The irony of John Terry suggesting that someone should own what they have said.
In his interview, Terry pointed out when they were youngsters they had to make coffees, run baths etc for the senior players. It’s about earning your stripes within a club. It’s something we are losing
Regardless he should not be undermining and disrespecting the manager, no wonder AVB failed at the club. Terrys arrogance didn’t benefit the team
Doesnt surprise me John Terry wants people to run him baths and make him coffee. Horrible guy. Ba k in the day they used to get kids to scrub the boots etc. Football stuff.
@@mrahman2897 AVB should have realised that he was going to lose that battle-as Simon says. The dressing room at the time had big characters
@@Philpot1992 that was normal for youth players though
@@Philpot1992if you listened to the podcast Terry himself done it for vialli ,it's how all the youth players came through ,until the stupid academys where they are paid big money and do no jobs
That's a fight you would've lost.
Roman Abramovich had some special relationship with those senior players. He'd choose them over any manager LOL
Terry and Lampard could kill someone he would shake there hands
And he will have a massive payout for AVB.
Because those players will be left behind and potentially sold.
Good on O'Neil to call out Terry on that stupid airplane story. Sounded like the senior players were being belligerent
The argument JT is saying is you don’t work this hard to get the same rewards as youth players… youth players need to earn the first team treatment, not get treated it. JT wasn’t demanding he was reminding AVB to keep the youth hungry and earn the rewards
Even if JT is right he shouldn't undermine the managers authority, if AVB isn't in control then he won't have the respect of the dressing room. And if he doesn't have that, bad results follow. And thats exactly what happened
A wise mgr won't put himself in that situation in the first place...
@Jack-dv6oi it was literally AVB's first job. Terry knew Chelsea inside out and already had the experience of better management under Mourinho.
AVB was too arrogant, and look how it worked out. John Terry was right and one stayed and had a lot more success than the other. Guess who?
Even if that’s what he thought, it’s none of his business. AVB was making a point.
@@frasierfreak92 What he was thinking is that the youngsters ain´t flying 1st class while the senior players fly economy.
Its a principle! how are so many people are confused about this.
Does not matter that he is manager, boss or god himself is irrelevant you stick to principals.
Martins voice man he needs to bring out a book of bedtime stories its proper soothing 😂
😂😂
You just don't put academy youngsters in first class while the experienced world class players are left to sit in economy, it's terrible management, fails to make any point. Where is AVB now if he was that good?
He is the President of FC Porto.
@@shellshocktrophies2975 that means nothing when it comes to being a good manager.
@nigelmcgiver2275 hear it again, he put senior players in economy
NZ rugby team has senior players clean up the changing room. Guys with 100 caps. The winningest team in history.
@@frankford1115 different sport, different part of the world, different practices. The PL culture (most expensive league) is different. Manager tried to do a Coach Carter but without any real accolades or trophies to back up his CV.
AVB came in with arrogance, thinking he was the next Mourinho, and wanted to cast aside the experienced spine of the team. It was hard to find a player in that squad who was not serious captain material. I don't think there's ever been a squad with more captains in it. They did manage themselves a lot, and their attitude was justified when they went on to win the FA Cup and UCL two or three months after AVB was sacked, and replaced by a P.E. teacher (with all due love and respect to the legend Di Matteo). Big fan of Martin, but he's never had a dressing room as mentally strong as that in his career. He can't relate to the context of the situation.
@nigelmcgiver2275 You are probably still of school-going age to have so little life experience as to not understand what I wrote.
@nigelmcgiver2275 then think like one!
@@Mal_Freeman0451 You can argue that a mentally strong dressing room wouldn't throw tantrums because of being asked to fly in standard seats. But yeah, Putting youth players in is a very weird message.
Speaking of Martin O'Neill, people forget that he was a very good footballer himself and part of an extremely strong side.
@@richardsmith9615 I don't forget what Martin has done as a player. I also remember the pinnacle of his managerial career being stints at Celtic, Villa and Leciester. Playing with great players and managing great players are very different things.
John Terry, a real man of integrity 🤣🤣
With the amount of SLAMMING they do on this show, I’m surprised that desk is still in one piece
Still waiting for Simon to ask Terry about Wayne Bridge on that podcast
😂😂😂😂😂 that was never going to happen… needs to get to the Ferdinand questions first
A grown adult. Sleeping with a ex team mates ex gf, who was also single. Its a non story
@@ollieyoung Which of them were married?
