    This could've been a way better interview if DJ self would just be quiet and let an interview progress. You literally interrupted Rack each time before he got to the point he was making🙄 kinda annoying. But shout out to Brooklyn. Definitely in my Polo bag 20 years after high school, cuz i wasn't tryna get jacked going from Flatbush to the Stuy! Lol 😂

    I'm going off here but I love Polo, one thing that I really love about Polo is when they retro a lot stuff, it's not identical to the OGs. Like the new Suicide skier is different then the older one. Some items are identical like the Snow Beach, but it was awesome that they dropped the black series Snow Beach. Not like Nike when their retroes are pretty much identical

    Disco is telling no lies, wearing a whole bunch of Lo back in the late 80’s/90’s will get you hurt. The Polo Cookie with the ski man on the back was called the “suicide” jacket for a reason. I’ve seen many a person get robbed on Utica Ave for their Lo. Lo Lifes is also not a gang, it’s a brotherhood.

    • @sabot4ge
      @sabot4ge 4 місяці тому +1

      @@infiniteXpower well that Polo style wasn't for hip-hop culture. it was expensive. Polo made clothes for actual sports, like for going to ski, going to swim, etc. so people who were wealthy would wear the Polo rugby line because they actually were playing rugby....Polo had different collections that were meant for different things. Polo Sport was really for high-end sports, but it was expensive gear. $500 for a vest, $600 for a jacket, $350 for a pair of goggles, but the target audience were wealthy people who actually used this gear for its actual purpose; sports. What made them stand-out is they promoted Polo to the inner-city kids who never had the knowledge/means to even look at these Polo pieces in person. One outfit they wore may have cost $1,000 and this was in 1985. Also, they were teenagers doing this. Plus, they sold Polo as well to kids who lived in the projects for affordable prices. But New York has an area called the garment district, so they actually manufacture Polo in that industrial area. Therefore, New York City had access to Polo that wasn't sold in other states. Most states may have 1 actual Ralph Lauren outlet or a department store that sells basic Polo shirts with just the horse on it. Plus the Polo that they are wearing comes from older collections; the 80's collections. These guys are basically representing the 1980's street culture where you could literally buy clothes for affordable prices that would retail for super expensive prices. A lot of kids in the projects who were poor received their first Polo shirts/jackets from these guys. But they don't promote crime. Their main message is to educate the youth on how to turn a negative into a positive because they're all productive citizens now.
      Dapper Dan is similar. Gucci actually puts him in their commercials now and created his own personal line of Gucci clothing. He would illegally obtain the fabrics that Gucci/Versace/Fendi and all the high-end European designer brands owned via copyright, and then customize those fabrics into his own shirts, jackets, and outfits. He manufactured his own clothes but used their fabrics to do it. He was arrested for it, his store was shut down, and he was sued. It ruined his career in fashion but he continued to operate via the underground. He helped to promote these brands to inner-city people who came from the hood because in the 80's, European fashion brands were targeting wealthy clientele, not people from the hood. Nowadays, those same European brands exclusively make clothes/sneakers that are marketed towards the Hip-Hop culture. They make their sneakers look appealing to Hip-Hop culture people, but in the 80's, they marketed their shoes to wealthy clientele.
      So the big picture is, Hip-Hop culture is very influential when it comes to the arts, fashion, and trends. These companies who never focused on Hip-Hop culture or the inner-city learned that they could actually create products that would be appealing to these people, and nowadays, because of groups like the Lo Lives and people like Dapper Dan, they now make products for everybody instead of a small percentage of wealthy people who like to go yachting. Even though its technically a criminal element, the success and marketing of these brands within Hip-Hop culture or inner-city culture was achieved. Hip-Hop is influential all over the globe, and kids/young people who follow Hip-Hop are very trendy. So at 50 years old, Hip-Hop is being recognized for its impact on not just music, but American culture in general. No other form of music really had a huge cultural impact at 25 years old like Hip-Hop. Even Rock music was considered subversive in the 70's after being around for 30 years. Rock wasn't really recognized for its impact on fashion/etc until the 80's.
      The 1980's were a pivotal time for black America/hip-hop culture. That's when Hip-Hop culture became prevalent. For good or worse, black people didn't dress Hip-Hop until it became popular in the 80's. RUN DMC promoted Adidas...Fila suits...Polo..all of these brands were the first popular brands that Hip-Hop culture embraced..and then when the 90's kicked in, a few black clothing lines popped up. But it's just a history in Hip-Hop, which is a way of life now instead of just music. I personally think promoting consumerism instead of ownership is a bad thing..and I think Hip-Hop overshadows a lot of our creativity/culture in general as a people, but who's promoting it? The record labels and distributors of Hip-Hop have always been white corporations. There's never been a distributor of black music period in history except Motown. So yeah..Hip-Hop exists and unfortunately takes up a lot of our culture's oxygen, but the white people made it that way because they keep promoting it over other forms of our culture/music.
      But Hip-Hop takes other people's culture and makes it its own. So that's why this Polo story is important. Hip-Hop started off taking samples from 70's funk and soul records, and a rapper rapping over it. So Hip-Hop takes things from other cultures, and makes it its own. Unfortunately, like I said, instead of various sub-genres of black culture receiving equal promotion, Hip-Hop has been ordained the primary culture of black people by record executives who for whatever reason choose to keep making it so influential in our lives.

      they used to boost when they were teenagers. they don't want to talk about boosting, but that's all they ever get asked about. they came from a poverty-stricken atmosphere that was filled with violence. boosting was something that every race did in NYC. its the biggest city in America and they have the industries that manufacture all the famous clothing brands, so trucks roll around all day long with millions of dollars worth of merchandise. plus, their docks are constantly taking off merchandise from ships that are sending in things from overseas. italian mafia, the irish, the jews, the blacks, every race in the world used to hijack trucks and boost. in a city of millions and millions of people that actually has the factories that produce brands that people love, of course there's going to be huge underground black market, especially in the 80s when NYC was still the capital of crime.
