Lockheed is a lot more than just Kitty's pet, in fact he's anything but. She said he's her best friend, and he also happens to be a badass member of the Flock, a dragon like species who travel ins special ships after their homeworld was infested by their most hated enemies the Brood, a parasitic species of insectoids like the Xenomorphs. Lockheed became one of the Flock's most deadly warriors until he met Kitty at the age of 15 year old, and elected to stow away on the ship home. Interestingly Kitty had already told a story to Illyana about such a dragon, and she elected to name him after the Lockheed Martin Blackbird the X-Men go on most of their missions with, since his real name would be impossible for humans to speak. Lockheed formed a telepathic bond with Kitty, which is why she can understand him since his English is limited. He became an honoree X-Man, as well as secretly an agent of SWORD, a planetary defense group overseen by Abigail Brand to repel alien invasions of Earth, and Excalibur, a team of mutants based in the UK. There Lockheed met another hated enemy, the mutant Pete Wisdom, whose pursuit of Kitty at such a young age angered him and the two became rivals. Despite his small stature at some two feet tall, Lockheed is exceptionally dangerous and feared by the entire Brood species, and even single handedly defeated the mighty alien warrior Ord as part of the Astonishing X-Men. On Battleworld Lockheed met another dragonoid, who was named Puff, who he fell in love with. Unfortunately when returning to Earth the transport process caused her to grow to immense size and become dangerous, attacking Tokyo. Lockheed ultimately was forced to stop her, though he was sad to do so. But Puff would eventually return at her regular size, and the two would have two children in secret. Though he might seem just to be Kitty's 'pet', Lockheed might be one of the X-Men's bravest and most powerful warriors, even though he's not a mutant himself.
Well, Lockjaw is pretty much an Inhuman himself. Also, Zabu is Ka-Zar's animal companion; and Ka-Zar pretty much considers Zabu his brother. So, Lockheed is in good company.
