This is the most under-rated “Church Sound Engineering” UA-cam channel. This is great stuff from pro’s. A lot of people like keeping these sorta conversations a secret. Thanks MXU

Nothing is better than having stereo well-mixed in ears. People spend way too much money thinking that having molded IEMs and expensive wireless packs will make the sound better. The best IEM mixes I've ever had are through a $50 wired Behringer P1, and have absolutely zero issues with $50 KZ in-ears. Good STEREO mix + ambient microphones, stereo guitars/keys/drums, and reverbs = more energy and passion when you're playing. People seem to miss that when everything sounds fantastic, it's exciting and envelopes you in the music and what you're doing. When things sound bad, it's hard to have energy, you're focused on always trying to hear what you need to, etc.

Behringer p1 does have stereo? How many aux do you need in your pa?

@@Jeff4014 look at small rack mixers like the Allen heath qu sb. It has 2 main outs , 2 matrix outs, and on top of that 10 monitor outs, per default 3 stereo and 4 mono‘s. Idk but with that little mixer you can make inspiring IEM for a 5 piece band or even more if let’s say the background vocalists share their stereo mix…😂
But I wohnt ever play with iem unless I absolutely have to hahah

Oh yeah. Guitar in modern P&W music has absolutely gone stereo. The effect of two hard panned amps with stereo delays and verbs is heavenly. But still I actually had an engineer at church argue once that “guitars just can’t be stereo, there’s no point” lol.🙄

I am a piano player and I want to heard myself in stereo, so to do so, I have 6 outputs from my Audio interface. 2 go to the main console, and another 2 go to my personal mixer (Mackie 402VLZ4) which also gets a mono monitor mix from the main console. That way, I get my stereo, and the Engineer is happy too.

This can be done with Roland Hs5 or the Jamhub (no more produce). All these device are made for silent band practice.

As someone who typically uses stereo ears, you get to a point where it almost doesn't matter whether you're in mono or stereo. Both are good, stereo is marginally better, but for simplicity and economy, mono is really useful.

A lot of times an issue with a mono setup is when stereo channels (like piano, overhead mics on drums, and guitars) are not properly summed on the mixer and it all sounds weird, stereo effects get canceled out and appear to be less present.
And a lot of people won't care until they try something that's better or is the right way to do things. So, I don't like that the main argument in the video is that people mostly don't care.

The best way to run stereo wireless ears is to run from the output of personal monitors to the inputs of the transmitter, let the band mix themselves with all the benefits of wireless. Win-win!!

I like my mix like the rest of my life, stereo.
If I’m practicing with a band without IEM I like to hear where the drums are, where the keys are etc. if they were all on top of each other it would be a lot less intelligible.

Totally blown away by how these “experts” so broadly devalued having a stereo in ear mix. If you’ve played with a stereo in ear mix you CANNOT go back to playing mono and not feel severely cheated. Don’t waste your money on good IEMs folks if you’re gonna have a mono mix. It’s a complete waste.

  • @ewadge

A mono mix will get you through the gig. A stereo mix means you might enjoy playing it. I cannot stand mono mixes. Most mix engineers have never had to do a gig with a mono mix and cannot appreciate the difference to the musician. I would prefer sharing a stereo mix with another musician than getting a mono mix.
The argument that guitars are mono is completely besides the point. As a bass player, being able to pan a guitar a bit to the right or left and pan overheads makes mixing my in ears so much easier and my mix so much more enjoyable.
Mono is not bad, its pure blasphemey.

  • @HarmonicDrone

Yes, a snare isn't stereo, but the spatial arrangement makes an insane difference. It allows more audio information to make it to your ears because you are sharing the competing frequencies across both L and R. Stereo all the way!

This is not a discussion of stereo vs. mono IEM mixes, but an attempt to convert others to their technical beliefs. Maybe just stick with imposing your morality onto others.
