Hubby and I are moving to Iowa next year from MN. We have lived in MN 50 years. Three reasons we are getting out of MN; Iowa does not tax social security or income drawn from a 401K, IRA, Pension, SEP or SAR SEP. Next, beginning Jan 1, 2026, Iowa is getting rid of their tiered income tax system and going to a 3.9% flat tax. Finally, they have increased the amount of homestead tax credit for Seniors. I can't wait!!

There is a very distinct change of seasons which I miss. I was lucky because I don't struggle with allergies. The people are some of the best and friendly anywhere. The winters are long. I would say from about a week before Thanksgiving and running all the way to often Easter. Not always u s 40 below but cold. Ultimately it was the long winters that drove me to South Texas ! I was in Iowa in 2019 for some professional research. I want to come back for a longer look; I really liked what I saw. But while I was walking uphill on a sidewalk in Ottumwa carrying a heavy-looking bag, a man driving his truck pulled over and offered me a ride. I figured he was being genuinely helpful, what with this being Iowa, but in the rest of the world when a stranger offers you a ride, you _never_ accept. I politely said no thanks. So, was just man just being Iowa Nice, or was I smart to play it safe there too, just as I would have been everywhere else?

Things that actually make Iowa less desirable: The corn fields, all the land has been parceled up and turned into crops, so very little public forests only what grows in between the fields. This also divides into two crop seasons, the smelly one when they are spreading cow shit and ammonia and harvest when clouds of dust and corn husks cover everything nearby in dirt. Also because its all farming land there are nothing but gravel roads once you go out of town off highways and so you're constantly going through car wash. We also have problems with drinking water contamination with fertilizers' and pesticides'.
Strangely , the cost of living isn't all that much lower, it may be incrementally lower on initial price from Chicago but higher taxes , higher or same fuel, higher groceries, less services , fewer choices, no competition etc.
The traffic enforcement is crazy, photo enforced speed traps everywhere, photo enforced red lights, constant photo enforced by airplane highways, and a lot of cops driving around enforcing traffic law, it's very much a police state and very conservative. I went back to Chicago for a few days and the ride back on I80 felt like escape from New York, white knuckled the whole way because of all the radar and the airplane running up and down the highways, I know this because i have a high end radar detector that pairs with phone to use a crowdsourcing app that shows everything around me enforcing speed, it shows the flight paths and who the planes are registered with, ie Iowa state police etc.
The food choices are not all that great either, very much doctored with sugar and sorta just pub food or carnival food. The best Iowa restaurant is like a normal Chicago restaurant, but the density of Pub and taverns is quite high and many eat out of the gas stations, which is sorta disturbing.
Religion, this place is very conservative, surrounded by recreational marijuana states Iowa is a hold out, you would think they would want that money. Female reproductive rights you can forget about. Churches everywhere and they are building a Mormon church of all things near des moines now. It's pretty creepy but I'm an Atheist so all things religious are creepy to me. IMO this is a detractor because religion is oppressive and because it's obviously in the state politics , it's a detractor because that means they are forcing their belief system and morals on everyone else via state laws.
One things that's good, sunsets and sunrises, because it's so flat here you get really red sunrises and sets.

This video is kind to my home state where I lived for 80 years. A few points I would quibble with are : the -40 degrees in the winter was extremely rare and the 100+ temperatures likewise. The loess hills consist of wind blown soil called loess. They weren’t formed by glacial action thus you won’t find rocks there. True, it is unique. Nice job on the state universities. Mine was UNI (ISTC when I graduated there). A thumbs up for your piece. Is that being “ Iowa nice?

Loess deposits form after the glaciers retreat and there is a lot of silt left over from the erosional action of the ice. The silt is blown around by the wind and is deposited into hills. I live in St. Louis, which is at the southern limit of ice age glaciers, and we also have this sort of soil, which is relatively rock-free.

Let’s for once get serious here. It’s 2023, soon to be 2024. It’s not 2003. People today are moving, or a better term, abandoning states to go to other states because of the policies of their current state governments that are making life miserable for them. The real factor that needs to be used in these posts have a lot less to do with weather or other worn out stereotypes and more to do if your a red or blue state. If your blue, you’re over taxed and over regulated and it’s harder to enjoy life when the cost of living is so much higher. When local governments care less about their own law abiding citizens and let free loaders run ram-shackles of your cities stores with smash and grab, then the good people leave. The criteria is different today so let’s just get real and see why so many are moving to Florida, Texas and Tennessee. Yes, and even states like South Dakota, of all places. They’re not blue, they’re red. The most segregated states are blue states with the most disenfranchised minorities. Their cities are full of race baiters and race hustlers. Let’s pull back the curtain and look at reality for once. Ask, who would rather move to San Francisco California today, or Des Moines Iowa? 🤔

