  • A Memory Palace is an imaginary location in your mind where you can store mental images to remember facts, strings of numbers, shopping lists or all kinds of things. It's hugely popular among memory champions.

    The memory palace is a technique to remember facts, numbers or other things, like a shopping list. It has been around since ancient times and is also known as the Method of Loci. Memory Champion Marwin Wallonius used it to remember, in just 30 minutes, the correct order of 5040 binary digits or a complete deck of 52 cards in just 33 seconds. Here is how it works.
    Close your eyes and imagine some sort of familiar physical space, like your house, school or office, and then add a mental image of the thing you want to remember. To remember a bunch of things you can use different rooms and visualize how you would walk through that space following the same specific route. As you walk through, place the things you want to remember at specific locations. Ideally, imagining things in a funny or crazy way also helps to remember. Once we have placed all the items that we want to remember our memory palace is complete.
    The day we return to our palace and want to remember what's inside it, we have to go back in. We have to concentrate and imagine opening the door and walking our route. Once we pass by the specific location that we used to place our things, the item will pop back into our mind Let's try to remember 7 ingredients to make some pancakes.
    You open the door and see a full cup of flour next to some shoes. Strange.
    You walk into the bedroom. Inside your bed, sleeps a teaspoonful of baking powder.
    In the living room sits a massive egg watching TV.
    And on top of the TV is a cup of milk, almost full.
    You go to into the kitchen and see 6 teaspoons dancing around a bottle of vegetable oil.
    Enough. You leave the house and enter the garden. But it's full of sugar canes and in the middle, a teaspoon dressed like a gardener. What going on?
    You turn around to check the bathroom. The only thing left is half a teaspoon and salt.
    Now try yourself! Close your eyes and think of a familiar place such as your home. We will now slowly list 7 numbers. As you walk through your space, place each one in a different location. Lets go: 3, 14, 1, 5, 9, 2, 6

    Tip: you don’t have to picture walking through the palace as that can sometimes be difficult, instead try focusing more on the image of whichever item in the palace you’ve chosen. Then incorporate what you are trying to remember to that particular image.

    Thanks! I am using this method to learn a foreign language. It works, but (for me) it can take 5-10 minutes to construct an effective image for a word or phrase. Another problem I am struggling with is how to keep everything in a single building. For example, to memorize the word for "Nurse" I added a hospital to my memory palace. To memorize "Airplane" I added an airport! My memory palace map is starting to look like Sim City!

      The World Memory Championships started in the early 1990s, and those contestants were using memory palaces primarily. Memory Palaces (also called the Method of Loci) were used by the ancient Greeks, and other civilizations, several thousand years ago to memorize speeches and religious texts, and pretty much anything.

    Thanks for the fun and informative video about memory palaces. I have hundreds that I use for different purposes. I've used houses, apartments, and dorms I've lived in, schools, parks, neighborhoods, workplaces, and even movies and TV episodes as memory palaces. I used them to memorize Pi to about 5,600 places, and have used them in the Long-Term Memory events of the USA Memory Championship, which I've competed in 4 times, finishing as high as 3rd place in this year's competition.

    Damn this actually works. I used my house...remembered the ingredients and numbers when i tried to write them directly after but went to take a call and came back 5 min later to try again. I recalled all the #s right and all the ingredients save for I put 1 t baking soda, 1/4 t salt and it was baking powder, 1/2 t salt.
    It's best to use a place you are extremely familiar with like your home or work. I used objects in rooms that reminded me of the thing to remember ie 3 hooks in entry, 14 books on shelf, 1 bed in my room, 5 jars on vanity, 9 bottles in shower, 2 pieces furniture in another bedroom, 6 pieces furniture all around living room. They may or may not correspond w/ actual items but I found it helps to be in the vicinity (I do have 3 hooks but I have more than 14 books however it was a large # so I was able to associate it quickly). Pretty cool technique as I wouldn't have been able to remember all the ingredients and numbers otherwise. I could still recite them now! Amazing!

