I think Slender is more terrifying while Silent Hill is more horrifying. Slender is more focusing on the feeling of anxiety and the unknown (assuming that you hadn't your experience with youtube before playing it for the first time)
I've never played Fatal Frame, but my dad did, and once, he and a few of his friends were playing it on the literal edge of their seats in the dark, and I put a soda box on my head (I was about 2 years old) and ran into the living room yelling, and they all fell down. I was the scariest little baby they have ever seen.
i don't know how you've been playing slender (if you've been playing properly then my hat goes of to you) but its meant to be played with headphones in a dark room and full volume. thats what makes it scary. also agree with you about silent hill
Dominic Shrimpton well, this generation of "horror" games are all jumpscares .... so yeah, slender is one of the top ones, but comparing with the old days when ppl really made scary videos games, now is rare u find a trully survival horror/horror game, just outlast i can find
Dominic Shrimpton I have to admit that I'm no one to judge slender because I have ligirofobia (Irrational fear to sudden loud sounds) so I'm not able to play any videogames with jumpscares, Slender to me is a nightmare, but in case that you are normal I don't see slender as a scary game, is easy to make jumpscares, but hard to make you feel so uncomfortable playing a videogame that after you play it you feel like someone could be in your house, for example, I can make a scary game, just like slenderman, you are in a room, and in a random moment will appear a screamer, the end. I know I'm exaggerating, but I think you know what I mean. But that's my opinion.
It's not jumpscares, it's more close to the see-don't-tell kind of horror. The slender man doesn't appear for a long time, and most of the game is just unnerving, forcing you into wide open or claustrophobic areas with no clue of where he is, and no way to kill him. It's pretty close to Silent Hill, and was made incredibly well for an indie game
Slender shouldn't be on that list at all in my opinion. Sure it's kinda scary at first but once you get to understand how it works, it's just not scary anymore. I hate it how everyone nowadays acts like it's the scariest thing ever when it's really not.
What? The way you formulate this doesn't make any sense dude. Either way, maybe it is less scary to me but I still think people are overreacting way too much about Slender. Everybody acts like it's the scariest thing when it's really not.
I agree with Fatal Frame. Its just soo f*cking terrifying and scary! Forced to look at the ghost face just to defeat it is soo scary. The atmosphere is just incredible. Japan is the best for making RPG's and Scary games. True scary games doesnt rely on jump scares at all the time. Yeah I'm talking about Slenderman
I was waiting the whole video to see if you'd mention Fatal Frame and if you hadn't I would've flipped haha. I'm glad it was #1. Shit messed up my childhood. Still creeps me out today! Rest of the list was very good as well.
SCP: Containment Breach is a pretty damn scary indie game. It's a FPS based around being trapped in an unground facility full of otherworldy monsters that cannot be stopped or avoided. You have to solve puzzles, navigate dark coridors and avoid getting killed by the monsters (SCPs) and the security task force sent in to kill you. Being as it was very popular last year, I'm surprised it didn't make this list. It's the scariest game I have ever played.
i think the game becomes TRULY SCARY if you actually know about The foundation website. If not it might look like a bunch of random monsters put together on a terrible graphics engine xD
Blergh I saw the 87B and looked it up. That's how I found the website, and suffice to say, I am a giant fan. I would love to see more games and possible tv show/movie. Some of the content there is pure gold. :D
I don't know about 12, but I played it over the course of a night from one evening until 5 the next morning. So maybe 8 or 9 hours? Not sure. It's not bad, no, but once you've mastered the controls and you can bend the rules a bit, you lose the feeling of helplessness. I was touching cloth when I saw the first naked burns victim in the wheelchair, though, I won't lie. Come to think, is it even explained why everyone's naked except for the central characters? I suppose it just got too slapstick for me after that bloke stuck a needle in my neck. I wouldn't deride you for being scared, though, like, if that's what you're into (into?). I'm scared of going asleep myself, and I know how silly that is.
