My favorite MRE when i was in the Army was beef stew, which came with a vanilla cake, fruit punch mix, chocolate covered raisins and pretzel sticks. It also came with coffee, creamer, sugar, utensils, TP, alcohol wipes, gum and toothpicks. Honestly the most filling MRE.

I remember a dude in my unit in Iraq writing “Combat Tested Government Appruved” (no that’s how he spelled it) on his helmet cover. He was an intelligence analyst, never left the FOB or dodged a mortar. As punishment, first sergeant made him wear it that way.

    • @Deridus

@@GlurglePop Weird that someone would shoot the gate at a base on purpose. Someone overlooking the base would be much better off if no one knew he was there. Unless that was an attempt at intimidation to warn not to leave the base. Something that doesn't work too well on infantry types. 😄

Blood wings absolutely happen. I was an Airborne Combat Engineer, completing in Oct 2008. After our 5th jump, completing Airborne school. The Cadre pin your jump wings during the official ceremony. Then, turn a blind eye to unofficial and against regulation to getting your blood wings. Where the backs of the Airborne wings badge are removed and punched into your chest. It is absolutely a right of passage. And if you didn't get your blood wings in Airborne school and you are assigned to an Airborne unit. You will get your blood wings from your new unit, most likely.

As I lay in the mud, and the guts and the blood, and I wept as his body grew colder. I called for my mother, but she never came, but it wasn't my fault, and I wasn't to blame. I can confirm that getting pinned and blood striping have been COMPLETELY eliminated in the Marine Corps. I have NEVER seen such a gruesome and heinous act, and am appalled that you would suggest any such thing happens. I don't have any recollection nor scars in my chest and collar from my various rank insignias... /S

COMPLETELY? I've seen it with my own eyeballs in the army, so it must still exist in the marine corps, not only that but I have seen the scars and heard the tales from marine friends. Some opt to 1 inch punch the rank patches as well.

When you get rid off facial hair like beards, then you don't need to worry about getting dirty around your mouth when you eat since you have then just clean skin to wipe off the face. You save then on water and on supplies.

If a soldier has all this time to do this hygiene, they are blessed to be on a major base or away from active combat. Soldiers don't have time for this when they are actively engaged with an enemy.

I’m not sure either of those assumptions is correct. Considering the tech and lifestyles of that era, actual uniforms would have been limited and uncommon. Considering that Alexander was going against the Persians, and knowing that they all wore beards, he might have ordered his troops to shave in order to lessens the likelihood of “friendly fire” attacks during the chaos of battle.
“Stab the guys with the beards, don’t stab the guys without the beards.”
Grabbing beards in a fight is a real thing. So is grabbing long hair. I know…I once grabbed the long hair of a large man who attacked me and grabbing his hair enabled me to get him into a rear naked choke (no, this wasn’t during a sport fight, it was a street fight).
