Ugh I just discovered... you and your channel.. I BARELY sew.. But I am addicted... to this channel.. your humor and charm.. are really making my day.. a million times better. TYSM FOR THAT. 🥲🥰😍
I don't know how others sew in zippers, but I generally sew the seam closed - using the longest stitch possible for the area where the zipper will be, reverse stitching at the base and resuming a normal stitch length for the remaining seam. I iron it open, place the zipper face down on the space, run a stitch (using a zipper foot if available) down each side. Then I use a seam ripper to pull/cut out the long stitches and the zipper is complete - I got to where I could do all this in 5-10 minutes, and continue on. Perhaps this is a method unique to me, but it always worked fine and I've never understood why zippers are put in any other way. Of course, now I make patterns that don't require zippers, as I'm over them completely.
That's how I do zippers also. This is the method I was taught in Home Ec. and 4-H and I never questioned it. Good grief, WHO would openly question a Home Ec. teacher back in 1969? Besides, she was also my P.E. teacher and had the ability to make my life a living hell! LOL
Thanks for the explanation of how to do zippers. I tried to make a skirt to wear to a job interview, but I didn’t know how to do buttonholes. My only alternative then was snaps. It turned out well….. until I sat down in front of the interview panel. I heard a sound like corn popping as they all came open and my skirt fell off. I didn’t get the job.
Your videos are very relatable. I don't even want to think about how many unfinished projects I have. They weren't finished by the intended deadline, so they simply weren't finished.
I'm a swim teacher and made myself 1 of these this summer so I could come home to shower. I may have ignored the zipper bit and just made it bigger so I could get it done. Good job!
This fabric smacked me with a big dose of nostalgia! My parents had the matching comforter on their bed for what seems like forever! They may even still have it!! I'd love to be able to get my hands on some sheets myself!
Thank you for making me feel better knowing that I am not the only one whom chaos follows all through sewing a project. Also putting things down and forgetting that I was working on them is my specialty
I howled when you pinned it to the ironing board.... I see people hand-stitching on their tailor hams and I can't even avoid hand-sewing my nondominant index finger into my work at least once most days if I'm using it to keep my stitches small... I recently made a one-size pattern hooded robe with capelet for a friend and my friend is rather generously plus-sized, so even though he'd had this pattern made for him before about fifteen years ago, mine was a little tight in the armpits/across the chest, so I used my favourite "oh QUACK! My fabric is like an inch too narrow!" cheat - I unpicked my lovely hand-stitched French Seams and installed some 4 or 5 inch armpit gussets. BEST CHEAT EVER, fits him beautifully.
I thought the same thing.....until...I had flashbacks of how many times my rhinestone earrings have gotten caught on my caftan. As a Bellydancer, we are required by the culture we represent to wear a cover up (caftan)when not on stage or actively performing. The zipper is brilliant for not smudging makeup, messing up hair, or ripping out earrings back stage! Now I need to make one...with a zipper!
Caftans with zippers are great for getting ready too. Put outfit on, put caftan over outfit, do hair and makeup with no worries about fallout on outfit or crushing hair/ ruining makeup. So handy.
@@StephanieCanada I could, but once a project is done my brain literally goes “this is how it is and shall never see my machine or needles again”. Like poof. No longer available for alterations. It’s a problem!

I’ve only recently started collecting vintage patterns. Haven’t been brave enough to try to make one, yet. Your videos are boosting my confidence to try one, though.
Huzzah! I have missed your videos and your quirky sense of humor. I used to rock the caftan as a teenager. My mom just folded a couple yards of cotton knit material in half, sewed down the two sides stooping short enough to leave room for the arm holes and cut a slit for the for the head to poke through. Down and dirty caftans perfect to sleep in and lounge around the house during sweltering summers with no air-conditioning.
I actually inherited this pattern from my mom, along with many others (her entire stash!). I’ve tried using some of the patterns, but sizing is soooo different that I’ve gotten rid of most of them, but I did keep this and was actually thinking of trying. I feel more confident now that it will fit!!
