Really, I own goats, chickens, rabbits, and peacocks.....they are a terror and everywhere .....I got one that had 63 eggs ....they are about 8 that show up every night on my lot...I will not have any bite my animals or my Aussie pups ...your welcome to stay in a tent on my property .....

The diamond back rattle snake has never even been considered to be protected because of its successful historic population growth. I bet you feel defanging a rattle snake in order to snake proof a dog is unethical.

How do you naysayers, who despise rattlesnake roundups as horrible, feel about the wholesale extermination of ants, cockroaches, and mosquitos? Ants, cockroaches and mosquitoes are a very important part of the ecosystem, and humans only incentivize their distribution.

The venom is injected into horses then the horse produces something in it's blood the contracts with the venom and then that is extracted from the horses blood and that is the anti venom

I just chop their heads off. But they surprisingly live a long time that way unless you brain em'. I never tortured them. If they get anywhere near the house or the barn animals we just kill em'. If they are out in the woods somewhere.. we don't bother them. Been to the rattle snake round up a few times.. It was interesting to visit but.. the meat tastes terrible. Ill stick to alligator which is actually delicious.
If you actively being attacked by one fine, but seeking them out to destroy them just ain't it. Rattlesnakes are shy by nature and only attack when they feel threatened.

And? Sewing an animals mouth shut is animal abuse. Decapitating animals for fun, believe it or not, is animal abuse. People wouldn’t be okay with this if it was cats or dogs. 8,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes a year, only 5 die including exotic keepers. You’re more likely to die from a dog, but again, if it was dogs mouths being sewn shut or decapitated, these people would be in prison (rightfully so).

I'm a big snake guy. I keep snakes, and go herping with my kids all the time. It disgusts me to see snakes treated this way. They're innocent animals just like any other animal

there isnt in sweetwater, we have to many snakes, we also have scorpions that we have to kill of too, because they both live under our houses during summer
@@Katsdaydreams You do know rattle snakes only lay eggs once every 2-3 years in which only 4-10 of those eggs will hatch and not even half of those infant snakes will survive the first year due to being hunted by larger predators. Rats on the other hand reproduce over 6 times and give birth to upwards of 12 rats a litter, meaning that rats in general give birth to upwards of 70+ rats a year, many of which will survive and in turn, breed more. So while you're killing off a species that's extremely limited and takes far longer to reproduce, you're also removing one of the only methods to control the rat population, and the last time humans were that stupid, the black plague wiped out over 70% of Europe.

And the black plague isn't believed to have been caused by human stupidity but instead a collection of many contributing factors including the effects of a changing climate, the rise of the Mongol empire and Europeans having an underdeveloped immunoresponse to Eastern-born disease to nam a few. It was certainly made worse by a poor understanding of disease and hygiene along with the primitive state of medicine at the time but those things are actually ignorance, not stupidity. On top of all of that these events barely make a dent in the rattlesnake population. They don't even come close to killing them off entirely.

Went hiking today and heard rattlesnakes all around the trail. I like that they actually give you a warning almost like they’re saying “hey, I’m in this bush and you’re too close, stay away”. Not one came out to try to attack me. You respect their space, they’ll respect yours
I went hiking through a wooded field area and stood on thick cut brush stacked in a pile and heard the rattles, I stood really still and couldnt see anywhere it was coming from.
I jumped off the pile and ran.
Lol you've never grown up with rattle snakes then. Anyone who does knows, they don't always give you a warning, especially the hybrids in west Texas who don't rattle anymore. They sit on your cool patio and bite you or your pets without any warning before hand. They hide in a crack by your house and bite your hand as you turn your hose on. They sit in the yard quietly and bite your dog as he walks by. They hide in your chicken coop and bite you while you're grabbing eggs without any warning. They crawl up to you on your patio at night, don't rattle, then bite at you as you get up or bite you because you stepped on them in the dark.
It'd be great if we just saw them while hiking and they gave us warnings!
They’re getting REALLY bad in my city here in the desert. Scary walking my dog daily. When we have a crazy monsoon szn, they ALLLL come out.
Took my friend hiking at a really beautiful spot and when we checked in with the office, they warned us that they just moved one that morning. We went by this creek where there was tall brush all around and on our way back from the river to the trail, we started hearing a rattler 😅 we had to walk through all this brush to get back so we were trapped lolol couldn’t see it anywhere. Signs everywhere warning of rattlers. I cannot even explain how fast I sprinted back to that bish.. terrified for my life lmaooo.
Then.. on almost every single walk with my pup, we saw ded rattlers missing their head and tail. Clearly people who came across them and took care of them. All heavily foot trafficked areas. HUGEEE snakes.
My last straws is when we went to walk by a lake at night.. it’s VERY hot in the desert during summer so night walks is our only option 😭 I had my eyes on my pup the whole time. I had a bad feeling and he kept trying to go into bushes. The SECOND I took my eyes off him, he puts his nose on something in the road. His leash is a retractable so I run over to him AND ITS A BABY RATTLER!!!! Luckily, not alive. Got run over by a car but holy fffff it scared me so bad. That was the last time I allowed him to get outta my sights lolol.
I was doing research tho after I recently had a nightmare of him getting bit and couldn’t fall back asleep 💀 apparently.. dogs RARELY pass from rattler bites!!! Tf???? I had no idea. They don’t even need anti venom!!!! I’d still lose my ever loving mf mindddd if he did. Seeing pups with their faces all swollen 😭😭😭 I could never handle that lolol my pup is my life!!! My bestie. I’d be crushed
@@thedouglaspodcast the more you see them, the more you have to realize there's a bad rat/mice problem in your area, because rattlensakes go to places that have their food. They want nothing to do with us and would do everything to avoid us if possible. So yeah, you should be more worried about the rat/mice problem in your area.