Fatal Frame is the scariest part of my childhood. I can still clearly see my brother and I in a pitch black room huddled in front of the Xbox playing that game and getting so scared! XD But it's still one of my favorites.
i bet if this was made now people would say five nights at freddy's should be number one man that game is fucking stupid the silent hill playable teaser was scarier and that's not even the full game
MrAmericasbadboy Like I said, the more "intense" it got, the more I laughed at it just because it was so corny to me lol maybe if this were the 50's it would have passed me as scary :P
You have to play it at 3:00 in the morning (darkest part of night) all alone with headphones on full blast. Even if it is fake it creeps the hell outta you.
UnchartedCookies But no, that doesn't make it a good horror game if you have to be delirious from lack of sleep, and on the verge of going def from the shit music. Slender man is literally nothing but jump scares where a nonthreatening business man is just randomly seen standing somewhere. That isn't scary. Thats a cheep and poorly made game.
So many missed opportunities considering the addition of free games. SCP Containment Breach SCP 087-B LSD Grey (HL2 MOD) Yume Nikki Ao Oni Imscared These are some of the examples of games that don't need to be AAA titles to provide good scares. Some come from simple indie developers and are surprisingly accessible with many being free.
mattf1sh97 IMO Ravenholm wasn't scary at all, but that's just me. The Shalebridge Cradle from Thief 3 or whatever it was called was most definitely scary.
nah i knew the majority of these games before mark. Crooked man from a friend. Scp from Immortalhd, found 7 days while surfing the web....... The only game I havent heard of till mark was vanish
seriously these games such as slenderman and five nights and freddy's that rely mostly on jumpscares do not even count as scary. it's startles you, that's all it does.
But you are scared throughout the whole game because you know that somewhere a faceless ghoul is hunting for you in the dark forest and you know once it will pop up right in front of your face with some scarry shit scene, but you do not know when, and that is the point, it can appear anytime and you know it but don't know when.
5naf fails because of its rely on jumpscares which it is known to be the cheapest way to scare people (acording to horror fans). It also fails as a whole videogame, because it lacks on some aspects that every other videogame needs to have so that the audience is interested on what they are playing. Just answer this questions: is there a variety of gameplay? Is there a story line? Do you care about the characters? Is there any background music? And most importantly, IS THERE ANY OTHER FACTOR THAT SCARES YOU OTHER THAN JUMPSCARES? The right answer to this questions is NO. Even slenderman had more complexy on its game and it is overated. Expecting something scary as you say makes the game be boring, you are NOT supposed to wait or expect something to pop up. It is supposed to surprise you without you expecting it because that's what makes it scary. I bet that the only game you have played is this one, don't make a game like this be so over rated because it has "jumpscares" and it made you jump a couple of times.
Still 100% convinced that Silent Hill Shattering memories is the best scary game ever. Why? It’s about a man who took his daughter to the funfair but ends up in a car crash on the way home now the dad has to find his daughter. Going trough past memories of hers, photographing pics of shadowed ghosts and find out about them, the ending is also berilliant and the details added to the game is just absolutely stunning x. Worth giving a go
Outlast is scary, and I can't argue with that. But there's one problem; Too many jump-scares. Amnesia was just as scary without any jump-scares. Well...There was like....what?.. Two jump-scares in Amnesia? Well, it's fine if you don't agree with me. But Whisteblower was AMAZING.
Outlast is the creepiest game because: 1st person, locked in an insane asylum with mutated inmates, your light is a video camera with a limited battery.
10. Hypno's Lullaby 9. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 8. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem 7. Dead Space 6. Fatal Frame 5. SCP Containment Breach 4. Minecraft 3. Escape From Lavender Town 2. Amnesia: The Dark Descent 1. Silent Hill 2
so many people asking why certain games are not in the list "Published on Dec 21, 2013" unless the video creators could time travel there is no way a game made in 2014 is going to be in the list also jump scare is the laziest and cheapest horror related element it only works 2 or 3 times before you get used to it and in some cases only once
I gotta disagree with you on the jump scare point. Here's the thing about jump scares: yes, they're not the things that stick with you later on, but they are what makes tension in horror so frightening. If a game is all jump scares, I agree, it's not scary. However, when used infrequently and unexpectedly, the jump scare is what causes building tension to be so freaking scary. I agree that psychological horrors like Silent Hill and Amnesia will stick with the player longer and, as a result, be more scary, but jump scares absolutely have a place in horror, and isn't half as lazy or cheap as gibs and gore.
