    I've bought myself a Civic e:hev in Gibraltar. I'm very happy with the fuel efficiency and often get 4.1L/100km when on a drive from my house to Tarifa, whilst observing the speed limits much of the time. Otherwise, I average around 4.5L/100km when on a longer trip to Malaga. I can't complain about the fuel economy at all.

    I really enjoy this video with in depth information of Civic e:HEV that I couldn't find anywhere else. I have bought Civic e:HEV (sedan version). The car is really the driver's car. Acceleration sound feels nice with Linear Shift Control described at 18:22. It really does make the difference from Corolla Hybrid 1.8 we also have in our house. (Our country do not have Corolla 2.0 version) The difference is not just the acceleration is much better but the engine sound is much more pleasant to hear on the Civic. The interior is also better. Gas consumption is almost the same.

    Mr. Yamamoto, thank you for such a enlightening presentation about the new generation of Civic Hybrid. Does this 2.0L DI engine face issues with carbon buildup of the intake valve that is common in other GDI engines? Or does the Atkinson cycle design reduce/eliminate this?

    I think understanding why there isn’t a brief output of 140 plus 184 is quite hard to understand. I have now decided it doesn’t matter that I can’t get it. The car drives great!! Thank you for the presentation and long answer to another comment on roughly this topic.

      One last try to clear things up. In theory you are right that when the system is working under 'parallel' hybrid operation i.e. the engine is connected to the wheels driving the car and the electric motor is providing assist power for acceleration, both outputs could be added to create a higher output than the nominal 184PS, however that is from marketability perspective not suitable for everyone's use as a 'normal' daily use passenger car characteristics. The reason is that when the battery assist is ending after let's say 20 seconds, the car would ouptup less than half the combined output resulting in a drastic change and drop in performance which could be dangerous n public traffic situation (e.g. while overtaking or going up-hill). As a special performance car in theory the additional assist power could be used as a 'boost' or 'overtake' feature just like an NO2 injection known from Fast & the Furious. In that case the car would have something like nearly 300PS for a very short time but also needs reinforced spec to withstand that output. The reason why you can't just add both maximum output figures from engine (140PS) and electric motor (184PS) is that they have their peaks at different rpm so you need to look where the addition of both figures becomes maximum.
      I hope this helped.

    On that slide about sport mode there is a graph which on the vertical axis is the engine speed against time and the the graph rises and falls between shifts on for the civic ehev. Does this mean the simulated shifts for the electric motor actually stops for a moment between shifts? or are the shifts purely noises?

  • @Wilhem275

    Mr. Yamamoto, please, a question about the maximum rated output. In the US market, the Accord Hybrid with this powertrain is rated for a "combined power" of 212 HP.
    Since the motor's maximum output is 184, I understand this combined max power is only obtained when the system works in parallel mode; and must also be at high vehicle speed, with the ICE rotating fast enough to support acceleration while holding the high gear.
    I'd like to understand better in which speed and load conditions this combined result is achieved.

    • @kotaroyamamoto808
      @kotaroyamamoto808  2 роки тому +17

      The 184 HP is solely the maximum output of the electric propulsion motor. Top speed is also achieved only with the electric motor. For the e:HEV system there is no such thing like a combined output but is determined only by the maximum output of the electric propulsion motor but reaching this 184HP requires a combined power source. The engine-mode (parallel hybrid mode) is obtained in a speed range somewhat between 80-150km/h where the overall efficiency of driving the wheels directly with the combustion engine is better than converting mechanical energy (combustion engine) to electric energy (via the generator to the propulsion motor) and back to mechanical energy (drive power to the wheels). Over this speed the system always drives the car with the electric motor (series hybrid mode) up to top speed. Now the actual top speed is reached only with the 105kW (143HP) of the combustion engine converted into electric energy via the generator and in this case the propulsion motor also produces just 143HP of output. So when does the electric propulsion motor produce its maximum 184HP? In situations when the car faces an inclination while driving at top speed, the system will provide electric assist power from the battery to maintain the top speed as long as possible, even under uphill condition. In such case it can happen that the system gives maximum assist power (series hybrid mode with parallel motor assist) so that the electric propulsion motor reaches maximum output of 135kW or 184HP and exactly in this case both the engine output (converted into electric power via the generator) and the battery power work together as a "combined" output. The only reason why it could be justified to call this a combined output is that the 184 HP do not come from the generator (driven by the engine) only but also requires the maximum assist power from the battery.
      I hope this helps to understand the system better in this limit condition and how the "combined output" is produced.

      @@kotaroyamamoto808 thanks for the explanation. I would like clarification to be done. The maximum 184 HP is also obtained when you strongly accelerate (let's say an overtake situation) as long as you have a sufficient battery load? Or is it strictly related to inclination/uphill?
      Thanks

    Thank you for the presentation. I often travel with family to remote locations with little access to road side assistance.
    I'm worried that the electric motor generator is a single point of failure: ie. if that motor goes bad, the vehicle might stall. How does the e-cvt handle such eventualities? Does it have a "limp home" mode?

    I am an owner of a 2025 hybrid sport touring in the U.S. I must say, around 50 mph, there is a huge lag between throttle application and the clutch engaging, then power. Maybe a couple seconds. Not very intuitive for quick two-lane passes. The car seems unpredictable at higher speeds how much power will be there.
    Other than that, it feels like an open differential at low speed corners, lighting up the inside.
    Maybe I'm just ignorant to why, but if there is no trasmission, why not just have an e-diff like the Elantra N?
    Cost? Not needed in this segment?
    If this engine goes in the Si, it will need a larger battery for blasting down winding roads more than a couple minutes and a diff.
    Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Ordered the Advance sonic grey (in Romania), first available delivery date (Oct-23) coincided with the color I wanted👌. I would have wanted more configuration, especially as I think the 18' black wheels are nicer on this color than the silver wheels, unfortunately no options for configuration ... I would have paid the extra cost over the regular 18' wheels (like a trade-in)
    Would using a larger battery (than the 1.05 kwh) helped to have more EV mode in city? I mean I would trad 30L of boot space for this :)
    Also wasn't possible to equip a 50L petrol tank? For motorways, where consumption is highest, would have been helpful. Thanks

    Is "power meter" accurate as to percentage of total output power (kW)? For example, would EXACTLY 50% on the power-meter during acceleration indicate EXACTLY 67.5kW of power output?

    • @kotaroyamamoto808
      @kotaroyamamoto808  5 місяців тому +2

      Sorry for the late reply. The power meter is not an absolute meter i.e. 50% is not always 67.5kW. It is more a relative power meter as it indicates the percentage of releasable power under the actual specific driving condition incuding all parameters like battery charge level, ambien temperature etc. If you floor the accelerator while accelerating, the power meter can indicate 100% all the way up to top speed yet absolute maximum power is released finally when reaching top speed. I hope that answers your question.

    This hybrid system is the best implementation of hybrid setup, please get this for other honda models in India.
    If I had to suggest anything for this setup is adding motor(s) at the rear axle for the RS variants OR just shift the motor from front to rear axle if possible.

But when you learn that Honda didn't even bother to put a low windshield washer fluid in a market like Europe, this whole engineering presentation feels like an exercise in futility! Sorry mr.