There are roughly 7000 to 8000 venomous snake bites a year. Only about 10-15 of those bites are fatal. The best way to avoid being bit by any venomous snake is to leave them alone. These roundups put people in close proximity with rattlesnakes creating more danger. Also, arguably people are more dangerous to rattlesnakes than rattlesnakes are to humans.

I am from Texas and I went to the rattlesnake Roundup and my belts made a rattlesnake skin. This is a Texas thing we have millions of snakes out here and the number that they kill at the round up doesn’t even put a dent in the population. They’re highly poisonous, and so all you guys don’t like the fact they kill snakes and I guess you just stay away from Texas

I'm all for making money whether from meat sales or skin sales etc, but making the dens not reusable with gasoline seems awful because it will cause new snakes more likely to enter human populated areas.
The licenced gun holders should put gas cylinders inside the dens to shoot to make more fun. Definitely it would bring better effects on UA-cam & hence the hit rate.
I attended the roundup in Sweetwater in 1994 just to see what it was like and I left pretty much pissed off. There is so much BS being told to attendees it's pathetic! While I've never killed a rattlesnake, I'm all about the conservation of these amazing animals. They are necessary to help keep the rodent population down and female rattlesnakes are lucky if they have babies every 2-3 years! Don't attend this roundup because it is all about the money. What they fail to tell you is that most of the farmers in the area actually go hit the den sites in December and January clearing out the den sites and then they make it look like all the rattlesnakes that are turned in over the weekend were actually caught that weekend. No, they were actually caught months earlier and many of the rattlesnakes were actually captured as far as 200 miles from Sweetwater!

I just discovered today about this event, and I do not have enough facts to have an opinion yet. That being said, congrats to you for having the courage to upload a video like this one, on such a controversial event.
there is not much to know , the main argument of proponent is " muh kids and cow could get biten by them snake, they evil anyway " or " they come back anyway" while all of science has openly said these are dangerous to ecosystems, the now threatened snakes already struggling due to human populations and cars and promote misinformation and animal cruelty. most reputable scientist refuse to take venom for antivenom from such events.
My family use to take me and all the cousins and siblings here as little kids even then it never really sat right with me. Wouldnt be surprised if between 10-20 thousand snake are killed for this yearly. They sell fried rattle snake by the pound (not gonna lie its pretty good) they sell toys made from the rattles wallets made from the hide. And all sorts of other things. Its not really about education its about money and arguably tradition. West texas is huge so, i know theyll never get all of them but it cant be good for the ecosystem.
If the snake is not in my house or right under my steps or harassing my dog, I have no problem or desire to kill a living thing. They do have a purpose or they wouldn't be on this Earth.

they use up a lot of the antivenom supply.
a lot of venom labs use wild caught rattlesnakes to match the venom from certain areas. since these round ups don't send any snakes to venom labs just the unusable venom there is often a shortage of that areas venom type.
thats not true, we use the round up to collect anti-venom. clearly you have never been to one.

in order for venom to be usable it has to be collected under sterile conditions and there has to only venom in it.
again if they were actually collecting venom for antivenom they would send them to a lab where the venom could be extracted in sterile environment with proper handling. but in reality it's all for show so people don't question if what they are doing harms the local anti venom supplies.
the whole we collect antivenom thing is to excuse what they are doing along with calling it population control. cause abusing snakes snakes makes money.
@@Katsdaydreams All labs that produce anti-venom will not use any venom collected from this as it's considered too unsanitary and in turn makes the venom useless. There's too many contaminants and as you see at these roundups, the harvest of venom is not done in sterile and sanitary conditions.

Yeah this is sickening and I don’t even like snakes …
I’m on the fence with this one. First of all a rattlesnake is dangerous not to mention the cost of a bite to exceed $100,000. The math is mind boggling but would say that if they only capture 1% of the population then no harm has been done to the rattlesnake population however the form in which they kill them is cruelty. Rattlesnakes do eat mice but they won’t ever be the right way to control rodent population. Breeding and turning loose animals that do eat mice would be much better such as hawks, owls and most snakes that are non venomous. To let them go uncontrolled would be reckless and even within a few years could be dangerously out of control. If the rodent population was so bad then why do almost all baby rattlesnakes die of starvation? The only way to determine that the population of the rattlesnake is on the decline is if you compare the total numbers of snakes caught 15-20 years to the number of snake caught in the last 5 years. If the numbers are consistently lower then yes, the snake rattlesnake population is lower but if they are catching more snakes now then the snakes population is not affected by this however technology would also allow them to find snakes now much easier. I still can’t find an actual number of snakes captures at a roundup to do the math on how many snakes would continue to breed and have more snakes. We can put live natural predators out there to keep them under control but then again we are dealing with a horrible death to the snake and possibly a much worse suffering death than having it’s head cut off. That being said it’s a part of nature and that’s the snakes home but humans are also nature and out here in earth just as the snakes were so we do have the right to protect ourselves and our family and homes.

snakes are terrible creatures, we don't need to many around. A snake never helps anyone, only hurts.
Snakes help in a lot of ways. Pest control, therapy animals. If anything we need to kill all humans.
