College Protests convinced the USA to stop wasting lives in VietNam. Colleges (or Universities as we call them in Canada) have always been a place for freedom of thought and speech. A pro-Palestinian protest group disrupted an event I was at the other week - on a University campus. I found their disruption annoying, and disagreed with some of the points they tried to make, but they were peaceful, said what they came to say and moved on. I was simultaneously annoyed with them, impressed by their commitment, and proud of the respectful way that they spoke, acted and handled themselves. Considering their static protest was playing to an empty campus, I can't really blame them for seeking out our crowd. Had they simply previously asked the organizer for a few minutes to speak, I think they would have been granted it and nobody would have even been annoyed. if you can't explore differing viewpoints on a University campus, what is a safe place for freedom of speech and thought?

If your protest takes the stance that your protest will continue until your opponent changes it's opinion, or policy, you are no longer participating an a peaceful protest. You are now part of an occupation that is attempting to coarse, intimidate and extort your opposition. Coercion, intimidation and extortion are illegal activities and do not constitute a peaceful protest and participants need to be dealt with, with the full extent of the law.
The reality is that we are already divided by our beliefs, and we should be able to disagree with anyone as long as we can keep the peace and respect each other’s fundamental rights and freedoms. We should be able to communicate our thoughts and our beliefs in a respectful and non-violent way, without the government stepping in to prop up or persecute certain groups. We want our fundamental freedoms to be respected and upheld by the government, not constantly trampled on. I am seeing zero respect for the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms right now, especially since the Trucker Convoy and freedom rallies across Canada. We have seen a lot of Christian persecution since then -it has really ramped up, not that anyone is even talking about that. Remember the pastor in Edmonton that was locked up for literally months?