AVB tried to be clever and looked stupid
Maybe so, but JT shouldn’t have undermined him so openly in front of all the players. He should have spoken with him privately. He probably felt the senior players were all working against him from then on.
If you’re AVB and you make that decision, you have to have the balls to stick to it.
He didn’t, and it was just the first of many occasions he showed his poor man management.
Villas Boas was a horrific manager and id argue Solari was better than him. Did just as bad at Spurs. Massive ego who thought he was Guardiola 2.0
Guardiola 1.0 was undermined too.
Etoo said "who tf is he to tell me how to play?"
We all know Pep went onto become the greatest of his era.
Moral of the story: He is your manager. Do as you're told.
@@DirtyJamesUK AVB was a posh boy that came from a rich family and always got what he wanted. His privileged background made him believe he was good enough but that doesn't work in football management.
@@sumairaftab8284 he won the Portuguese league & Europa League in his first & only season at FC Porto.....
@@sumairaftab8284 he was Mourinhos assistant at Porto, Chelsea & Inter Milan.
Was AVB a figment of my imagination? I suddenly got Liverpool CHAD flashbacks. Shiver! I wonder where they all are now.
Context is everything - what O'Neill says about authority and being led is what John Terry describes himself and the other players doing for Mourinho in that interview. Listen to the full conversation. This is about AVB making a mess of things and the players knowing their value and what needs to be worked for. Where did AVB go after this? Nowhere. They were right
Spot on 👌🏽
He's president of Porto, Terry and Lampard can't get a job and Abramovich is dodging prison.
@@ktkee7161foolish people think they know more than those in the inside
Glad someone appreciates context 🙄
Terry ran behind Jose like a lap dog BECAUSE he wasn't a star yet.
Became a star and refused to take his manager's instructions.
A manager is a manager whether you agree with them or not.
But to use your star player standing along with other star players to overrule the manager in his face, amd force him to acquiesce is known as "player power".
Player power is seen as one of the evils of modern football.
Simon is so modest he doesnt like to blow hes own trumpet. Especially wen jim white is there to blow him off😂😂
I remember the irish team going to world cup , flying to saipan and the FAI bigwigs flew buisness class and the players in economy, roy keane went nuts abt it, part of the big fall out
Disagree...AVB came with the agenda to kick off the seniors rather than work with them..thr Airplane fiasco should never have happened had Avb reasoned and aligned the seniors before hand...
He was given that job by Abramovich! But Terry won't criticise a billionaire.
AVB was making the point that all players are equal. So they mixed up who was in first class and not on the plane on each leg. It wasn't just young players and senior players, it just happened that on leg one Chalaboah and McEchran were in first and they three "managers" were at the back. Terry, being Terry, whinged and undermined the manager. That Chelsea team should have been like City now with long term dominance, but with Terry etc undermining managers they had no chance.
@@daviddeane Don't be silly lad they were the most successful English club for many years during that time frame.
Say what you like about Terry have your opinion on him if you dislike him that's fine but the final sentence simply isn't true.
@@daviddeane they won the CL that year with di Matteo.. so somewhere down the line , you have to pin this on AVb for disrupting the harmony
@@DTM93 it sounds exactly like undermining the manager to me. I can't see any other angle.
He made sure he was supported by other stars instead of just getting on with it and being humble.
When Rooney went to DC United he had to clean his own boots like all the other players. He didn't kick off or act the diva. He cleaned his own boots for the first time since being a youth player.
If you are STILL wondering why Terry will NEVER become a manager, there’s an insight… from the man himself
Love Martin , what a guy , be great to have a couple of pints with him
Great Leaders do not backstab their manager. No wonder he failed to win anything with england, was obviously too egoistic to actually pull in the same direction as everyone else.
They should’ve asked Martin if he would have done what AVB did and put his senior players in economy with the young players in first class?
They did, he said he wouldn't have picked that fight
That's EXACTLY the real moral of the story. If you're trying to say "no one is bigger, then why nt everyone in coach (including himself)"? Clearly he was trying to demean players. Wrong fight, wrong manager, right pink slip!
