Right now I'm teaching history, so I love this video because I can use it for a quick, entertaining, and easy-to-understand explanation of historiography for my middle schoolers... but usually I teach FYC, so I REALLY love this video because real students produced it for a real purpose, and real audiences are still interacting with it years later. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you, students!

@FantasmaBAnco, I'm not really much of a social scientist, more of a writing/communication person--but I think you're definitely on the right track. That's because I see historiography as inevitably asking questions about why people in certain times/places think, analyze, and communicate the way they do. And that seems inherently tied to issues of psychology, social class, culture, and so on--the historiographer is really analyzing the stuff produced by a specific culture. Thanks for asking!

Having recently returned to Gibbon for reading on Byzantium, post-antiquity Rome, the "Carlovingians" (as he calls them) and the "new empire of Islam"; I'm struck again by the relevance of the history that Gibbon himself was living through circa and post 1776, when he published it. Gibbon was retrospectively trying to explain such current "catastrophes" as the British Empire's sudden "loss" of north American possessions. Context is so much.
