I have watched videos for two days. My first 2 days ever knowing anything about Junk Journals. I am so ignorant I didn’t know what a “signature” was in book lingo. Yes, this 60 something lady is teachable. These have been 2 wonderful days. You have such a soothing voice
Thank you, Debby, for your kind comment! I’m so glad you are enjoying this series! I I just started a new one too, so you’ll have another to watch! Haha! From one 60 something to another...there’s always more to learn in this wide world!! And it keeps us young to keep learning!! Hugs to you! ❤️
Loving this series, as I have not seen you sew your laces to the paper like this before. Did laugh when you went to sew and your foot press wasn't even plugged in so funny, You should have a video of all Gayle's blunders, it will be hilarious. xxxxx
Thank you so much I know all the terminology but have never actually made a JJ... I really really appreciate you going through it all step by step. Not only have I never made one but I'm also blind in one eye which makes things a little more difficult & time consuming for me. Not to mention frustrating. So this video was brilliant for me. Thank you again. Xx
It has been "Gayle Day" in my craft room today....I am in process of constructing a new journal for my shop and so far I have watched you hidden spine tutorial(I want to use an old "Diary of an Edwardian Lady" cover for this journal) and now as I assemble my signatures, I am watching your make yours....fun crafting with you : }....
I can't stop watching your videos. I'm hooked. Fabulous instructor. Thank you so much for your inspiration. Thank you for this step by step - It is so awesome watching you create from nothing to something so fabulous!!!
Thanks so much for going step by step,,, haven't ever actually seen the sewing done like that. Very Very interesting and most inspiring !!!!!!! I love seeing start to finish. There's someting new everytime I watch and I Thank you so much for being patient with us !!!!! To see it done makes so much more sense than trying to visualize it !!! TFS
I always come away with something from a video even if it is intended for beginners. I love to see other journal crafters process and I don't have to be glued to the screen and can work on my own project at the same time. And your videos are always fun. TFS sweetie. Toodles.
Loving your thought process on choosing papers :) I currently have lots of different papers collected for making journals but no idea what to put where. Making up signatures is definitely less intimidating than a 'whole' journal. Now I feel encouraged :) Thank you Gayle
Gayle, I have just recently discovered your YT channel and I am loving it. I love the different series that you do. Trying to figure out how to organize and think through the process of putting together journals. Thank you for all the series that you do (I'm working backwords through your channel while you are spending time with your family.) TFS
I am new to your channel and have recently getting into journaling, card-making and tags. So, this series is perfect for me, as a beginner! I am a photographer by trade, so I use my images in the process. Thank you for taking the time to do this detailed series!
These last 2 videos have been wonderful and totally great for beginners. So many people that do them probably don't remember the beginning so thank you very much for this. I am a new subscriber and totally new to journals. I don't know why it took me so long to find you. On to part 3! Belinda :)
I love your videos, they are so much fun and I am learning so much. Thank you. I also would love to see you coffee die your paper. Blessings on your day!!
Hi Donna! I did a coffee dying tutorial just the other day! If you look through my videos, you'll find it. I think it's called Tutorial-Coffee Dying/Mark Making. Hope you'll find it and that it will be helpful! ❤️
Thank you so much for your videos for these how to junk journals, they are the best!! I was wondering if a 1.5 inch spine could fit 3 signatures of 10 pages each, not too stuffed with emphera. What do you think would that be too much stuffing?
Love your videos! Thank you for sharing! May I ask about issues creating signatures? I guess what I’m confused about, what if my papers aren’t big enough to just fold in half? Can I glue or sew two pieces together to get a big enough signature? I have two very wide book covers I’d like to use but don’t have paper big enough to fold in half to make a signature. Oh, also, not sure if you have tutorials but some of your papers are sooo cool, they don’t just look like standard tea or coffee dyed paper.
Thank you so much for teaching this. SO very helpful as I too have not yet made a junk journal, but I've been gathering ephemera, paper, trims, etc. in hopes to start soon! And of course spending way too much $$$ doing so, LOL!!!! But it's all so lovely and I can't help myself! So, my supplies are growing as our bank account is fast becoming depleted!!! My hubby is so sweet though, he hasn't packed his bags and left yet!! Seriously though, I do have a question about the spine. Will you sometime do a video about how to enlarge a spine? Or maybe link me to a youtube that shows how! I have a few books that are thin but I want to fill them with at least two signatures and so they will definitely need wider spines than what they currently have! Oh my, look at that, I've blabed on way to long, I'm really sorry! Hugs,
Hi Nancy! If you look in my tutorials playlist, you’ll find several spine videos. Most are with a Little Golden books, but the technique is the same with any book. ❤️
Love your videos Gayle, thank you! How did you achieve the circle and dotted square coffee stained patterned paper you used for these signatures? They are lovely and different.