THANK you. People are just so saturated with data now, especially on the internet, they never bother to look at something deeper than its title. No one does RESEARCH anymore. (Hasty Generalization, ahoy!)
Ali Irfan You are correct that the jump scare itself is merely startling, and a game that is only jump scares can become stale very quickly. However, the startling nature of jump scares will often lead people to become more nervous. For instance, I was playing a game with my friends once (it was an awful indie title from indiedb, I can't remember which one). The game started out innocent enough without any jump scares or any scares at all for that matter, then we opened a door and there was a jump scare that was very startling (as you mentioned jump scares are). After that, doors became a point of fear because of the dread of being startled again. Like I said, when used well, jump scares can inspire fear. Although they are not the direct cause of fear themselves, they can make seemingly not scary actions, like opening a door for instance, into a nerve-wracking feat.
I remember playing Condemned and I was slept under the covers! There is a section in a mall and the store's mannequins would pursue you when you're not looking.
Elijahchu No it didn't. It came out in 2013 in the fall if not earlier, so it could make the list if the watchmojo people whats known as, any creative intelligence whatsoever
Silent hill 2 should be WAY more up there. It was a game that i dont even think had ONE jump scare and completely had atmosphere to scare u, followed by a great story. Best horror game of all time in my opinion.
Joseph Duncan I never said silent hill was the best scary game (although I place it among the best) ,the same goes to slenderman, but the reason silent hill 2 worked so well is because the game use psychological fear a great story and not to mention a fantastic soundtrack, (such as laura's theme, promise, The Darkness That Lurks in Our Mind, betrayal etc) to build up a great atmosphere I respect opinions, but saying slenderman is better than silent hill....no... just no
Slender is the LEAST scary game I've ever played, sure the first time you die and get the white static screen it's a shocker, but EVERY time after it's just pathetic...
I know. It took me a few years (since 2013) to get over my fear of Slender. But, I now sleep with the light on. Wow, Toonami! Thanks a lot for scaring me! THANK YOU!
That's the beauty of it though :'), god i remember being like 14 and seeing my uncle play it i was scared shit... ironic seen as one of my favorite game genres to play now is Horror :') just sucks that steam doesn't sell any Silent Hill games... well apart from Homecoming... but i am not paying 15 pounds for that
Aidan Powell Personally, I'd have put SH1 on this instead of 2 (it's my favourite game of all time) but to have Slender above any of the first 3 Silent Hills is a joke.
Warning, if you go into the comments your brain will melt of edgy little kids who piss their pants over FNAF, or salty people who say that other games aren't there. You have been warned.
Also I would have loved to see Everblue 2 since this is not all horror games. Everblue is just so scary because the deeper you go the darker it gets and you never know when a place has sharks. That game makes diving seem truly horrifying and I dont even think they did that on purpose. Plus at the end of the game you have to dive in a scary black well where you will probably get lost and die.
if i actually remember correctly fatal frame had a warning label on the back of its case saying do not play this game alone in a dark room. i was also told by a few people this game actually put some people in the nut house and is banned in some countries

Outlast was released in September 2013. Watchmojo uploaded this in December 2013.
I didn't know when out last was released
Andrew Amenn fnaf is just cheap jumpscares
Slender above Silent Hill 2?! I've lost faith in humanity
Actually, Silent Hill didn't scare me at all, if we go on quality, obviously SH2 is above.
+Dany Sora P.T silent hills is scary :/
Not so much, used to play t because of the story
This list is obviously an opinion not a fact
I think Slender is more terrifying while Silent Hill is more horrifying.
Slender is more focusing on the feeling of anxiety and the unknown (assuming that you hadn't your experience with youtube before playing it for the first time)
It's nearly Christmas, guys! Let's have a Hallowe'en episode!
"Alan Wake" is totally missing in this list...not for the terror but the atmosphere!
I've never played Fatal Frame, but my dad did, and once, he and a few of his friends were playing it on the literal edge of their seats in the dark, and I put a soda box on my head (I was about 2 years old) and ran into the living room yelling, and they all fell down. it is just a demo but PT deserve to be on a 2016 list with Five Nights at Freddys, Outlast and Hannah Montana : the game
Omg yes lololol
Hannah Montana the game is the scariest game in existence
I agree with the Outlast

Seems legit
Honestly though.
