Great vid Alistair. I just hope the farmers don’t suffer like the fishermen have with stats being bandied around that never had to be proved. Fishermen always had to prove themselves but the stats were never backed up. Like farmers, most kiwi fishermen didn’t want to destroy their own livelihood or planet. Didn’t matter how proactive they were, no one was ever satisfied.

The hills, the hills never fail to amaze me . . . I follow life of a bushman too and again it's the hills. The second thing that I like to inquire about are the tall hedges that surround the paddocks, quite amazing. In regard to the government policy . . . they are mad right now in every country. Cheers.

Good video again Alistair. Just rang my friend in Whangarei who has a dairy farm to talk about the methane tax and how it would effect everything. He was telling me there are 17 farmers ready to sell out in the North area. He also said there are no end of blocks going into trees so that it can offset the CO2 for foreign investors. Those blocks will probably never come back into Arable/ grassland farming.
    This is bloody madness.
I just had a couple of letters printed in the Farmers Weekly (uk) about climate change and about the disconnection between government policy and us lot who are trying to feed the world.
They seem determined to change the whole system when we have never had more hungry people to feed . It’s strange
Is that why you looking at blackcurrants?

    • @kiwifarmernz
      @kiwifarmernz  2 роки тому

We have been looking at alternative land use options for a while now, so blackcurrants was just one of them. With the average age of farmers here in their 50s no wonder they are wanting to cash up.

Keen on the methane/co2 tax. Particularly how it's not possible to pass on the overhead cost to the the buyer. Unlike UTE tax, where the consumer is taxed, this tax is solely on the farmer. We can't say ohh yeah, 3.50kg plus fart tax.. to works etc...

Yes would like your views. Here in Ireland we have to lower farm emissions by 25% by 2030.
To achieve that there is a big push for organic farming there's more support payments for organic now.
Also reducing the age of first calving to 2 years old.
Reducing age of slaugther of cattle.
    Incorporating more clover.
Slurry spreading will be all by LESS low emission slurry spreading by 2025.
Ammonia nitrate nitrogen looks like it's going to be banned all protected urea.
That's only a few there's a lot more the government haven't said it but the way to meet the 25% reduction would be a national cull it's why there's a push for organic lower stocking rate no chemical fertiliser national cull could be avoided there talking about opening markets for organic food people are getting hard to afford conventional foods it's all bullshit.
I would love to know how much carbon dioxide it takes to grow a tonne of DM of grass then we could get some honest info farming impact on global warming.

As a South African, I feel your pain. Each country seems to get crazier with every government coming to power.
In South Africa as yet, we do not have a law on climate change taxes but we have to deal with a new law: Expropriation Without Compensation (EWC) passed whereby your property e.g. farm, house, investments, bank accounts, pension fund can be confiscated by the government without receiving any compensation or fair compensation.
We also need to deal with another law called Broad Base Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) which completely corrupted any government dealings. It seems that you in NZ may head in the same direction as South Africa with the preference received from government by the Maori community.
Stay strong and fright this as if you don't, you will loose more than you know.
