  • Video #702: There is more than one way to pierce a lentil bead. In this video I show you how to do it properly... More Info: www.beadsandbea... Polymer Clay Tutor.
In this video I will show you the tips and tricks for piercing holes in your polymer clay lentil beads.
In a previous video I showed you how to roll the Swirly Lentil Bead shape, using leftover pieces of a Mod Cane made of Sculpey Souffle Clay. I have also done a video on piercing holes in round polymer clay beads, but the lentil bead has it's own unique challenges.
I like to pierce the raw lentil bead after it has had a chance to firm up either by resting, or by putting into an ice water bath.
Wearing gloves... using a light touch and a sharp fine bead piercing wire with a gentle twisting motion... start on one edge and go 99% of the way to the other side. Then pierce from the other side to meet up. You can get a perfect hole centered right on the edge. This will make WAY more sense when you watch the video.
The biggest tips I can share, are to work on a cool, firm bead... use the sharpest, straightest and finest piercing wire you can fine... go slow... be gentle... use a twisting motion... and try to keep the needle as straight as possible. Then practice, practice, practice!
In this video I also show you some neat tricks and tips for baking your wonderful lentil shaped beads... Have fun!

I am so very grateful that you have taken the mystery out of making and swirling such awesome lentil beads with two different videos! I am still a relative novice to polymer clay jewelry-making, and I found it so extremely helpful that you took the time to explain how to pierce these lovely beads! I really liked the ice water recommendation before piercing a warm lentil bead--that will be so much simpler for me to do who am making beads for specific immediate projects! I am so very happy to have discovered your excellent tutorials on You Tube! Thank you for sharing your hard work and expertise with newbies like me, and for all those who want to refine their bead making polymer clay skills!!! I am wishing you well, and I hope you will have a very successful and lovely Spring, Summer, and Fall 2023!!! Sincerely, Laurie from Daffodil Golden Trumpets Ministry 🤩💓🦋🌲🍁🦀🌄🌟🎀🎺🎺🍀🌞🌈

Your holes are so nice! You might want to add that you can straighten bent needles by rolling them on your table top under a block of wood, or even the acrylic block they've used to make the swirl bead.

Lentil bead piercing the long way is the bane of my polymer clay existence. :p I love doing it through the center but then adding a wire so that I can still place it straight. I find the not so pretty half of the part I want to be the front and make that half have the wire coming up from the center. I usually bend the wire so that one cut end goes into the front of the center hole halfway and the other cut end goes into the back hole halfway. I hope that makes sense. :)

I recently found a set of textured foam sheets in a kit for childrens crafts for clearance at my local craft store. I bought them and loved how great they worked with my clay projects. This got me thinking about all the unconventional tools we use as clay artists and I was wondering if you had any such tools you have found that would be worth adding to my supplies.

How thin is your piercing needle, either in MM, inches, wire-gauge equivalent, etc.? I’m trying to find something thin that’s longer than a regular beading needle of, say, size 10 - 12.

I just checked my bead piercing wires and they are 20 gauge. Hope that helps!

could you make a video about. a technique call buff?? i read that if you buff denim fabric with your piecw in a container gives your piece shine wihout glazing? i read it on crafty app.

Is it important to glaze the polymer clay beads? Or leave it natural looking? Does cooked polymer have a natural shine to it?

Hi Cindy. I've searched through your channel and I found a few videos involving textures, texture sheets, texture rollers and rubber stamps, but as those things tend to be a bit expensive to a beginner, I'd very much enjoy watching a video of yours about creating our own texture sheets, if that's possible.
Also, I'd like to know more about making our own silicone molds, especially for bezels - what materials do you recommend and which brands would be more cost effective to order online (especially to Europe). I know sculpey makes bezel molds but those are very plain, I'd rather purchase a pretty bezel and make my own mold out of it, but I found the mold putties to be a bit expensive to order online, especially taking into consideration the shipping costs to Portugal. Any tips?

+lilithmarleen I recently bought a large pizza and it was rested on a thick plasti-coated base with a textured diamond patten and I tried it on my clay and it made an excellent impression for free.II expect there must be other packaging from footstuffs and household items that could be used for texture. I have also used the disposable plastic casing from my asthma inhaler to cut out clay circles! Smaller circles and dots can be made using plastic drinking straws obtained with your drink from fast food restaurants

That depends on the brand... but for this bead which is made with Sculpey Souffle, I baked it for 1 hour at 275F. I would suggest you watch all my baking videos. they will help you get good results when baking your polymer clay. Thanks!