I've been scared to try sewing on paper. I'm not a great with the sewing machines anyway so this was very helpful. Thanks for sharing it. I will give it a shot now. You made me feel like I can maybe handle it. Lol
You can do it, Jamie!! And remember...it's a junk journal, so if it's a bit messy, it just adds to the character. No pressure!! Let me know how it goes for you. ❤️
Cindy, the papers I used for this were from Paper Studio at Hobby Lobby. I think they were from the paper pad Theodosa Square or something like that. This has been such a long time ago, I’m having trouble remembering!! ❤️
Hi Ms.Gayle, I just want to know where did you get the paper your using on the outside of the first pages of your signatures? It looks like Tim Holtz's Postal tissue paper.I'm crafting with you! Of course I have to rewind several times because I just decided to make my first one!!!(Junk Journal) I'm picking out papers,I just tea and coffee dyed piles of stuff.Just a heads up, the tiny tiny tiny jewelry tags from Michael's do not dye well at all. They have a slick finish on them.Anyway I'm ready to watch part 3! Have a great Saturday with your family Ms.Gayle!!! ~Liz~
Hi Miss Liz! I just saw this comment, so sorry for the late reply! I think that paper was The Paper Studio from Hobby Lobby. I think it's called Theodosia Square. I'm probably to late to be helpful! ❤️
Thank you for doing this series of videos. It is very helpful and encouraging. Maybe I missed this detail but where did you get the vintage ladies papers/prints? And if you are printing them off of the computer, do you coffee date after you print? Thank you so much! I am excited to watch more!
Hi Sherry! The vintage lady papers were from a scrapbook paper pad call Theodosia Square by Paper Studio purchased at Hobby Lobby. I did coffee dye the papers. If I coffee dye a digi kit, I brush coffee on the back and let it air dry. Thanks for watching! ❤️
Hey Gayle, do you use your sewing machine for only paper sewing? I have my sewing machines for cloth...but not sure how they wear. :) You know...scissors for fabric only. :) Thanks...k :)
JosephinesDesigns.com I use mine for both, but...disclaimer here...I’m a horrible sewing machine mom!! I don’t clean it as often as i should or change the needle...all that maintenance stuff. I think it’s advisable to change your needle between doing paper and fabric. All I sew these days is journal stuff, so I don’t worry about it. But if you are going to do journal stuff then sew a piece of clothing, I’d clean the machine and change the needle first. ❤️
@@gayleagostinelli_ctThank you! My Sweet Husband bought me am inexpensive one for paper sewing for Christmas. My other machine is a commercial machine I had in my shop...when I sewed professionally. He's so cute...he bought 2 for me to choose from. Today I will return the other one. Hey a good reason to run into town to Hobby Lobby...win win!!! ;) Loving your channel and learning so much!!!! Happy New Year!!! k
Measurements for the paper would be helpful, but maybe you did that in a different video. (New subscriber and only recently bitten by the Junk Journal bug, so just starting to learn about it before I dive in.) Thanks.
I wish I had a sewing machine and knew how to sew. I think the stitching and loose strings brings so much more character to journals. I think not having them in my journals really discourages me and holds me back from completing one.
Arkansas Family may be a request for your birthday or Christmas? My husband got my machine for my birthday on sale at Joanns at a reasonable price. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! ❤️
Hope you don't mind my advice, but I find vintage sewing machines at the thrift store. Some are $25 other $45 and the vintage ones are heavier and therefore they do not bounce or vibrate when sewing. This keeps you tention where you want it and most of them will sew thru 3 layers of denim. You can't really hurt these machines. Hope this helps
Thanks, Trish! I appreciate all advice! I have a Singer from 1974 and am sorely tempted to go back to it!! They just don't make them like they used to!! 🙄❤️
How many pages are in the signature and what kind of paper do you use to coffee dye I tried it but I don’t get the crinkle noise my paper is stiff. I luv your videos I have learnt so much thank you.
