There is a difference between a hurt person hurting someone and an evil person hurting someone. Iniquity is real and people choose it.

That’s true… but that’s not really the point… To me, this about how we hurt the ones we love, often without meaning to.
This song resonates with me because I have hurt and have been hurt by the people I care about most. My father was hurt by his father, and that in turn hurt me. My mother was also hurt by her father, but he was hurt by his mother. It becomes a cycle before we realize it. My siblings and I have hurt each other, but we have also each been hurt by factors beyond our control. Factors that weren’t any one one person’s fault. Our attempts to protect ourselves often inflicts more damage instead (this is true of all people, not just my family).
And the pain and the hurt that gets passed on isn’t just emotional. It’s physical too, and the damage is real and lasting. I was born with so many health problems-some are hereditary and others are birth defects, but much of that damage that was done to my body before I was even born, was inflicted by one generation to the next. Physical and emotional trauma can affect the reproductive organs, especially in women. Perhaps that’s why I was born with a body that CAN’T bear children. The damage that’s accumulated over countless generations has ultimately left me barren, but I can’t pin the blame on any one person. Whether I like it or not, if a single person in my family tree was changed, I wouldn’t be “me.” So I can either be mad at the world and curse all of my ancestors, all the way back to Adam and Eve… OR I can choose to fix my eyes on the King, who can heal all things. After all, the Bible says that God IS love.
“[God] is patient, [God] is kind. [He] does not envy, [He] does not boast, [He] is not proud. [He] does not dishonor others, [He] is not self-seeking, [He] is not easily angered, [He] keeps no record of wrongs. [God] does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [He] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. [God] never fails.”
      ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13‬:‭4‬-‭7‬, 8a

Also, generally speaking, “evil” people have all been hurt too. “ALL have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God.” (Emphasis added). Everyone is evil without Jesus.
But look into an “evil” person’s past, and you’ll find pain. Even Hitler had it. He was abused by his Jewish stepfather. Does that make all the things that he did to millions of others “okay”? Of course not! But another part of this song is acknowledging our own part in the matter. Of taking responsibility and owning up to the things we’ve done. We can’t control how we’ve been hurt, but we CAN control how we respond to it. Our own actions. If Hitler is the example of how insanely bad things can get when we use our pain as an excuse, then JESUS is the example of how we can choose to respond differently. We hurt Him immeasurably, and He STILL forgave us!
“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
That’s what He said as He was DYING on the CROSS, AFTER being tortured, beaten, and made fun of!
We choose. We ALL choose. Do we use our pain as an excuse? Or do we accept that we alone are responsible for how we treat others?
“I’m sorry for the way I’ve been. I’m sorry for the things I said and did. Forgive me.” This part of the song is about taking responsibility for our own actions. It’s about owning up and admitting that we have wronged others. Sometimes, the abuse is one-sided, like when we hurt someone we don’t even know or when they hurt us. But more often, it’s a two-way street, and you can’t say, “I forgive you” without saying “I’m sorry” first. If you do, it’s like saying that everything you’ve done to hurt the other person was their fault and not your choice.
There are times when I’m triggered, and I lash out on instinct. Thought doesn’t enter into the equation. But I can still choose to say, “I’m sorry.” Afterward.
I’ll never forget that there was a moment in my childhood when I lashed out at my mother… and then five minutes later was sobbing and apologizing to her because I knew that I had hurt her, and I hated it. But the grace that she extended to me when she forgave me, right then and there, brought such healing to my heart. It was like a balm to my soul. It allowed me to forgive myself.
