
