Slender shouldn't be on that list at all in my opinion. Sure it's kinda scary at first but once you get to understand how it works, it's just not scary anymore. I hate it how everyone nowadays acts like it's the scariest thing ever when it's really not.

To them its scary, But i do not think its scary as well
Xander_The_Assassin Never said they weren't allowed to be scared of it lol. All i'm saying is that it's getting exaggerated.
Well yeah but i never Said you said They weren't allowed

did you alredy play call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth? its more scary that i can say
well, if you think japan is best at rpgs, 1 word, Skyrim
I would call SlenderMan startling, not scary.
Condemned is one of the most awesome, thrilling and terrifying games ever made, I was left shaking after some missions. An absolute classic.
The original Silent Hill was the game that disturbed me the most
+Hellchen317 word
Especially the alley way nightmare scene
I was waiting the whole video to see if you'd mention Fatal Frame and if you hadn't I would've flipped haha. I'm glad it was #1. Shit messed up my childhood. Still creeps me out today! Rest of the list was very good as well.

Fnaf should still be here.
It doesn't scare me anymore but I love it. I know many who live it and it scared the crap out if em.
This video is from 5 years ago, just saying.
Umm are you even a horror fan or just a kid who watch youtubers scream as they play Granny?
Yall argueing over a 2 year old comment
Slenderman could have easily been top it was a simply made game but very scary and intriguing.. As for Silent Hill 2 that's a classic right there..
Slenderman isn't scary.
Am I the only one who thinks Slender isn't that scary? I mean as old as it is, and knowing its origins, I'm not sure why anyone is.
Im with you
me too
It really isnt
Rather, it's not scary anymore
me and my friends laugh when we played slender

Why does everything come out in September! that's the month of my birthday!
your soo right
Outlast is the new #1
It is just so disturbing and scary.
For the first hour, maybe. For the twelve hours after that it's repetetive.
RimboBobo 12? How did you make it last so much? It aint a bad game, but I believe that the hype is quite strong with it
Outlast is my number 1 scariest game, definitely.

Christial Jack Ik were is it
top 10 urban legends sounds pretty cool...
they already did that
Slender makes it to the list, higher than SILENT HILL 2, and Outlast isn't even mentioned. Smh.
Ravyn James outlast wasn't out when this list was made
Ohhhh. Whoops xD
If this list was updated, I would fully expect Alien Isolation and Outlast to be on here. And who knows. RE7 might be the ultimate horror game
Ravyn James hvgffdgdgdgu
Ravyn James IKR about outlast
Slender is like elmo compared to Silent Hill...
jumpscare fail at the end lolol XD
theres many games that scared me, Outlast, The Calling, The Crooked Man, Amoung the Sleep, Paranormal Activity, and many more.
Among the Sleep probably would have been on this list had it not been released six months after this video.
alright, and what about Outlast?
I have no idea. I only learned of Among the Sleep a few hours ago when I saw H20Delirious ( #freeadvertising ) play a run through of the game.
Omg I love him :D
you should watch wowcrendor and Jesse Cox play Outlast, its awesome cx
I've always thought "Siren" was the scariest
10. Hypno's Lullaby
9. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
8. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
7. Dead Space
6. Fatal Frame
5. SCP Containment Breach
4. Minecraft
3. Escape From Lavender Town
2. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
1. Silent Hill 2
so im not the only one who gets scared playing minecraft?
There's something wrong with you if you think Zelda and Minecraft are scary.
Luke Hoffman ony when i hear the music if herobrine
Luke Hoffman
Nope :)
Freddy Krueger
There's something wrong with you if you think they aren't scary.
so many people asking why certain games are not in the list
"Published on Dec 21, 2013"
unless the video creators could time travel there is no way a game made in 2014 is going to be in the list
also jump scare is the laziest and cheapest horror related element
it only works 2 or 3 times before you get used to it and in some cases only once
THANK YOU! I agree with you.
***** Jump scares are not scary. They startle you rather than scare you, like when someone comes up to you from behind and says 'boo.'
