One of my earliest memories as a 2 1/2-year-old child was that of my mother crying out of impotence and anger when Argentina (the country where I was born) won the world cup. Everybody took to the streets to celebrate as my mother got angrier and angrier. I obviously could not understand her reaction. All I gathered from that moment on was that football/soccer had to be a "bad sport" since it made her act so crazy... It took me still a good 10 years to understand why. A member of my family had disappeared less than a year prior and my mother herself had been expelled from University. My mother has a really bad memory and she doesn't remember this reaction -or as we many other, she chooses not to-. She denies having ever had it. But it marked me forever, as strongly as the first time I ever saw the sea or listened to a different language. I grew up in a time of terror, within a family that reproduced the Terrorism of State within, and this forever shaped my life. I have never had a chance to discuss this with members of my family in full, just as Holocaust or Disappeared's denial, they would do pretty much anything to avoid seriously tackling these issues with me.

I have often wondered about this statement, should the 1978 world cup never taken place in Argentina or not at all? Because even if FIFA decided to take the world cup from Argentina due to the military regime, and we should not forget that Argentina had bene given the task of hosting the turnament back in 1966, long before the 1976 coup, it would still have to give it to an another South American country, since the 1978 world cup had to take place in America, as the previous one had taken place in Europe. In the late '70s, most South American countries were under military rule, and even the few civilian governments were nothing more than military puppets. So if FIFA had instead given the 1978 World Cup to Chile or Brazil, it would still take place in a country under a military dictatorship, neither was this the first time, the 1934 World Cup in Italy is another example. As for Argentina being favored by the referees, that's generally the case with host nations, and there are even more blatant examples. The Argentina-Peru game will always have a shadow of doubt lingering over it, but nothing conclusive has ever been proved, neither Ledesma's testimony, which although definitely the most serious, has raised more questions than it has answered. Even if the particular match was staged, this doesn't mean the entire tournament was, if there has certainly been a staged world cup match than this West Germany vs Austria in 1982, however I have never heard this tournament being called staged, although it is probably by far the most scandalous ever.

Brazil was weak, the game against Poland was great... Why dutch don't beat them in final? That Argentinian team play even better than in next wc,including 1986 and 2014...Fillol,Olguin,Passarella, Tarantini,Gallego,Ardiles,Bertoni and specially Kempes were shining stars!

I don't know if someone remember the path of Italy in that WC. Our coach was Enzo Bearzot the same coach who lead Azzurri in the next WC of Spain '82 and also the players was the quite the same. Well, Italy was the only team to beat Argentina during the whole WC: in the Groupe stage won by Italy. One day i listened to an interview to Enzo Bearzot who claimed that during that World Cup the italian team stop to believe in ourselfs, maybe because they was satisfy. He said that if Azzurri during that World Cup showld believe more in the final victory still in 1978 WC they could reach great result in that edition too. By the way Italy was forurth in that edition of the WC and deserve to reach the final also for a controversial referring in the crucial game against Holland!

It always makes me laugh that:
The Falklands is 7864 miles or 12656 kilometers away from London in the UK.
But the distance between Douglas in the Isle of man to Buenos Aires in Argentina is 6903 miles or 11110 kilometers.
So Buenos Aires is actually nearer to the Isle of Man, then London is to the Falklands by 961 miles or 1546 kilometers
Make of that what you will!

I love your videos, but this one has an EXTREMELY partial view. It's true that there was a violent dictatorship that put masive pressure over Argentine players, it's also true that Peru's game was controversial... but you don't say a thing about a superb tight final against Holland which CLEARLY wasn't fixed as Holland hit many posts. You portray the whole Cryuff thing as if the Argentinean political situation was the reason he didn't played (as the gossip says) but he stated clearly that it wasn't related to that, but instead of a Barcelona situation.
You also say practically anything at all about Kempes, Filliol or Passarella who are for sure some of the best players of the history of world Football (specially Passarella). It's true that there is a controversial match, like Brazil against Turkey on 2002, England against Argentina and Germany in '66, South Korea THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT, Germany against Argentina in '90, and the lists goes on, and will ever go on.

I want to say one thing about Passarella....and he was indeed a great captain and great player.....the Dutch have just equalised late in the game and suddenly look the most likely to grab a win. Johann Neeskens is running dangerously with the ball and Passarella literally punches him in the jaw. The useless referee Gonella doesnt even award Holland a free kick or send off Pasarella. Neeskens is flat on his back and Kempes (a teammate of Neeskens at Valencia) looks shocked at what has just happened. For Passarella this assault stopped Neeskens in his stride and also Hollands momentum. Play is held up a few minutes. Its the dark arts at its finest but the Argentine captain should have been sent off.

