At the University of California, Irvine, we’re counting on it. UCI chemistry student Mya Le Thai has developed a technology that could potentially help a battery hold unlimited charges. While experimenting in the lab, she made a remarkable discovery that will have a huge impact on future energy consumption.
By coating the gold nanowires in a thin gel, the filaments of the capacitor retain their properties under hundreds of thousands of charges. Call it a hunch. Call it a happy accident. We call it the Power of I.

_Gold nanowires!_ You want to store energy using gold nanowires. I think there's just a tiny reason why this will never be viable in practice.
You know why we went to lithium batteries? Because most lithium atoms weigh about 7 AMU, whereas naturally-occurring gold atoms weigh 197 AMU. _28 Times more._
And second, _it's made of GOLD. You can't seriously be planning on using gold metal as a significant component of your battery._

It does not say unlimited energy. It says that is has unlimited cycle lifetime. So lets say you would buy a Tesla with such battery the battery will last forever and does not need to be replaced. Offcoarse u need to charge it like any other battery. You just misunderstood. Anyway i guess its not coming to the market as its a battery build on GOLD nanowires. First thing Gold is rare. Next thing making nanowires from any material is hard for mass production. So its all just a nice fundamental invention but we wont see any battery like this in the market. But the derived knowledge can be used for creating new ideas on the cheaper batteries.
If you want your university to have any sense of credibility you need to remove this video.

Hold unlimited charges? Like in, being able to be loaded and unloaded anytime, or really just holding a big charge, so it can run a system forever?
It can be recharged forever without losing much power like the batteries you use in your phone or laptop for example. An average laptop battery can take 300-500 charge cycles and the UCI nanobattery endured about 200.000 charges. It's not like it can be charged once and then you have unlimited power. :)
Unbeliefable nevertheless. :-) Imagine those batteries in electric cars, used as energystorage for buildings in combination with renewable energy or the long term use of material because you dont´t have to replace those systems every couple of years. I really hope this discovery has the potential to become part of a more sustainable future.
