    This is a great video and exactly why I will stick with my Brompton! Moulton is a cool looking bike, but there’s no way i would want to go through this every time I travel. LOVE your content!

    Thanks (from France) for this very interesting video - the best one - when looking if Brompton is the answer for travel project with a bike !

    Looks like quite a bit of work involved in the packing and unpacking process. I have a TSR 22 and will tour with it next year.

    What size Samsonite case did you use to pack up the Moulton? Thanks much. I've got a nearly new Cone and am looking forward to some fine travels.

    Hi! Could you be so kind as to share your inner dimension of the suitcase? I just got a TSR and will pick it up abroad. Thanks!

    In addition to a Brompton comparison, a Bike Friday NWT comparison would be great. I take Brompton on short trips but NWT is def better for week plus trips and packs a lot easier than the Moulton it seems

    I am looking forward to seeing how it goes. I devoured your Brompton e-book and followed all the videos to the coast and around NZ. Just a couple of questions, what are the case dimensions and how much does it all weigh? Thanks and have a great trip! 🚲✈

      @PathLessPedaledTV 7 років тому +5

      Dimensions are 30x12x20. Here's a link the case: amzn.to/2nEfbjv On our scaled it comes in around 14lbs. With the bike + case, our scales showed 40lbs. So about 10lbs beneath the limit. I put some tools and pedals in there so total weight is about 43-45lbs with 5lbs to spare.

    Personal bucketlist: go to Japan, buy a used moulton from cycle paradise. Ride around tokyo and then take it home in a suitcase.

    Wow, way more packing work than a Brompton but I am guessing that they will ride much like a regular road bike or a Bike Friday which also seems easier to pack.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV 7 років тому +2

      Ethan Frankel yes. More work than the brommie and bike Friday, but less than a standard SS coupled bike. Worth it because the ride is so smooth!

    Hi, thanks for your sharing. Apparently, the size of Samsonite F'lite 31 is H32.7 x W23.5 x D13.8. If these are actual dimension or it is a size bigger?
    Do you think AM7 can fit into your suitcase in video?
    Thanks

    Can you cover the two halves with a lightweight travel cover and take them on as carry-on luggage, minus all the foam tube covers?

    How long does it take to assemble/ disassemble? I have a Dahon that fits in my airline crew bag that A)does not fit the Brompton (two of which we own) and B) does not fit into the "new and improved" crew bag, which is coming. Replacement means upgrade.

      The actual breaking apart is pretty quick. It's the putting it nicely in the case that takes up time. I would say to break apart would be about 10 minutes if that.

    Hi, very excited for this series, which model of Moulton is this?

  • @jonowee
    @jonowee 7 років тому

    Is there a reason why Moulton chose 7mm hex for that one bolt when that head is large enough for a more available 8mm? And also putting the screw head on the drive side of the bike, why?

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV 7 років тому

      +jonowee not sure exactly, but my guess would be so that you dont fiddle with it by accident. It is something that u just occasionally check for tightness.

    Seems like a lot of work and quite a complicated process to disassemble and pack bike for travel. With the number of tools you also need to have with you for assembly and disassembly seems the only advantage to travelling with a Moulton over full size bike is to avoid fee for checking bike on plane. I'd love to know how the bike rides because traveling with a brompton is way easier.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV 7 років тому +1

      The actual disassembly is pretty easy and almost all the tools I needed were on a single multitool, save for the 7mm hex. The bike check fees add up, esp if you travel alot. Some airlines charge upwards of $200 for a single bike in one direction. So as a couple, that would be $400 one way and $800 roundtrip! Shipping is marginally better . Vid comparing the ride between a Moulton and Brompton is definitely in the que.

      Hey Todd, now that I have a Moulton I am going to take it soon for my first test flight. Its a bit of lengthy process packing it. But it rides extremely well! Very comfortable bike

  • @bill4836

    Nice video. A "birdcage" brake cable separator would let you separate the handlebars entirely from the front assembly. This bike has one: cdn.mos.bikeradar.imdserve.com/images/legacy/bikeradar/categories/cycling/bike/road/images/moultointwinpylon-1200-80.jpg
    The picture is high enough rez you can zoom in to see it. When the cable splitter is unscrewed the top of the "cage" unplugs from the base, separating the cable housing.
    Good idea using the pipe wrap. You can't trust the TSA to put the blanket back the way they found it. If you don't want to use a blanket, S&S sells a net you can wrap the bike in. The TSA can see what's inside without rearranging everything.
    That 7mm wrench is bizarre. Did you check it fits? Other Moulton spaceframes use a 6 mm allen key or a regular hex wrench. At any rate, you only need to check that the bolt is dead tight once or twice a year. You don't need to travel with it.

      Not even comparable. The Moulton is not foldable, but is infinitely a better bike & a better all-rounder than the Brompton.