It's 2014, why are you guys still not uploading in HD?
1:46 no one is holding the knife how funny 😁😝😁
I screwed up the ending because I wasn't put up as number 1
Lol sorry slendy, maybe next time.
You can do it mr.slendy guy who makes people poop their pants':)
#2 Amnesia
#1 fatal Frame
#0 Slender Man
0 is greater than 1
***** *you're
Where is Outlast and The last of us?
Outlast was made in 2013 and this video was made in 2012
The last of us was a good game with a good story, but not at all scary.
Filipe Jung Both games were already released before the making of this video.
Last of Us, scary? How? When? It's a fan-f***ing-tastic game and I love it to death don't get me wrong, but how was it scary?
PikaLink91 I have no idea bro btw. Go Pewds
WHY IS SLENDER NUMBER 3 !?
ya?!
sorry to say it but slender isn't that bad :/
Yeah, it isn't scary. I never got the allure of it.
never tried it but saw people playing it
AmandaDragoness115 It may not be a bad game but it's not exactly scary. It makes you jump the first few times and that's about it.
Those clips don't make Amnesia look scary, but believe me, it is absolutely terrifying.
That Slenderman cut off tho
I can't believe Outlast didn't even make it to the honorable mentions list!
same as f.e.a.r 3
I remember playing Condemned and I was slept under the covers! There is a section in a mall and the store's mannequins would pursue you when you're not looking.
Outlast should at least be an honorable mention.
Outlast wasn't that scary. Too many jump scares and enemy encounters. After a while the game just became repetitive and boring.
I disagree. I feel it should have at least been mentioned
I think Outlast or Outlast: Whistleblower could have made it onto that list.
I think so too
A DLC is not a separate game.
>> O-U-T-L-A-S-T
Me too :(
This came out before outlast
im not gonna lie i didn't find that really scary compared to others on this list
Amnesia is still the most horrifying game on the list.
Elijahchu No it didn't. It came out in 2013 in the fall if not earlier, so it could make the list if the watchmojo people whats known as, any creative intelligence whatsoever
and Outlast? Wheres my Outlast?
Agree
That's in the other one. They made another top ten for scary games and Outlast was like #2.
Outlast SHOULD be on here
Well, Outlast came out in 2013.....
Xenogenesis - pg3d,Jurassic world,roblox Mobile Lol
WatchMojo should do: Another Top 10 Scary Video Games since FNAF came out
ya right!and outlast too!
They should wait until silent hills comes out before they remake this one because I have a feeling it would be somewhere on the top of the list.
YA RIGHT DUDEV YOUR RIGHT!
Fox'y the Pirate Fox see you in FNAF 2 Anyways im not scary to you nad thas for me easy to not let you enter to my office Foxy!, but yeah he he...
:3
Slender was scary? Wow. And no Outlast?
Slender isn't scary at all. Only the music is. And after 2 times of playing, the music aint scary anymore either.
Yeah haha slender ain't that scary and also
Jumpscares are for wussies
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that Outlast came out AFTER they put this video up.
I really thought it would be on the list too
I was like "It's gotta be #1 since they haven't even put it on the list or honorable mentions." Nope
Actually outlast came out in september
***** Dat game seriously brings all the boys the yard.
I'm not sure what that entitles.
Silent hill 2 should be WAY more up there. It was a game that i dont even think had ONE jump scare and completely had atmosphere to scare u, followed by a great story. Best horror game of all time in my opinion.
Can you try to make a video called "Top 10 scariest creepypastas?:3"-
HOLY SHIT. THAT ENDING. DAMMIT. I knew i shouldn't have watched the ending like always. GODAMMIT.
Outlast should have been No.1 on the list, it is the scariest game i have played in my life.
no its not
Judson Gann
Lol. So it's not the scariest game he's played in his life?
if you like system shock 2, then you should play Soma, that game is brilliant
I'm sorry but, are you serious? You put Slender the eight pages over Silent Hill 2?!?!? Brugh..
I know right slenderman isn't even scary ⌐_⌐
This isn't THE BEST SCARY GAMES.
