  • The II V I is maybe the most essential chord progression in jazz music.
    Here I explain how to play it with the idiomatic voicings of the jazz manouche.

    Sven, you formed the sound of our guitar-duo by this long ago. I recall you doing this on an "all of me"-video, and my mind was blown! Since then my 2-5 have never been the same, and the "5" (#5) chord is so mysterious that me and my friends have had lots of interesting discussions about whats happening. In the end, gypsyjazz is so rewarding, not being an academic skill but more like a feeling! Yeah!
    The run you do at about 6:07 have stuck to me ever since you showed it in the j'attendrai-video. I guess I've watched and learned so much from you that it comes naturally fingered. It's a relaxing feeling to do and it sounds so cool!
    The thing I keep struggling with is the right hand technique. You did videos on that too, and my partner in crime says I'm there, but the consistency of your groove.. guess I just have to rehearse some more! The 2-4 beat is muted but fretted, loud but not doing the polka-ish thing.. thanks for the inspiration!

    I love your lessons Sven! Thanks so much for posting these, you are quickly becoming one of my favorite teachers here on youtube. I've been practicing some of these voicings a lot from your "All of Me" lesson video and they are definitely getting easier. At first, those multiple notes with one finger type chords were super challenging but now they are getting easier and ringing nicer too.

    Being new to Gypsy Guitar can you tell me the model guitar?

  • @brcic5409
    @brcic5409 Рік тому

    Hi, can I please ask something. I see that you are able to put the thumb around the neck of the guitar, and 'reach' the index finger, and can go beyond that, even further like 1 cm or so. - So was this possible for you from start or did you practice it? I tried it, but my hand is too short (with or without chord) - thank you. or say - so, I cannot play just any of the thumb chords, and it's not possible to dim the sound for just any chord .. what do other players do? buy a special guitar with a slimmer neck?

    Hi Sven. A little off topic but how do you amplify this guitar? I have a k & k pu installed in my AltamiraDhole but that pu gives me a very boomy sound. It also feedbacks when you just look at it. Thanks in advance. Friendly regards Ruud Pennings Den Haag

    • @SvenJungbeck

      These mics are just for a verx tiny bit of sound. The main volume should come from a bridge pick up like the big tone pick up. When you raise the sound hole mic just a little too much, it always feeds back like hell.
      The best modeler to my mind is the
      Audio sprocket Tonedexter plus AER Amp.
      I don't even use my mic anymore!

    Hello sven. When i do the D6/9 it sounds terrible, the high E especially is ringing horribly and the chord doesn t sound like D at all. What can i do to improve it?

    • @SvenJungbeck
      @SvenJungbeck  3 роки тому +1

      Probably you have problems with the middle finger while bending the index on f# and b? These gypsy jazz chords are very hard in the beginning. Easy way is leaving out b and E string and playing ring (E) little finger (A string) index D string and ringfinger on G string!
      Robin Nolan sometimes uses this voicing.

  • @nylophone5730

    Hey Sven, could you please give some technique tips on how to comfortably play that first E min7 chord? I find I have to put my thumb low on the neck and bend my wrist at a bit of an angle. It looks much more comfortable the way you play it. P.S. thanks for all the vids

    • @SvenJungbeck
      @SvenJungbeck  3 роки тому +2

      That's a difficult point, some people have this "bending the wrist problem" with bar chords as well. It's hard to tell for I don't see you.
      What about a lesson. Not that I want to sell you one if you don't need it, but I think it could help.

      @@SvenJungbeck Hi again Sven. I'm sure you could help. I'm afraid that I'm an out of work musician at the moment (though not anywhere near your skill level), so a bit strapped for cash at the moment. I've been sitting at home all day jamming over your backing tracks for the last month. No gigs or teaching happening where I am (Ireland). Thanks again for all the great content and for offering to give a lesson. I recommend your channel to anyone I know even vaguely interested in jazz

    Hello. On the A7b9. If you were to write that on a chart, and the bass player plays an A, would that create too much dissonance?