I often have to put numbers from one file to other so this helps me remember it without having to cbeck the number several times. It also trains my brain so it has benefits. I recommend this also for school to remember dates or pieces of information. It takes time to master it tho

    As a person with aphantasia, I can't tell if this actually works or if people are just trolling.
    nvm: Even if you have aphantasia it still works but thinking of abstract things like the number two in a certain room will not work. You need to make a story where there are 3 objects and only three objects there for some specific reason.

    Oxygen tank is 3 quarters full. Check the glucometer, and we have 14 test strips, 1 lancet, 5 alcohol prep pads, 9 and gauze pads. Drug box has 2 safety tags instead of one. Check the oxygen main, and the regulator is set to 6L/min. This is part of the routine that I use to check the ambulance before I start my shift.

    I walk into the mud room and the number 3 is hanging on the door to the house. I open the door and my diss are tugging the number 14 between them. I head into the bathroom. The 1 is sitting on the toilet reading a newspaper and the 5 is hanging with the hand towels. In the study, 9 is sitting watching tv. I head to the kitchen and 2 is dancing to the radio. I head down the hallway and 6 is sitting dejectedly on the stairs.

    As someone on the autistic spectrum I would like to point out that it’s much easier to concentrate and take information on board when not being bombarded with other stimuli. So for example the background music in this video competes with the narration, making it much harder to focus on the main message. (I appreciate that this is not everyone’s problem, but I would never play music whilst teaching, it just doesn’t feel like it will conducive to focus.)

    How can i use this technique with more complex subjects... As for example Medicine? I've used with simpler, less complex things. Grosseries, phone numbers, etc. It would be usefull to try this with a college textbook? Sorry for my english. Self taught. Feel free to correct me.

      +Alejandro Restrepo to be honest I’m not sure. Technically you can, but I’m not sure how useful it will be as the chunks of information you attach to each room are pretty small. But why don’t you give it a try and tell us later if it worked.

  • @SiMeGamer
    @SiMeGamer 7 років тому +19

    But do you override other items and create a new palace or do you keep them where they are and add stuff on top of them? Can you rearrange already existing items? How do you remember which path to take when you want to revisit something so that you don't accidentally do something wrong? If the "palace" you chose is too small, and you have already filled it, do you need to move everything to a new bigger palace or do you expand the space you have by adding rooms/drawers/move walls/etc?

    • @dashyasin

      But that doesn't answer some of my other questions like how to remember the path to find those things or if I can move them around. For example. The recipe they gave. How would I remember where to visit in order to find the right ingredients for that specific dish? It sounds like a perfect method for storing information, but not how to get it out in the right order. Especially when things overlap. Do I need two places for two different dishes if I need to add half a spoon of sugar? If there is no answer yet but it works then that's fine too but I would love to know if there is some kind of answer to these more specific question. Theory and practice are two different things and I would love to understand both as much as I can. Doesn't mean I won't try to use it, it's just bonus knowledge :]

    • @jdas5842
      @jdas5842 7 років тому +6

      SiMe well , first of all you can retrieve the information in the right order because you have numbered the objects and stored information accordingly . So that will not be hard . But for reusing the memory you can either start afresh in the memory palace or use it with the old information that you have stored. Let's say you have successfully remembered the name of presidents of a country(e.g. U.S.A) in successive order and you have arranged it in your mind palace. Suppose the first thing when you enter your mind palace is a doormat (which will be object number 1) . Now for George Washington , let's assume you have pictured a guy that you know named George holding the Washington monument . This is the first thing on your lists of presidents . But now if you need to remember something else for e.g. a certain list of books in alphabetical order and the first thing on this list is the book "Animal farm" , so now you can add visualize something like George sitting in an animal farm holding the Washington monument. And when you recall I think you can easily distinguish between a book and a president. However this doesn't work that well for using short term lists like cards . If you have a list of cards memorized in a specific order and you have to learn another set of cards in a different order this technique might be very difficult. So you can use another "journey" for it and start with a blank memory palace.

    • @jdas5842
      @jdas5842 7 років тому +2

      SiMe If you have 2 recipes and they vary by half a spoon of sugar you could use the same journey for the two dishes and at a certain step when you need to add sugar in one , you can picture 2 things for the 2 different dishes only at that particular point.

(for the number 6).