100% agree with all of what you said. Kim Reynolds and her agenda is a sneaky one. Yep, now your kids can work in meat packing plants, that pending tax change is great, if your already wealthy, and slowly she's wrecking public education 'cause, you know, everything but the Governor's office aught to be privatized. Last year's school vouchers took $7500 per student away from public school so people can send their kids to private schools. she avoids the part where 70% of the counties are too poor for private schools, and the ones we have are Christian or Catholic based. Bet a dollar she'd squeal like a pig if there were private Muslim and Satanic schools. Just sayin'

@@marksauck3399so your governor’s daughter got preferential treatment when applying for a real estate license (got 3 tries. Usually, people get 2 tries before they’re denied). Noem actually called a meeting at the governor’s mansion to ensure her daughter would get it. Republican legislators actually came to the conclusion that she received preferential treatment btw. Several government ethics experts said that Noem interfered in the process when she shouldn’t have. You guys voted for her after that. Oh and she believes a 10 year old who has been violated and impregnated should be forced to carry the baby. She also pushed COVID 19 pseudo science, and downplayed or fought against measures meant to combat the disease, leading to SD having the 10th highest death rate (in a state with a large indigenous population which suffers disproportionately in these situations). Most stupidly, she actually wanted to sue for the right to have fireworks at Mt Rushmore. They had been banned since 2009 due to risk of fires. Thankfully, the smart people won the case and she didn’t get her ridiculous fireworks. You really vote for the great ones!

Items that were not mentioned about living in southeast Iowa. In the spring time mud is not your friend, county roads are rock roads with lots of sinking mud in areas that have not been rocked. In the summer the humidity is unbearable, it’ll be 110° degrees with 110% humidity, most certainly inhabitable unless you have air conditioning. Hogs … buyer beware if there’s a hog barn near the property. The stench is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. I lived in Iowa for 11 years and hands-down fall is the only time of the year to be happy that you live in Iowa! The best thing about Iowa is the sweetcorn there’s nothing better😉. And we don't really get snow, instead we have ICE STORMS, Yes...ICE that coats and destroys everything, and good luck driving in it, your gonna need real studded tires.
Landscape is nice here, we have everything, flat, hilly, rocky, and mountains...some of the best mountain driving is out here...make sure you have high performance brakes...don't be those people we hear about on the local news that took a swim with their car.
I live in a small town, like I said, mostly nice, BUT EXPENSIVE, the yuppies discovered us and is fast tracking the ruination of the small town..aka gentrification, doesn't just happen in metropolises..
Politics here is either Conservative or Libertarian leaning accept for the large city's, they are why the state is blue on a political map...Sorry, we tried...Sports is also a big thing here, though not for me personally, and University's we have em too...

I lived in central Iowa for over 9 years, moving from NY. The biggest difference is culture. It's more than just nice, but different too. Having moved around a bit, I've learned that the US isn't culturally monolithic. Community is much more central there, whether religion, sports, politics or whatever. Also, it's not as diverse as some other places. If you come from a highly populated metro where people keep to themselves, mind their own business and the attitude is a little gruff, there will be an adjustment period. There are things I miss for sure. We moved to AZ, which is different than Iowa or NY. I hate the summers, but it is what it is.

I am now missing it being too hot in July . 2023 feels like it went from May-September already. What happened to summer? I hope it warms up soon.

This summer has been quite mild that is for sure! Although I personally love it that way. Do you prefer the hot weather?

BONUSES…TAXES… no tax on social security or retirement…half the taxes we paid in Rochester for 10 acres on the turkey river…great new friends and neighbors…fabulous grocery stores and private meat and dairy who sell…the air is sooooo clean. Best bonus…my hubs is an astronomer and built his own observatory…sky here is considered top ten for darkness in u.s…wow…just wow…love your channel…💓

That is really awesome! It is super dark up there and I love it. I have a friend that lives in Preston MN which isn't too terribly far from Decorah. I love to visit him because of the stars. Thank you for watching!

I was working in Chicago for a couple of weeks one time and a guy told me he was scared of Iowa because it’s SO DARK driving at night. His brother attended ISU and he was afraid to leave Chicago to visit Ames! 😆 Then I realized it is never dark in Chicago, always seems to be some dim street lights burning. 🌽 We’re not everybody’s cup of tea and I’m okay with that. 🚜 ❤