Hi Diane! I don't remember for sure, but I think probably about 15 papers or 20 pages per signature. I usually do 15 to 20 pages in a signature. I try and leave enough space to embellish without out it being too, too full. And the crunch, I bake my papers to dry them in a 295 degree oven. It seems that thicker papers don't crunch as much as thinner. I use copy paper, 20 lb., whenever I can because it does crunch nicely. I have on my list to do a video on how I coffee dye. Maybe it will be helpful to you...when I get it done. So much to do!, 😄❤️
I do coffee dye my digis, Nancy. What I do is brush the back with a paint brush and let it air dry. I'll try and do a coffee dye tutorial next week sometime. Thanks so much for watching! ❤️
Hi Gayle. I just started watching your videos and I am really enjoying them. I have been wanting to start a junk journal for myself and it is a little bit overwhelming, but also looks like a lot of fun. You probably have already done a video on my question for you, but I will ask anyway. Where do you find paper and other items you use for your signatures? Also any other helpful hints you could pass along. Thank you very much. Joan
Hi Joan! I'm glad you're here and enjoying my videos! I find my paper in various places. Copy paper for coffee dying, I buy at Walmart, just the cheap stuff. I look for interesting paper at estate and garage sales and the thrift store. I also look for paper or book pages and paper ephemera at antique stores. As far as decorative paper goes, I buy digital paper kits on Etsy or use scrapbooking paper. Hope that helps, my dear! Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
Gayle, I'm about to give up. I needed a hobby and love the junk journals but mine aren't pretty. I get my sewing machine out, stitch around like you do, purchase really old books and destroyed them. As much as I try mine aren't pretty. I bought alot of stuff and try to put together but I'm getting so frustrated.
Pat, what if you tried. Copying exactly this series or some other You Tubers series. I think your own style will emerge eventually, but maybe starting out, if you see a pocket you like, try and recreate it as closely as you can then another, then some pages using paper you absolutely love. I wonder if that would help you with your end result. Keep trying, Pat, don’t give up! It’s only paper after all. It’s worth doing some practice runs to get the end result you’re looking for! 👍
@@gayleagostinelli_ct I agree with you totally and to be honest I finally did complete one, took me forever and day but it's not too bad. I made it from a book and the spine isn't strong enough but at least I did learn, by watching y'all about reinforcing the spine, next time I will use all the particulars where the spine I concerned. If you will be so kind as to do reinforcement of book spines for dummies, I will appreciate it. I love your videos and you have the most kind voice. Thank you for all you do... Patricia Robinson
Pat Robinson, I’ll try to get that done for you next time I do an old book journal! In the meantime, take some chipboard (like the back of a tablet), cut it to fit the book spine and glue it in. (I like Fabritac for this.). If you want to add another layer of strength you can put duct tape around your chipboard, so it’s on both sides of the chipboard. That will make a good strong spine. Maybe those couple of hints will tide you over until I can do a video. Hugs! ❤️
@@gayleagostinelli_ct Thank you Gayle and I will do that, I have gone through one bottle of the Fabricat, great glue but you better use it quickly cause when it gets thick it's difficult. You're an amazing crafter and I have watched all your videos that I can find. May you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and great New Year.
The one thing I can do pretty... I'm a tea paper dying woman. My paper is awesome
Your videos are beginning to demystify sewing machines for me...
Karen Taylor YEEESS! That's awesome! I really just do basic sewing in my journals...nothing fancy! ❤️

What type of needle do you use? Leather? Denim?
LadyJolynna I just use a needle for "heavier fabrics". ❤️
Ok. I think I have one. I'm terrified of flying broken needles. I got hit just under my eye with the tip of my needle a few years ago. Haven't sewn much since. But I think I'm gonna try this. Thanks for the video! ☺️
Hi I’m Sylvia fletcher. I love watching you. your such an inspiration to me. I’ve made a few journals and have presented them on UA-cam under my name if you’d like to watch. I have two followers so I’m just starting out. I also have an Etsy shop Sylvia’scottageshop. Just have my journals on there. Any way just thought I’d say hi
What weight paper do you use?
I don’t know the weight of the scrapbook paper, but it’s the thinner stuff from Hobby Lobby. ❤️