You didn't listen?
Why though? Am I missing your point?
I agree with JT
Imagine telling Roy Keane or Tony Adams the youth team are sitting in first class while they are in economy
What a pairing Jordan and Terry both up their own asses
AVB losing the dressing room = AVB gets sacked and Di Matteo takes over = Chelsea FC winning the UEFA Champions League in 2012 = JT is a genius
John Terry caused similar problems for England. Trying to get this friends selected and other players dropped.
Why does every TalkSport title start with "someone SLAMS someone". Hire a adult to write the content titles, does not come across professional at all.
Welcome to the clickbait formula
Because it’s a simpleton trying to kid simpletons.

JT was right. Manager is just is a title but respect is earned. These players deserved respect.
AVB was like a primary school PE teacher managing Chelsea
I agree completely as Terry and Lampard were way above their station...they both thought that they were the club
As long they back up their hubris with results,I don't see any problem with that
John Terry calling out disrespect 😂😂🤣😅🤣🤣 you couldn't make it up! Priceless! 🤣🤣😅🤣🤣
What seems to be overlooked is that Posta was appointed late in the pre-season and had only a short period to get a handle on his squad and develope the teams playing style, successfully promoting and developing a mostly young and inexperienced squad.
Shows how good a manager Jose was in handling Terry and the dressing t
Youth players need to earn the opportunity to sit in first class. That’s the problem with the current generation of young players. They swam around in sports cars and designer gear without having proved themselves on the pitch. JT is spot on here and AVB massively got it wrong! JT came through the ranks at Chelsea scrubbing first team player’s boots and making cups of tea for Vialli. That shows the difference 👌
You don't think he had a reason or lesson for the younger players by doing this
Leaving them at the airport would have made the players look like fools. Grab a seat and sit down or stay behind like spoilt brats, letting your club down. JT thinks hes bigger than the club.
Without JT , lampard and drogba that time the flight would have not left that airport, AVB would be sacked before they landed ,
You also know this is JTs ego. He would have cried to Abramovich about his " treatment"
Lol if AVB or any manager tried to do this they would land in Hong Kong unemployed
Senior players lead the dressing room not the manager, Ferguson knew that
Anyone who saying Terry isnt in the right has never been in football. There is way to make a statement. Try getting the senior pros onside and it will all fall into place.
Andre Villas Boas is the only reason Graham Potter isnt the worst Chelsea manager of all time.
AVB came in with plans to be the next Mourinho, he ended up the most pituful thing instead; the only Andre Villas Boas.
I just love MON... he gave my club some wonderful years (villa) will always have a soft spot for him... great speaker
10:07 That Robbie Keane transfer was ridiculous.. 20mil! Keane couldn't hit a moving ball. The first time I took notice of Levy and his business acumen. How Keane dares to turn up for Legend games is beyonder..
John Terry just showed why he will never be a manager. Club chairman will look at Terry said, will avoid him.
Listen to all these wannabe football managers saying you shouldn't do this or that 🤣
If Fergie was managing Terry...he'd have sat where he was told or he'd have been on Ryanair flight out of Manchester.....never to return
Fergie won’t put youth players in first class
Fergie (and Keane) was the biggest champion of meritocracy. This idea would never have crossed his mind
That’s why he bullied Ferguson’s United all the time with Jose.. great logic numpty
Fergy tried 4 months trying to sign Terry 😂😂 f off going chelsea 😂😂
@@Shadedgray Well.. unless they're Paul Scholes haha.
Sorry Stylian you're on your own 😅
Sounds like a major error by the manager, how do you not recognize that seating young players ahead of veterans is going to create issues. He picked the wrong situation to prove a point.
Well said O'Neil, Terry is clearly a poor human being and he consistently proves that with his actions
Jim absolutely loves Martin telling stories. Couple of top Celtic ment together!
AVB made the mistake of not getting the captains or core of the team onside before even going to the squad day to day
He should've binned them all off. Lampard and Drogba were finished by this point and Terry was a parasite who would put himself before the team every day of the week
I'm no Chelsea guy, far from it in fact. But did they not go on to win the champions league that season? With those 'finished' players??