John Hisic I know, but slender is no where near as scary as SH2
Joseph Duncan I never said silent hill was the best scary game (although I place it among the best) ,the same goes to slenderman, but the reason silent hill 2 worked so well is because the game use psychological fear a great story and not to mention a fantastic soundtrack, (such as laura's theme, promise, The Darkness That Lurks in Our Mind, betrayal etc) to build up a great atmosphere I respect opinions, but saying slenderman is better than silent hill....no... just no
carmen a. gonzalez rios You are completely right.
Slender is the LEAST scary game I've ever played, sure the first time you die and get the white static screen it's a shocker, but EVERY time after it's just pathetic...
I agree with you. But I nevered played the game. Even though I love scary stuff, the only one I hate is SLENDER, DANG IT!!!!
I recommend you never play it, it really is over rated :p
The sequel is pretty scary though.
I know. It took me a few years (since 2013) to get over my fear of Slender. But, I now sleep with the light on. Wow, Toonami! Thanks a lot for scaring me! THANK YOU!
***** Yeah! Also, he's even worst than Dark Konoha or Kuroha Outer Science!
and annoying
Slender is the definition of what is wrong with modern horror genre. It's not about story, it's about loud noises
ironically it's still better than most horror games nowadays
Just getting ready for October! Tis the season to watch everything scary and play (and replay) all the old scary games. Woot!
1. Outlast. 100% all the way
It took my friend and I FOREVER to even make it down the mountain in Silent Hill 2.
*at the start of the game.
That's the beauty of it though :'), god i remember being like 14 and seeing my uncle play it i was scared shit... ironic seen as one of my favorite game genres to play now is Horror :') just sucks that steam doesn't sell any Silent Hill games... well apart from Homecoming... but i am not paying 15 pounds for that
Yea, the silent hill games are a bit difficult. Honestly though I love silent hill. It's my fav horror franchise. It's really creepy.
Aidan Powell Personally, I'd have put SH1 on this instead of 2 (it's my favourite game of all time) but to have Slender above any of the first 3 Silent Hills is a joke.
"Slender: The Eight Pages" isn't scary to me
Okay but remember this list wasnt made for you
yeah not for me ether exept when there is a JUMP SCARE RIGT AT THE END OF THE VIDEO, DAMMIT!
This video came out 10 years ago the only reason i am here is because i was wondering whats the scariest horror game😭😭😭
Yeah Outlast should be #1, no contest
Warning, if you go into the comments your brain will melt of edgy little kids who piss their pants over FNAF, or salty people who say that other games aren't there. You have been warned.
Blanks Blood I think I've read this warning a little too late.
Michael Bosman May your soul rest in peace.
Michael Bosman (plays sad music on violin)
The prophecy was true!
or the tipical someone to point out something to make then feel different .
7:30
Bastard you scared the hell out of me...
Plus you know when a shark is near by when the scary shark music starts playing and it's the stuff of nightmares.
I love how 70% of the comment section is like "OMG WHER EIS FNAFF OGMM ?!?!?!?!?!?"
Gotta love this comment section
ikr so cancer
Agreed. "omfg im 8 fnafff iz s0 scurry uhuh where dafuq iz ittttttt"

Belpherith lolwut
fnaf is gay but ur a weeb i play call of duty

Anything with spiders involves makes me pee my pants.
Involved* auto correct
Megan O'Brien I have arachnophobia so I have a fear of spiders
Megan O'Brien I agree...
I luv spiders.
Megan O'Brien Wait so you're scared at Minecraft XD
if i actually remember correctly fatal frame had a warning label on the back of its case saying do not play this game alone in a dark room. i was also told by a few people this game actually put some people in the nut house and is banned in some countries
"Slenderman"
WatchMojo pls
Outlast was scarier than all these games except it came out later.
it came out before this was made
Cameron Potter even if it did came out outlast is nothing compared to fatal frame-silent hill-forbidden siren..
BadAssMacmillan I disagree but whatever all these games other than slender are scary
LUIGI'S MANSION!!! lol just kidding
Yeah
I love horror. Books, movies, novels, games etc. But nothing was as satisfying as the experience of Silent Hill 2....
7:30 THIS IS WHY I HAVE TRUST ISSUES
HOLY FUCK!!! damn it! >_