The world cup has always been corrupt. It was just more obvious in 78.
Saying that Argentina did have a very good team. However there was no way they would have lost the final. If Holland had scored instead of hitting the post late on the goal would have been disallowed or there would have been a shit ton of injury time or something else to favour Argentina.
Dutch players later on said they were fearful of getting out of the stadium alive if they had won.

Supposedly the Argentines tried to bribe some of the players, but the accused have denied it so far. Also there was an offer from the Brazillians 10k for each player if Peru won or only lost 0:3. The latter is probably the only one that can be proven since many players reported it.

I don´t have a perfect english but i'll try to explain my point of view and why i don´t agree totally with this ideo. I am not argentinian, i am colombian and i love the football. I won't deny that there was influence of the regime in this world cup, this is a sadly true, but i think that the argentinian team was just the best and even, they had won in another country. Argentina had such an incredible generation. Kempes in that time, was one of three best players in spain, and surely he had won the ballon d'orr if the south american players were allowed to get it. They also had Alonso one of greatest in the river plate's history, there were also very important players in the history of the country such as Bertoni, Housseman, Luque, Passarella, Bertoni, Fillor, Gallego, and so on. All of them are one of the most important player in the history of different teams, for instance, Passarella, Luque, Fillol in River, Bertoni in Independiente, Houseman in Huracan, etc. In this time, the southamerican and the european football were allmost at the same level. Between 1977 and 1984 all the intercontinental champions were the south american . In that world cup, Holland was very different from its exhibition in 1974 Brazil 1978 was an average team, Italy so poor, honestly the level in that world cup was not high. For this i think that none of the teams in this tournament was better than Argentina. It is true, sadly that Videla influenced in the world cup, but Argentina also needed a good team in order to win, the government help is not a necessary condition to win, we can look south korea in 2002, they were helped but that team was not good enough as argentina was in 1978, and for this the asian finihed 4 th and the south american 1 st.

Historically, Argentina is (at most) the second best team in South America. They have won two World Cups and Brazil has won five. It's an empirical fact. Five is (three) more than two.
You might argue today Argentina is or even that Chile (who won the last two Copa Americas) is the best but historically, that debate has been settled for decades now. Brazil is ahead of Argentina.
Uruguay has won two World Cups (in 1930 and 1950) and FIFA counts the two gold medals in 1924 and 1928. By that count, they have won four world competitions and are therefore the second best. That would relegate Argentina to third place.
For my tastes, the fact that Buenos Aires alone has double the population of all of Uruguay leads me to believe that they are clear candidates for the best of South America. In my opinion. Not in fact.

This really is a silly premise by the author of this video, who claims that Argentina's world cup triumph is surely tarnished, all because of the controversy on the political concerns surrounding the tournament. While criticism of the organizers is deserved and it is true that the tournament should probably not have been held in Argentina at that time, to say it tarnishes Argentina's achievement on the pitch is absurd. Would the author also claim that Messi and Argentina's footballing triumph in Qatar was illegitimate as result of the host countries' abysmal human rights record?

Given Uriburu, Perón, Videla and Malvinas, it's a bit unpleasant to hear the British handle the issue like that. Not a fan of the regime, but you do realize that the accusation about dopping is wildly unfunded, such as the quote of the French player as proof, right? And I think it's also really important to know that the destination of the Cup was decided by 1974's World Cup final already, while we still had a democratic government. It's also important to mention that Argentina lost matches in the group stage just as any other team could. You speak as if it was all rigged, but matches lost and won seem fair and square. I'll except Perú, that's more polemic. And Cruyff was amazingly racist toward Argentina since years before the Cup. He refused to play the Intercontinental Cup against Independiente in 1972 and 1973, once sending Juventus as replacement and the other time cancelling the Cup. The guy's not a good example here. He spoke ill of our people during the dictatorship, as much as he did before.I think you went a little too biased here. And even if you think Perú was fixed, respect the men playing a little bit. Come on! Quote Kempes! Quote Menotti! Quote Gallego! They'll have no clue what you mean with anfetamins and referees. They were themselves threatened by the military. To me if forget nations for a second and think only of humankind throughout the world it is surely important to honor the memory of the Argentine victims throught the brutal fascist regime of Videla.