Turn it in u div
What even is this comment? Terry is a parasite then what is Van Djik a flea because let tell you now a lot of legends in the game will never touch the records Chech, Terry and Carvalho set 15 goals conceded in a season.
Only Arsenal are even with touching distance with David Seaman, Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Martin Keown. No one else Knows what its like to concede under 20 goals in a season.
@@bicks82 yeah and they finished sixth in the league about 25 points off the top

he's comparing Gareth Barry to John Terry and the backing he had
No way you can allow youngers in first class on 13 hour plane flight whilst the stars are in economy
@nigelmcgiver2275 Terry literally said he was sat in Economy... make up your own head canon elsewhere guy
Why? AVB was making a point that he wanted the seniors to treat the academy players as peers, not slaves like they were doing.
@@frasierfreak92 He didn't make it well enough, to push that point they would have all flew in first class together
After listening to JT talk about his defiance of some coaches, I realised then that’s prob why he hasn’t had full team coach jobs. It portrays him as a risky character to coach. If he does get a big coaching job, karma will get him back and players will defy him eventually.
Cap 🧢
Jt was saying he could of gone to utd imagine jt telling fergie how its going to go 😂😂
If he wanted to put everyone into their place, just put them all into economy.
Brian Clough would have walked off the plane, in handcuffs after attacking the players.
AVB WASN'T THE MANAGER WE NEEDED AT THE TIME HE CAME, HE OPTIONED TO SIDELINE ALL HIS EXPERIENCE PLAYERS AND HIS THE spine of that dressing room. THE CHARACTER OF THE MANAGER AND THE WAY THE MANAGER MANAGES THE DRESSINGS ROOM WAS IMPORTANT. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T HAVE A TEAM OF STRONG LEADERS AND BRING A WEAK MANAGER. IT WILL NEVER WORK. so i agree with Oneil on one hand But on the pther hand he is Also proving Terry Right because He would have left Terry co at that airport, Which would have Stamped his Authority in a different way.. And that was what AVB didn’t have to Manage that dressing Room.. AVB IS A GREAT COACH HIS SUCCESS PROVES THAT HOWEVER HE'S NO JOSÉ OR PEPP.. He can Build a team and assemble a Proper team once he's given the tools(players)...
This is the best TalkSport team - by far
john terry... i don't like the man... but i totally agree with him on that one. if there's limited 1st class seats they should've gone to the older, established players and the kids and up & comers in economy. it's the kids who need to be managed in that situation not those who have already earned their stripes.
He shouldn’t be opposing AVB’s decision so openly in front of other players. It put the manager in an impossible situation and he was doomed to fail knowing the senior players were working against him and some would have lost respect for him from then on.
3:16 if AVB failed at Chelsea because of player power, why did he fail at Spurs?
I’m with Terry on this one!! Younger Players have to earn their place and respect! That’s how it used to be. Didn’t they used to clean the boots of senior players, as long as other chores? Senior players should expect to be in first class , Espicially on a 13 hour flight!
AVB should have left them.
This is why JT has turned into a top top manager 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely..cant get any manager role..this is why
The entitlement of JT is astounding.
Oneill is a gem
This comment section is exactly what's wrong with humanity!! So established pros who's been through the wire with the club should just accept being treated as second class citizens whilst the academy kids gets treated like kings huh?
No, they shouldn’t be treating the youth players like second class citizens, which they were.
The thing is, JT and the rest of the big names go on to win the CL that season. But in the same breath, the owner paid around 15 million to get AVB out of Porto, and basically the club captain doesn’t give the guy a chance and the owners money was wasted over one plane trip .. if I was Roman and I heard that had happened I would be livid.. there’s a balance to strike between big players and the amount of influence they should have.
I guess whatever ppls opinion of the situation it all kinda worked out pretty well in the end… we have a saying at Chelsea and it’s 'Villa Boas bad' because the last time we were that bad was during the days of Ian porterfield! Which was a completely different era.
Yes, SJ is right - no one came out of that situation with any dignity
Martin Oneill is a legend from belfast. What a manager he was.
And a more than decent player.
Except he's from Coleraine
Kilrea County Derry actually.
@baz007 village in Coleraine.... county Londonderry. The city is called derry actually
my uncle went to school with him in St Malacy's Grammar School in Belfast, so I took it he was from here , didn't realise it was Derry where he was born, cheers!
