Thanks a lots bro, a million likes. I went to some hoopties stereo shop, they told me something about creating a module for my GPS to make it work with my dub din pioneer dvd player. They wanted $700, I'm sure they were trying to rip me off. I used an 82 Ohm resistor because I couldn't find 70 either, and I wasn't sure if 100 would be optimal. So I thought 82 is closer than 100. In any case, It's very great you're making these videos to help people like me out. A lot of the people on UA-cam are making videos advertising their abilities and asking people to send the electronics in for repairs and modifications for money. It's very admirable that you're making this video, you make UA-cam more valuable.
@@ryanwalker6579 yeah 82 ohms works perfectly on my 2006 Highlander Hybrid. I imagine between 70 and 100 is what the information monitor looks for. I think more resistance may give you problems if you're 12 volt system is low on power like if you are listening to the radio with the engine off battery gets low, the GPS might start blinking on and off or something. I haven't had any issues thus far, mine is a hybrid Highlander I don't listen to the radio with my car off very often, and the accessory battery doesn't need too much capacity in a hybrid vehicle. I've seen hybrid vehicles with a 12 volt accessory battery as low as 400 cold cranking amps. I actually upgraded mine to 700 cca, a bigger accessory battery can't hurt as long as it fits.
How did you know you needed to bridge that plug with a 70ohm resistor? That's the first I've heard of that requirement so I'm glad I came across your video. Thanks for taking the time to document this to help others.
I came across the need to use the 70ohm resistor on a forum about this installation. I didn't actually test it without the resistor, so I don't know for sure if it's needed, but I assumed it was.
Thanks for the video! About to take on this installation myself. With the Hybrid system, I had heard you do not want to exceed a 30 A draw. Does this hold up for our Highlanders? Looking at an amplifier with a 30 A draw and a subwoofer with a built in amp with a 15 A draw.
Hey @Ryanwalker6579 I've got a Gen2 Highlander Limited Highlander w/JBL Audio and Navigation. Do you know if a resister is needed for this as well? Every shop is telling me I'm out of luck as soon as I say it has Navigation, Including a really helpful Crutchfield support rep. I've been looking at the Kenwood HU's or even the Enon, Joying, and Atoto S8
Hey @GaryWold I'm not an expert, so this isn't professional advice, but your car sounds exactly like mine....Limited Highlander w/JBL Audio and Navigation, and it worked for me. What year is yours? I'm guessing you'll need the resistor for your navigation system, but it should work.
@@GaryWold I don't know what the 2010 looks like, but if you watch the video, I only removed the stock stereo and replaced it with the double-din stereo. The hybrid system / navigation system display is still in the car.
Question. So 100 only work for you, so does that mean anything from 70 to 100 homes will work? Do you think 100 is it a sure shot and I should just use that? Because I found 82 and a 75
This is a lifesaver. Been wanting to do this for years but never had good info on how to do so, or even if it was possible. Do you need to bypass the JBL amp if you are not sending the audio to a separate amp?
Good question. I think you'll still need to bypass the factory JBL amp because the stereo harness (Metra 70-8113) is only used to power the new stereo and no longer sends the signal/music/sound to the factory amp, so the music/sound will no longer get sent out to the speakers. You'll need to connect factory amp bypass harness (Metra 70-8116) to the speaker wires in the back of the new stereo, and then run it all the way back to the connector that you unplug from the factory JBL amp. In other words, the factory amp bypass harness connects the speaker wires on the new stereo to the speakers in the car. The speakers will be powered by the new stereo instead of the factory JBL amp. Hope that makes sense.
I've been looking for a video like this for so long! Thank you Ryan. I'm going to follow your video to do the same soon. My one big question is hardly even related to this content, but when your selecting things on you navigation screen it doesn't make a beeping sound. I've tried my hardest but I cant figure out how to mute button presses! Its been like this since I've bought the car and its driving me crazy since its always at top volume lol. Do you have any advice to do so?
I see what you are saying. You are right. But I did use the 70-8116 and it worked. It was so long ago, I don't remember why I got that one, but like I said, it worked. I would recommend getting both and returning the one that doesn't work. :)
Maybe you know the answer to this. I assume that you are not using the Navigation screen balance controls: forward/ rear right/left treble/mid/bass with your amplifier bypass. Is that correct? If I wanted to keep the factory speaker system w/ JBL amp, are there enough RCA ports to feed all the factory speakers and keep the Navigation screen controls? I believe there are 6 speakers from factory. Does that new head unit have 3 channels? or is the factory using only 2 channels?
That’s correct. Once you replace the factory stereo with a new head unit, your balance controls will be done on the new head unit. Watch minute 18:00 to the end of the video. You can use the factory amp, but you’ll need the long harness that runs from the head unit back to the factory amp. I ran it from the after market amp instead and bypassed the factory amp, but you don’t need to do that. There are 8 wires on the harness, 2 for each speaker. So the factory amp actually is a 4-channel amp. Hope that helps!
Does anyone know why the intermittent lights came on randomly after turning off headlights, opening doors, locking the vehicle with key fob and when is just parked and not using it at all?
I just installed a new stereo and now the climate control button is not responding saying “check AC connection”. We made sure the ac plug is good but still nothing. Any tips?
I just does did some quick research on your issue, and it sounds like you may have blown a fuse or relay. Start with the AC fuse in the fuse box. Good luck!
hey man I have the same radio and everything but my axxess box isnt turning on which wires did you hook the red power and black power up too from the metra 70-8114 ? the radio comes on but my steering wheel controls arent doing anything. i think i might not be hooking them up to the right ones.
The red wire on the Metra 70-8114 connects to the red (accessories) wire on the stereo harness, and the black wire connects to the black (ground) wire on the stereo harness. Hope that helps.
@Ryan Walker hello Mr.Ryan I have same this car in video and I'm in San Francisco, can I installation car stereo by myself or Must be go to Car stereo shop for installation, and how long time you take for installation with rear camera and everything
Hi Max. This is a pretty big job and I wouldn’t recommend doing it yourself unless you have some experience with stereo installations and/or have a good idea what your doing. It does take a while and is a lot of work. But if you want to save some money and want a project and a good challenge, go for it.
