ERA on a vehicle this light?!

I'll give them an "E" for effort. The 23mm is good, but that ERA looks pretty haphazard in its application.
On a slightly different note, most western militaries don't even have the BTR-60 series recognition cards anymore. Because it is obsolete.

An rws with a 23mm is a fine upgrade. The ERA on a hull that thin seems much less so. Simple spaced aluminum plate would be cheaper and less dangerous to the crew.

you've got to be able to make the plate and get the aluminum!!

ERA on top of armor as thin as that on a BTR. OK. Not sure what will do more damage - the RPG or the ERA. I can't help but feel cage armor would have been a better choice at similar weight. The 23mm is an interesting choice. As a hole-puncher it is no improvement over the 14.5 KPV, but it least it can fire exploding shells. Overall probably more useful.
_Thoughtful ergonomic design_ is a phrase I never thought I would hear associated with ANY Soviet era armored vehicle. The hyperbole is thick on this one.
Let's just call this what it is; Lipstick on a pig.

I think they did tested the effectiveness and the impact of the era blocks on the thin hull of the obsolete btr 60 before they installed it...

@@MFitz12 I don't think so, this upgrading package is considered minor if we exclude the turret and integrated modern sighting systems the rest of the upgrading could be implemented in front line field maintenance workshop's, some Russian army personnel equipping some of their thinly skin ifvs with explosive reactive armor blocks, I think the Iranian is placing these era blocks on steel sheet with suitable thickness to contain the effects of explosion the era blocks ...

@@LIONIQ-foxhound - As we see again and again in Ukraine, BMP's fitted with ERA get wrecked by their own ERA when it goes off.
      BTR armor is even thinner.
Ideally ERA should not be used in front of armor less than 40mm RHA, maybe 30mm if you want to stretch it. Otherwise significant damage to the vehicle being protected will result.

@@MFitz12 I agree with you regarding the minimum thickness of base armor needed for attaching era blocks, but what I say do you think this long circulated information missed the Iranian and do you think they just attached the blocks before studying it's improvement on the level of protection before adding those blocks, they have a good data on the explosive reactive armor from their long experience in fighting tanks of zionist entity alongside Hizb allah in Lebanon...
even the Russian didn't equipped their BTR82a with era blocks, only few bmp1 and it was by personnel initiatives ,but the Iranian did, so I assume they have good reason for doing so...
Once again, the era blocks can be installed on steel plates or composite armor with a thickness of 3 or 4 cm, but for an obsolete platform like this, metal cages remain a more economical solution, especially since the Iranian era the subject of discussion here may be an equivalent to the Soviet Kontakt-1 and this era designed to defeat munitions with shaped charged chemical warheads the commonly known HEAT...
but I could be wrong and the Iranian missed this point...

It has been stated, this vehicle was not intended to have k1. One hit on the era and the armored vehicles explodes. Not a good idea to put era on every vehicle. I'm guessing iran will slap era on a Toyota and call it modern...
