Tagaytuy city checks a lot of boxes for me. Higher elevation means cooler weather and amazing views. Tons of great restaurants with the best food I've had in the Philippines. Just about any activity you can think of. Only 1.5 hours from Manila which makes travel in and out of the Philippines much easier.

1.) Dipolog-why? Access to ferries, airport, right on the ocean, beautiful boardwalk, great market and restaurants, friendly residents, decent hospital, good bus station, and the city us small and manageable. Only a few foreigners😊😊😊.
2.) Zamboanga-it gets a bad rap due to its location and the whole muslim thing. Right in the ocean, great nightlife and restaurants, good transportation hub if buses, ferries, and nice and small airport. Very safe and only a handful if foreigners.
3.) Siaragao-love the beach vibe, great restaurants, best waves to surf, and interesting group of expats which are much younger, healthier, and culturally diverse.

Also changing islands/regions is a huge deal for my GF as she is fluent in english, visaya & tagalog But would be unable to speak the local dialect :/ on say bohol.

Being that my Province girl is from Luzon, we have travelled to many different areas in the north. You mentioned Illocos Norte and I highly recommend travelling there. Pagudpud and Patapat Viaduct are absolutely beautiful without a lot of people and very little traffic. Even further north is Batanes (New Zealand of the Philippines). It looks stunning, but we haven't travelled there just yet.

Dipolog City is VERY NICE...! I went there on the way to Tubod, Lanao Del Norte and stayed in The West End Court Hotel off Chavez Street. That was back in December 25. I LOVED the Boulevard there and the food and people. It was about a 5 hour bus ride to Ozami from there and then a 20 minute ferry ride into Lanao from Ozamis. I heard all of the stories about Mindanao too and it was mainly from people who haven't even been there. I would definitely recommend going there! Mindanao is fabulous! I have been to Tagum City and Davao and they are great! You did a great video one the place too Gio. I am going to heck out that security bag on your website too! San Juan became a touristy area now because of the beaches(surfing) and night life. A fave go to place for local tourists too. The neighboring towns are still laid back and if you also want to get some colder air Baguio City is just a hour and a half ride away. There are also 2 big private hospitals nearby coz I know most older expats want to be near these facilities just in case.

We have advisories from our embassy not to travel to Mindanao, all Mindanao which is unfair, but in case of accidents also/ sickness they wouldn't cover us of any claims if it happened in Mindanao. I know Mindanao is pretty and would like to visit but for the safe side, better to remain where objectively safer.

We need a budget minded video based on this topic. If you on a low income like under 1500 then where would be the best place for you. If you were between 1500 and 2k then where would be a good place for you. My personal thought is that if you are retired and living with a pension under 1700 then you should probably stay in the states as the benefits are better for you. If your in the donut hole between 2k and 3k then you are better off in the philippines as your money will go farther.

Just remember, if you are American 65 or over and come to the Philippines, you will not have access to Medicare and possibly free meds. If you are a veteran, you may have access to meds. Medicare does not work outside the U.S. So you would need private health insurance or self-insure yourself up to maybe 700,000 pesos in event of a major medical problem. It is a cash society here. Most major hospitals will take credit cards, debit cards or cash. In my opinion, if you are in one of the major 3 cities (Manila, Cebu City, Davao), you might be able to get by at $3000 to $4000 a month depending on your life style and size of family. If you go to places like Dumaguete, Lyte, Iloilo, or Mindanao, you should be able to live well on $2,000 per month without bells and whistles. Rent at $222 (12,000p) to $296 (16,000p) a month for a decent place. Then you will have food, utilities, and internet. Electric is very high in the Philippines, water is cheap. I have a 4 bedroom house (w/wife + 2 daughters) with a 10,000p ($185) - 12,000p ($222) a month electric bill -- mostly for the air conditioning in 4 rooms. So for 1 A/C room, it would be much less, maybe 2500p ($46.00 a month). I don't each much, so for me only, my grocery bill would not be much, maybe 5000 to 10,000 a month ($100 - $200).

@Geoduck That’s what I did this month on PAL. I had my carry on backpack (7kg), and a computer bag that held a lot of stuff. But they don’t weigh the personal item (computer bag), so I had my smaller sling bag inside. Once I get to my seat, pull out the sling for under my seat, and the other 2 larger bags go overhead. My sling is a Pacsafe, and the quality is excellent.