Doesn’t matter whether AVB is right or wrong, Terry can’t rule the roost over the boss. You don’t take the boss on like that in front of everyone.
O’Neil talking nonsense, senior players who have brought the club major success have every right to question a manager who puts his senior & best players in economy whilst putting youngsters who haven't achieved anything in 1st class.
That is shocking man management, not surprised he was sacked not long after with that attitude.
Id agree with JT over Martin on this matter 110% surprised Martin disagrees atall.
Is John Terry deflecting.
The players at Chelsea were loyal to Jose and Jose had fallen out with Villas Boas over an acceptance speech that Villas Boas made at a UEFA award ceremony after he had won the treble which included the Europa League at Porto.
Villas Boas thanked Guardiola despite working with Jose at Inter Milan and Jose rightly took offense.
Totally agree, he said that whole interview like he wasn’t an arrogant and wrong moron
John Terry ego just got in the way because he didn’t want to sit in economy ridiculous guy I would have chucked Terry out of the plane
I’m with JT on this, absolutely bang on what they did, stupid decision which sends the wrong message to the younger players
Simon, why did you not ask JT about being convicted by the league for racism?
No race card. Just a genuine question.
You’ve bought up black players making up the fact that managerial jobs are harder for them to get, so we know you have no issue speaking on race in football with these ex players.
Find it very cowardly.
Dont forget that all these Chelsea players, who was willing to die for Mourinho...threw him under the bus at his second spell.....JT doesnt care about anyone but himself
You don’t earn respect by taking respect away from people who earned it. AVB didn’t have to put himself in that position. Most leaders come into a place and think that they can earn respect by trying to humiliate seniors who are around. That’s poor leadership
We all know what kind of 'man' John Terry is. No surprised here
I challenge you all to go a week without talking Chelsea
Its jarring to see 50+ year old men not understanding the difference between player power and principle.
You don’t put youth players in first class and the first team in economy. I’m sorry Martin but you’re wrong, AVB was completely out of his depth.
I believe Martin said that he would not have taken AVB's position but given that he had already made that decision Martin thinks he should have stuck by it.
@@liamdoherty211 If he’d stuck with his decision and the plane leaves without its three best players, I’m not sure how he explains that one to the board.
Agree with John on this one
Is like saying Gary neville coming into AC milan as manager and putting Maldini, Rui costa and Shevchenko in economy while putting youngsters in 1st class to assert dominance.
You learn to serve before you learn to lead
Am I the only one that thinks, 1) JT has thrown Frank and Diddier under the bus. 2) A true leader would say, we are a team so we travel together. No division at all.
Huge mistake from AVB but this attitude where players override the manager is the reason Chelsea are where they find themselves today..

Nah that’s on several players, Rio Ferdinand and Lampard have both come out and highlighted the issues with the golden gen, tribal mentality with the United, Liverpool, Chelsea players in the England team, and managers playing 442 with lamps and gerrard in the team when they needed a holding player behind them (carrick, hargreaves etc) the blame can’t be pinned on 1 player just because you don’t like them
John Terry wasn't playing for England from 1966 to 2024 😂
Where’s AVB now? You shouldn’t undermine the manager but he was blatantly out of his depth.
Ahhh back when Rafa wanted to to sign Gareth Barry and get rid of Xabi Alonso. Still up there with the absolute worst things I’ve ever heard and changed my view of him to this day 😂
Would Martin make Henrik, Hartson and Bobo sit in Economy whilst Slaney and Si Ferry sit in first class?
The AGREE with JT button !
Jose once said he had an easy job at Chelsea coz he didnt really have to manage the players coz Terry did that
Don’t start a fight you have no chance winning
Fight or a flight...or a flight fight lol
When pundits and commentators have nothing to pick on...
Terry was wrong but i don't fully blame him because any other captain who has given so much to the club just to be disrespected by a new manager would have done the same... Respect is reciprocal... AVB was Totally wrong
All players should've been in economy or the first. If they are in the first team squad. They should all sit together as opposed to apart irrespective of the the class of travel. To put the first team players in economy is ridiculous and unnecessary given some younger players were in first class.
