The Hasselblad Foundation is pleased to announce that Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama is the recipient of the 2019 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography.
A photographer who works with a Ricoh GR, no? Not with a Nikon, a Pentax, a Rollei or a Leica, or even a Hasselblad, no! With a simple, little Ricoh GR! Hat down! You're a real Master !
Daido Moriyama has forever freed photographers from the “slavery” of equipment and the utopia of the perfect shot, in technical terms. I would never have taken up photography, if it was not his mantra “walk, get inspired, shoot”, that clicked in me to grab a cheap, point-and-shoot camera and go out.
Daido Moriyama is an artist who is not an artist in terms of mastering flawless technique. He is an artist in terms of freezing a moment and bringing his witnessing to us who want to view the beauty in the small events of his witnessing. Who want to try to see what he appreciates. He is an accomplished pedestrian with very quick visual reflexes. His art seems both fierce and gently compassionate. Like any truly good man he knows that a man’s greatest strength lies in his gentleness. There is no rage in his work, only love. This what we see. He really inspired me to shoot more freely and in a more expressive style rather than adhere to rigid sets of rules, after all Daido does what he wants! I love that.
Because of Moriyama and photographers like him I've created my own photobooks, for myself and others. Such a incredible influence, far beyond any so-called "influencer" on social media today.

Despite being a portrait and landscape photographer, I love to just walk and shoot whatever catches my eye, moves me, interests me. If you're sick of bland "street" photography go buy one of his books.
