I hope we all know that it doesn't matter who is in the 'top job' because this is a systemic problem -- greed. We have allowed many of our economic sectors, to take advantage of the American people. It's disgusting and frightening for the future of our country. My husband and I will be retiring in the next two years n another country. We are absolutely worried that SS! will no longer be funded. we'll have to rely on his pension, a 403 (b) and a very prolific Investment account with Stephanie Janis Stiefel my FA. Our national debt is bloating and expanding every month. Our government needs to get spending under control and cut the federal budget.

Would make the most sense for a CANZUK alliance to focus all military spending on Navy, since we're all islands (functionally Canada is too, since its only border is friendly / not worth defending if the US ever tried to invade anyway.

The current world order may benefit some abstract notion of American power; and no doubt benefits a small number of extremely wealthy Americans, but it has been a disaster for the US middle and working classes. And those people you should remember are Trump's base. When Trump talks about making America great again he means making it a great place to live again for THOSE people; the ones whose interests and future was sacrificed to bring about the current world order. So by all means carry on with your abstract geopolitical theorising, but be careful when you talk about 'American interests' - because there is more than one America. Indeed much recent history can best be understood as two very different Americas with different interests fighting for control of the global agenda.

Offering Canada the opportunity to become one or more states is hardly an insult. I think it is a bad idea for the USA or Canada, but it isn't an insult. The real question isn't will Canada become part of America, but more which provinces will stay Canada?

The idea of the USA placing tariffs on Denmark is funny because on one hand Denmark's imports from the US make up like 5% and are easily replaced while the US imports stuff like medicine (Ozympic), important military hardware (For F16, F35 and satellites) and services like sea transport (Maersk). Of course the EU would get involved too.

As a Brexiteer (voted remain but I've converted) I have absolutely zero interest in 'joining' America. I've got zero interest in 'joining' the EU. We should be our own sovereign country and forge our own destiny. And where trade might be problematic? Run our economy fully capitalist but, where we fall short, go full socialist (create the factories to produce traded products, payed for by tax payers, nationalisation), and let British businessmen buy it out once it's up and running - with caveats. We are not going to effect world politics. But we can still effect ourselves. Let us use all these political theories, and pick and choose, Liberalism included, to forge our best way ahead. And in that idea - ALL foreign forces, ALL are rejected. We are a sovereign country. Let's act like it.

China is not justified in going after Taiwan, just as Serbia would not be justified in going after Croatia. China's claim on Taiwan needs to be questioned more robustly. That conflict would not benefit anyone. The insistence of the claim reeks of lazy, old-fashioned nationalist populism/populist nationalism to prop up the current government or the entrenched regime. Very much in the way that Argentinian governments have used the Malvinas/Falkland Islands over the years to garner nationalist/populist support when needed. It doesn't benefit anyone, but it gets people, already brainwashed to the idea, riled up in favor of the government.

Was really great listening to Gideon Rachman. Would be interested to see whether all the people criticising him could actually elaborate on why. As someone who has studied the financial history of U.S-UK relations, i'd agree that it's incredibly transactional. I have yet to find anything sentimental about it. That's not to say that shared heritage, values and dare i say ethnicity don't play a part. I suspect they do to a small bit. But i believe interests come first.

Knighthood. Lord Sir Donald Knight Garter of Balmedie has a good ring to it. Together with a seat in House of Lords

Amazing - even at the Spectator, where one expects sanity and reason, it’s talk about Trump’s rhetoric vs Trump’s track record. Not interesting, frankly. For example, we all know he is not going to violate Denmark’s right to Greenland. Can you honestly say he will? At the same time, he is raising the issue of American security - that is reasonable. Same with Panama, Mexico etc. As for the outrageous rhetoric, it seems the fashion these days. Need only to listen to the officials in LA right now. Your associate editor said it well: “Would the grown-ups please stand up?”
And thank you, FT, for our (Canadian) now former Finance Minister - she was employed by you for quite a long time and, since her only other qualifications for the job were her knowledge of Russian and Ukrainian literature, one must assume she’s learned all her financial wisdom at your newspaper.
