It’s great to have a voice and representation of Galveston’s black community. Bernard is going to do great work.

Great interview! It's my belief that a community must appreciate its own history and significance before it can expect the outside world to do so. This starts with education of the children of that community. In Klein ISD where I live, part of the 4th grade Texas History curriculum is to learn the history of the local Klein and surrounding areas. It also involves a day visit to the local historical museum (an interactive living history museum at that!). If Galveston ISD and the private schools in Galveston are not doing this type of thing now, they should. This education creates a pride in one's community, and an urge to tell others about their community and how important it was and still is. I know looking from the outside in that a majority of Texans still think of Galveston as a beach community with brown water where a hurricane a long time ago washed it off the map and nothing else ever happened (of course we know that's not true).
